I'm responsible =/= I purposefully orchestrated them to attack you personally. I just saw it as acknowledgement of the coincidence that each of them were involved on opposite sides of conflicts throughout the past few years. Is it lazy? Eh, maybe? I'd say it's just cheesy Bond/spy writing that you'd expect. Definitely not the "laziest writing ever".

I didn't really like Spectre after I watched it in theatres because of the script and third act. I rewatched it last night, and I found myself enjoying it so much more, since I now know what to expect. I was glad to see them go back to the traditional formula to see Daniel Craig evolve into the Bond we know and love. I think it's a very good Bond film now, but still not great. That train fight is still one of best Bond fights EVER, though. Spectre gets better with more viewings. I have come to accept the film for what it is, and I had a blast watching it last night.

+The Film Effect Same exact thing here. First time I saw it is was like maybe 6/10 and felt like something was missing. The feeling doesn't entirely go away, but the second and especially the third time I came to terms with it I appreciated what it went for, which is something WAY different from the rest of Craig's movies. Still definitely like a high 7, entertaining but not great. If the third act was a little more exciting and not so predictable, and the script had a little more substance to it it could have been an exceptional Bond.

Same here. The first time I saw it, it was pretty disappointing (especially after seeing Skyfall for the first time), but just recently I rewatched the whole Craig-quadrilogy, and Spectre ended up the one I enjoyed the most. I really like how Bond seems rustier and more tired than in any of the earlier films, but he still has his charm and humour. Plus the cinematography is mind-blowingly beautiful.

Just got home from seeing Spectre. It started off with great action and camera work and introduced an intriguing mystery. But after the first act ended it started to drag and play by the numbers. Lots of predictable plot points and some contrivances. I also felt that the partnership between Bond and Swan was lacking in chemistry and just felt forced. Waltz was entirely wasted as the villain, too! His introduction was pretty intimidating but after that he was either absent or unthreatening. All in all, a pretty good beginning, a boring-as-hell middle and an anti-climactic ending. Nothing really surprises you. Although there was a pretty massive explosion that was pretty friggin awesome! Go watch Casino Royale again.

Bautista is a modern take on characters like Oddjob and Jaws. I'm fine with the return to formula in this film. Casino Royale to Skyfall was sort of Bond's origin story. Spectre is about Bond finally becoming Bond. Now that they got this out of the way they can really knock it out of the park with the next film if Craig decides to do one more and I hope he does.
@nathyngoss3132

To me, Craig's Bond became proper Bond at the end of Casino Royale, that's why he doesn't introduce himself as "Bond, James Bond" until the end of the film and we don't hear the James Bond theme until then either.

Metacritic is a more reliable source because it averages out critic scores. Rotten Tomatoes just averages out the number of positive reviews versus the number of negative reviews to get that percentage. I think 'Spectre' will have a final RT score around 75% just so it can get certified fresh. I'll be mad if it doesn't.

+CTmoviesnetwork As someone already mentioned the Tomatometer only gives the percentage of reviews that were "positive" (which is defined as 6/10 or over). That means that if everyone in the world thought a film was just better than average (i.e. a 6/10) it'd get a score of 100% and an average score of 6/10. So, a high tomatometer percentage doesn't necessarily mean critics preferred it. Currently I'm looking as Quantum at 65% and Spectre at 64%, however, Quantum has an average rating of 6.1/10 and Spectre has an average rating of 6.6/10. Sorry for waffling but I think the average rating is important!

What an amazing set up for some drama... and yet what did they do with it? Bond runs away in a hail of bullets and action. Compare to Eyes Wide Shut, where we stay in the room after he's been revealed and the drama intensifies. Or Where Eagles Dare, where they spend 20 minutes sat in a room after they've been revealed listening to Richard Burton, both these examples handled the drama by introducing claustrophobia and NOT releasing it, putting the audience right in it and holding it for as long as they dare. Oh yeah, it's called suspense, and it doesn't exist in movies anymore. In Spectre, they went to all the trouble to set up a fantastic dramatic scene and they chickend out at the EARLIEST moment and reduced to fisticuffs, running and gunfire. When he looked up at Bond on the balcony I thought at last we were going to get a movie with some DIALOGUE and some DRAMA. When he looked up and addressed Bond, I was expecting Bond to step forward and address him back, then be led down by some lackeys and have a one-to-one word dual with the baddy before they break off to come back to violence later. Such a cop out, such a lazy film. I think Sam Mendes was just concentrating on making sure the product placement was done right, and I think he probably concentrated on the 2nd unit to get all the action sequences right, and left the 1st unit to get some head and shoulders shots of Craig and get the actors' dialogue. It was a truly dreadful film, all 4 of the Craig Bonds are. You lot are too easily pleased.

I think you were spot on about the script but the reason the old formula has returned is because he's finally become James Bond. The three movies before led up to this return to classic James Bond. And it was good to see spectre back in the bond universe.

I thought Bond didn't care about his martini in Casino Royale because it's a remake of the very first Bond movie, so it shows the earlier years of Bond-before he became the kind of snobby Bond shown in the previous movies? Then it would make sense to show his development in the subsequent movies and at some point re-introduce the "shaken, not stirred" line.

He did not care about the martini because when he first ordered it everything was going well so he played a little with the order. Chris, you do realize, in Casino Royale, when Bond orders the drink, there was a reason he said he didn't give a damn if it was shaken or stirred. It wasn't to make the character different from before, it was because he just lost all of his money to Le Chiffre, Vesper refused to give him more money to keep going, and Bond was fucking pissed. He needed a stiff drink, and in that moment, he didn't give a damn if it was shaken or stirred. It had nothing to do with them changing the character. Under normal circumstances, he still prefers it shaken, not stirred. I'm harping on this, because it represents a misunderstanding a lot of people have about Casino Royale. It was a reboot, yes, but Bond is still Bond. He's the same character, and it was always clear that the tropes of the series would eventually return.

This film, was, for me, equal in brilliance to Casino Royale. It was the first return to the original Bond formula since the 1990's. In doing this Mendes actually created more variety, because he was able to distinguish this from the previous two entries, which had been a little more departed from the original screenplays. The 35mm film this was shot in was probably also a nod that Mendes wanted this film to appear like an older Bond movie. The train scene is obviously a reference to From Russia With Love, in which Connery fights Donald Grant, and if this wasn't enough Blofeld is the main villain. To me, it's clear this is a tribute to the older movies. Feel free to disagree, but that's my opinion anyhow. I agree wholeheartedly that Quantum Of Solace was awful-I think it was because of the lack of set pieces and the excessively fast editing. Oh and btw, Happy New Year everyone! :D

This is a terrible movie on so many different levels. For example; how one Earth do you make a car chase through one of the planet's most beautiful cities involving two stunning protoypes BORING? Ask Sam Mendes, he knows how. How do you render such a boring and ineffectual villain from such a diverse and interesting actor as Christoph Waltz? Again, ask Sam Mendes. Seriously, after the much celebrated (at the time) toughening up and modernising of the Bond character and franchise with CR and QoS, Skyfall and now this film have dragged bond right back into the Brosnan era, if not the Moore era. Never mind, we'll have a Bourne back again soon. And not a Jeremy Renner in sight. This cheesy throwback can die off all over again.

Does anyone know if Chris Stuckmann writes scripts or has a history in film? Like his reviews are soooo beyond good and thorough in regards to the story of a movie as well as other elements of it (cinematography, production, editing etc) that I don't even have to go to imdb or Wikipedia to get an okay to go see a movie or not. I swear Chris is definitely a guy who knows what he's talking about. I literally went to see Crimson Peak and while I couldn't some into words what it was missing, I watched his review and he pretty said what I was thinking (or brought about something I was feeling while watching the movie) and I thought, "I'll be damned! Over the course of the four last weeks, I have shown all the Daniel Craig Bond films in order to my 9th grade class here in Norway. They have also written reviews, watched your reviews, listened to the Bond tunes over the course of the years, and made presentations. We have also discussed the four films in class. Most of them put Skyfall as #1 and actually Spectre as #2, with Casino Royale a solid #3 and Quantum of Solace way back at #4. Four students gave Spectre top marks, and most of them gave it five out of six. I have watched all of the movies almost ten times, and over the course of time, Spectre has in fact made it to the top of my list. I think it is such a beautifully shot film, it is dark, mysterious, it really builds up the tension better than any other Bond film. Not to mention how well the music is mixed with the images. Just a thrilling ride in my opinion, and I am quite happy, to say the least, about being able to share the experience with my 14-year-olds. :-) I really like your reviews, btw!

One of the most frustrating things about this movie is that it took Daniel Craig, who was supposed to be more like an Ian Fleming character than any other 007 actor short of Timothy Dalton, and sent him right down the road into Cartoon Land. SPECTRE was a Kevin McClory creation, not a Fleming creation. They created that organization because they didn't want to start a real international incident with Russia during the Cold War. While Quantum of Solace was seizure inducing, too fast and unfocused in its direction and storytelling, it at least felt like it was happening more or less in the real world, a trend set by Casino Royale. Skyfall started the trend of being a bit too over the top for what Casino was, but was still a solid Bond film, but this felt like Part 1 to No Time To Die's Part 2 and both films got ridiculously cartoony, borrowing from Star Wars, and the casting of Blofeld, if you're even going to do Blofeld in a Craig Bond film, was way off - and I like Christoph Waltz as an actor. Casino Royale felt like it was its own Bond movie. Every other Craig film to varying degrees felt like the trap that many 007 films get into - they're trying to be whatever is fashionable and cool at the time and insert James Bond. And don't get me started on their mistreatment of Monica Bellucci. Great actress who seemed to be developing chemistry with Craig, and then she's out of the movie, so the younger woman who he seems to have no chemistry with can show up and "steal his heart." Wow, what a missed opportunity.

I feel like the reason why in Spectre it seems that Mendes is going back to the more traditional Bond formula is that Casino Royale was essentially a reboot, a young Bond recently promoted to double 0 status and not yet settled in his ways. Now that several films have elapsed, the character has aged, become wiser and more set in his ways, the original formula sets in (ordering vodka martinis shaken, not stirred, for instance), the 'traditional' formula more reflective of the suave, assured spy that Bond should be now.

I've often seen a fifty-fifty impression on the Craig Bond movies. Some love the more modern and somber takes, others like the classics. I think Spectre managed to mix both well. I love the fact that they actually tried to bring some context to the past, to tie together nods and pieces, and it shows once again that it's a reboot of sorts. You can in fact argue that while in Casino Royale he didn't care about his drinks, and now he's more... versed. They're obviously forcing it into the classics, without spoiling too muc, they've set up On Her Majesty's Secret Service, which is not only an underrated Bond movie, but a very underrated movie overall. And then there's the other set up, about which I won't say a thing. Spectre probably had too much stuff on focus. I am interested to see how it goes, and hopefully not in space.

No one mentions that Spectre is kind of a semi-remake or adaptation of From Russia With Love with Sean Connery. I mean I don't think that it's necessarily official, but that's why it seems so formulaic. Both start with a helicopter action scene, there's a train where Bond has an epic fight with a big menacing hitman guy. And Bond's love interest is a beautiful and classy blonde woman, just like Léa Seydoux. I think they both have snow and mountainous settings. Honestly I haven't seen either in a while haha but if you watch both you will understand their parallels and vibe are hard to ignore.

And afterwards he's said that he didn't mean it, and 1 more Bond film is still in his contract, as well as Broccoli stating that they want to hold on to him for as long as possible :) My hopes are up!

+Fossil Amoeba He probably did mean it, didn't expect a reaction and back pedaled. Surely he doesn't want to bite the hand that feeds him.

Question for people: If I want to watch Spectre yet know nothing (I mean nothing) about Bond, do I have to watch the others first? I'm someone who has to watch the first before I watch the sequel because I have to know what's going on.

I liked the more grounded bond... The only thing I have against this is that it was a bit unrealistic at times.. Like the escape from the hotel and the plane scene

Agreed. I just watched spectre after loving skyfall and casino royale, and spectre kinda ruins all the things i used to love about bond. He was human! Now he's damn near untouchable and never misses a shot and is back to being this very cliche movie hero.

Lee86 Not by that much, thanks...to the filmmakers, not you. I say thanks because it could have been much worse. Is he not invulnerable enough? That’s okay. You always have Die Hard 5 to make you hero unlikable so I’ve heard. Wow...

I love that it went back to the old Bond formula. Its my favorite Bond film since Roger Moore and I love that it went back to bond being a fantasy superhero instead of a gritty depressed guy with a lot of emotion. Don't get me wrong those were great for there own reasons but Specter is fantastic not the best but I like where it is going and looking forward to more Bond movies like it. I've been waiting for classic Bond to return and I'm so glad that he did.

I disagree. Spectre is not amazing and no where near the best Bond movie whatsoever. It had an underwhelming story that got kind of boring in a lot of scenes, especially with that whole side plot with this guy who wants to take over MI6 with technology, and it was just not handled very well. Also, the villains lack the presence that prior villains in the series had. Just because it went back to the traditional formula for Bond, doesn't mean it was very good, and this movie to me was good, but not great.

The “big guy” Indy fights by the plane in Raiders and the Thuggee guard in TOD is the same actor.
