The Tonex ecosystem is quite honestly blowing my mind right now, and at freakin' $399?!! The price of entry is definitely within even my meagerly limited investment budget. Thanks for the demo Glenn! Here's what I think. If you have a Kemper, stick with the Kemper, there's no reason to throw it away because you already have something that sounds good and it works. the ToneX is not necessarily gonna be an upgrade over the Kemper, the goal should be using the thing you already have to the best of your abilities. If it's your first modeler, get the ToneX

After announcing Kemper's new "Liquid Profiling" and USB Audio functions, it's still among the market-leading stuff. Although there have been many positive changes in the world of plugins since the release of Kemper, I still use it to "reamp" when I think it helps reach my goal. Plus I respect that it is continuously updated and expanded. Don't get me wrong, it's a matter of taste who chooses what (Tonex, Quad Cortex, plugins etc.) because Kemper is obviously not the only way just one option out of many.

yeah. we wont get rid of our kempers. why? 1. We got two Kempers wired with 2 G90s in one single Rack, having the computer from the IEM System switching the patches. Setting up for a gig is basically removing the rack lids and plugging 2 XLR, 1 AC and 1 Midi cable and both guitars are set up. The rack weights around 24kg - so basically the same weight as one single Engl E642 Invader. 2. I/O - i never was confronted with a situation where the Kemper was insufficient. If you need it, it's for sure on the backplate of this thing. You can provide the public address with a direct signal with IR and at the same time drive a 4x12 with the integrated class D. You do not need a reamp-box as it is integrated. It even is smart enough to prioritize the front plate input so you can run a cable very fast in case there is something wrong with the wireless. 3. its everywhere. If a bassist from another band drops our guitar rack, there is still a high chance that there are kempers at the venue and we could plug in a usb stick with your patches. The kemper provides us with a full on solution and is the most convenient way to deliver our guitar tone to stage or studio. Always when i see pedals like the Tonex, even though everything you say about it is true (tone n stuff), the first thing that comes to my mind is the sound of loose contacts. - come on, we all know this guy, using 10 pedals patched with the cheapest cables he could find producing monk hums as soon as the shit is plugged in while any foot switching holds a probability of 25-40% of total signal loss. YES the kemper is expensive, YES there might be better stuff out there in terms of tone, YES the Kemper is not that easy to use but there is no as convenient, reliable, and full solution. Edit: And there is one more thing - nobody cares about guitar tone anyway. I personally cant stand the guitar tone of Metallica and Pantera since mid-scooping sounds like fingernails on a blackboard to my ears - but everyone likes those bands. A none musician cant even discern bass from guitar nor does he even care - are you guys making music for people or just for fellow musicians so that they can pretend to do it better?

@@MotownGuitarJoe Yeah but something simple like blended two amps or having two amps hardpanned while playing, doing that on Axe FX will take you a couple seconds to set-up. I like the things this ToneX thing does and it might be a better replacement for the Kemper as a super slick and cheap amp cloner/profiler, it sounds great but the gear head in me is looking at all the functionality Quad Cortex and Axe Fx offer and this really touches none of those other areas at all in regards to modeling, synth, stupid amount of delays, modeled distortion/tubescreamers, . I respect Glens opinion on the sound/tone being great and such but he kinda glosses over this area a bit. ToneX seems like a great standard amp/cab set-up replacement whereas the others can replace full rigs with entire pedalboard solutions. On the other hand if all you were using those other things for was getting just a good amp/cab which is probably the case for tons of metal bands out there, this would definitely be the one-hitter solution for them.

@@scrotzki789 There really is no one size fits all solution in music gear. As far as amp modeling and the entire digital rig replacement thing goes that holds even more true. What works well for one may not work well at all for another. Everyone's needs as an artist differ drastically depending on what you do for your project. I am a HUGE fan of Neurals amp models. I have 4 of their stand alones (Plini, Cory Wong, Fortin Cali and Nolly) and I really want to get the Quad Cortex sooner or later. I think the ToneX is pretty cool...I think if I am going to invest in a unit like this I will probably go all in on the Quad but this will definitely serve a purpose and be a really good product for a wide demographic of players.

@@linnickschlanter4712 Nothing could be further from the truth. Every piece in the signal chain is important and will make a difference. Especially the amplifier. All were talking about here is DSP. The DSP, analog preamp (tube or solid state) and power amp (tube or solid state), are your 3 main components in the system. Once the Tonex converts the signal to analog and sends it to the preamp, it still has to travel through 2 more components. If you plug into crap equipment, you get crap sound. It doesn't matter how good the signal is from your source. The biggest obstacle to overcome for the average musician is knowing how these products work on a fundamental level. Here's something that may help you out. I'm going to make a statement. If you agree with it, you most likely have a very good working knowledge of these products. If you disagree, you need to do some research. "There is no such thing as a digital amplifier." 99% will say I'm wrong. However it really is a true statement. Assuming you disagree, find out why its true. If you do that, everything I just said will make complete sense.

I’m not a live musician at this moment but I know I don’t have to worry about moving and breaking down an analog/tube amp setup. I also saw one of my friend’s waning patience for his Quad Cortex preorder being stymied by COVID’s impact on shipping and manufacturing at the time and decided to just go for the Kemper. I have very few regrets, but I do think Kemper should revisit and maybe release a revamp with more current processing tech.

I always buy older tech to save money as I know the audio quality difference is negligible (as shown i your audio examples). So, would I sell something because a new thing that’s better and less expensive is out? Hell no. I would still be spending extra money for something I don’t need. I’ve been going back and forth trying to decide whether or not I should get something like a ToneX or a real amp. I’m not gonna be recording with it since I have ToneHub but I want to get away from plugins when playing to myself and doing jam sessions. Digital rigs are more practical live but I don’t really gig enough for that to be a consideration. I like playing through my friend’s 5150 and there is just something about it you don’t get through studio monitors (again, not that there is an audible difference) but that could rack up money real quick. Any advice?

Do the presets sound great and indistinguishable from a quality tube amp? Do you need a real cabinet or does it sound awesome through the PA with powered speakers using the cab simulator?

Had the pedal for about 3 weeks. I'm super impressed with it. I started playing with the software before that and then I realized how good it was. I literally stopped using any other amp plugins (I mean I'll use the ampknob from time to time - but this will stop me from getting any more amp plugins honestly) - and it even cut down the time I use my real amp. Because ... I literally captured it and uploaded it to tone net in the way I use it most of the time. This thing is absolutely incredible and if it would have been out last year when I bought my amp - there's a good chance I would have gotten only the tonex pedal + a better set of monitors or a solid state power amp and a cab. Really excited to see what comes next with this tech and pedal.

@SpectreSoundStudios Glen so I have to ask this question because of conversations and videos you have done regarding speakers affecting an amplifiers clarity, articulation, and overall tone. Pedals like the Tone-X, Boss IR 200, and so on have Amp Models, and Speaker Cab models (IRs) that emulate 4x12 Marshall, Fender Twins, and Yada Yada, which is great if you are midi straight into a computer or recording board that captures that sound as intended, but what about using such things for live performances? Wouldn't the PA or powered cabinet change these tones drastically as they are not loaded with the speakers that a 59 Marshall 4x12 or Fender Twin Reverb are loaded with? I am not sure that these are going to be useful as part of a live rig. It would seem to me that an album and the live show's tones would be vastly different, no? Just curious as I have never played with IR gear and am not sure how one would use such tech in a live setting and achieve the same results as in a studio. Thanks for all the rants and demos you are not only entertaining but are a cornucopia of musical wizardry.

I tried to like the ToneX plugin, but I honestly thought it was nothing new as far as the amp models. In fact, I thought they sounded like something out of a Line6 Fizz Pod. I get it, its cheaper and it's convenient for a hobby guitar player/recording at home, or those who have expensive amp collections. As for me, the Fractal FM3 in my opinion based on how I use it and need it for my situation is by far the best. The amount of support, constant tweaks and updates we are getting is incredible. Honestly If it were to discontinue It wouldn't bother me at all. Do I even have to explain what the FM3 is capable all its features? Before you comment about "amp capture" I don't think Fractal has to worry about the amp capture features, their models are very close and each eq and master volumes react just like an amp would from my experience tweaking these parameters with a 2x12 cab at loud stage volume. Not knocking the ToneX down, but I can assure you just like any other modeler give it a few years and you'll end up seeing it on Reverb and Craigslist for $200.

@@darkstar4494 yup! You can have 4 different signal chains with 4 different inputs and outputs, that would limit your processing power, indeed, but for simpleer rigs you can also do that. The way we have it set is like this: 1st path one guitar, 2nd path the clean bass, 3rd path the other guitar and the 4th path de distorted bass. Bass requieres for us 2 signals to compress the low end without distorting it and to apply distorsion only to the mids and highs. The only thing with this kind of setup is to be aware of how to maximise the processing ability, for that you should be aware that the QC has 2 ADSP-SC589 processors and the first 2 paths use one and the other 2 another one, so you should think a bit ahead how to spread the effects to take full advantage of its power

Glen love ya stuff but sorry the Kemper has Rig Editor which basically tears everything else up. The Cortex has zero software (it’s in selected beta users) and is not general release and has taken 2 years to come out. The Kemper is also rock solid, you don’t see Kemper amps failing onstage often, why would a brand new product not have an xlr out and use a stereo jack? Also the delay and modular effects on a Kemper are a whole lot more than just Phaser or Delay….you can create some insane chains. $399 is great to access a new pedal….what it doesn’t have is 10 years of delivering on what counts and that’s why I’m keeping my Kemper and why I’ll buy a Kemper 2. It was a £1400 investment that has lasted for 10+ years and they are still putting out stuff for it. On the other hand IK multimedia abandoned a lot of stuff and have plugins out every year… so I have a feeling this won’t kill Kemper in the slightest, it seems that it’s missing two key effects (what type of guitarist doesn’t use any form of delay?!) and modulation effects are again so useful. Keeping my Kemper but nice try 🤘

Saying that a 400$ tonex beats the Kemper and the Quad that cost a lot more, while ignoring the fact that they give you *a complete rig*, is very unfair. As a performing guitarist, the ToneX is pretty useless, and when I'm in the studio I use real amps. If there will be a version of the ToneX that has all the effects and stuff that would be great but it would cost a lot more and only than, the pricing comparison will be relevant.

Pro presets are what is going to make or break these platforms. You can get countless Kemper profiles by professionals, maybe even by the bands or producers who made your favourite record. The Quad Cortex has lots of technical improvements but doesn't have the same level of adoption by pros, you can't get the same pro presets and even the big amp simulators by Neural (Fortin Nameless, etc.) CAN'T EVEN RUN ON IT YET. If the Tonex can get real pro tones, it stands a chance - especially at the price. But otherwise who cares in an oversaturated market of digital amp sims?

Quad people are already not happy with Neural waiting for those plugins and that desktop app they promised at launch. Comparison is the thief of joy. The point is that you can get the job done in the future with cheaper products. If your old device (Kemper/QC) still works for you then continue to use it and stop bitching. Maybe I'm being too much of a musician and less of an engineer, but on the 'piano lows' topic, the word 'piano' might not have been used for the piano instrument, but for the dynamic level (the volume of your playing/picking). In wind instruments (my main field), dynamics go (with some exaggerations on both ends) from piano to forte, where notes played at a 'piano' level are quiet, and 'forte' notes are loud. History lesson for those interested: the piano (instrument)'s original name was pianoforte, meaning that it could play more dynamics than, say, a harpsichord, which only had one volume level of playing. i can't remember why it was shortened to just piano, but that's why it's called a piano instead of a 'loud-soft harpsichord' or something. piano literally translates to soft in italian, and forte is loud

P.s. have you already done a video “getting started on your first digital amp for old farts”?

I'd say get something for a reason. Back when I got into gear I went for an HX Stomp cause I wasn't sure what kinda amps I liked, and wanted to explore on a budget, both amps, cabs, pedals, and whatnot, before I spend tons of money and time on amps I might not even like. If you wanna just explore different amps, get a modeler. If you wanna use very specific amp models, or have a digital print of your own favorite ones with your favorite settings as backup or so, get a profiler. If you want to do it all on your PC instead, just get any decent interface and explore plugins!

This will be my next piece of kit. This with the headrush MX-5 that I've already got combined with two air steps is going to be a pretty awesome setup.
