Directed By Mike Buonaiuto
Lyrics:
She loved her // like that
but telling her family? they might snap
So confined she couldn’t confide
She was playing girl games, offline
She had an answer, but she didn’t ask for this
Every little chit chat was a massive risk
If she discussed it they’d be disgusted
disown her and that’d be disastrous
She knew that it wasn’t their fault, They were brainwashed
They believed some crazy things
It’d cause her a smorgasbord of disorders
If she listened to what they would think
They thought that she was smiling, but they misidentified
because the clenching of her teeth was just her biting on the lie
And her logic said...
It’s gonna be ok, it’s gonna be ok
this issue is temporary so attempt to wait for one - more - day
There’s nothing wrong with you, it’s them - they’re just backwards
You’re in the future, they’re in the past
and they would abuse you if they knew the facts about it
It’s gonna be ok, it’s gonna be ok
this issue is temporary so attempt to wait until - you’re - safe
You love her, don’t ever feel you should apologise
can’t control your feelings or compromise,
i know it’s difficult to find a guiding a light now but you’ll come out alive
So
HOLD ON
Until you find the friends who’ll support you
Until you find a place you feel secure, you need to
HOLD ON
Until you’re independent
Wherever in the spectrum you are
It’s gonna be ok
It’s gonna be ok
They didn’t ask, he didn’t tell
If they found out, they’d give him hell
if they knew the lowdown that he fell for people
regardless of pronouns
he was already tormented every day
but it’d escalate if he couldn’t keep a straight
face // So what’ll crack first
the eggshells he treads on or himself
Online he was everything he wanted
But real life wouldn’t let him be as honest
it’d just bring violence his way like
“How do you like this attention you special snowflake?”
They had problems at home and had to vent their feelings
or an underdeveloped sense of empathy
but knowing that didn’t make it any easier
All he could do was breathe
til his logic said...
It’s gonna be ok, it’s gonna be ok
this issue is temporary so attempt to wait for one - more - day
step back from the situation // the world’s not a movie, it’s not fiction
you can’t think “say it, they’ll accept it”
Some people kick you down just because you’re different
It’s gonna be ok, it’s gonna be ok
this issue is temporary so attempt to wait until - you’re - safe
Be rational
Unless you think they won’t attack at all
You gotta keep it in man, be practical
And I know you feel trapped and small right now but you’ll come out alive
I CAN choose my friends
and I CAN choose my family
If they won’t accept me
then others will have me

Boyinaband The thing is there are people of all types who sexuality is repressed by people in general. For instance in my area this guy actually killed his parents due to sexual repression and as far as I know he was straight. It is sad that we still can't express our sexuality in general when they just think it is unclean. I think we should honestly teach in general what sexual repression does to people. How it can literally drive people insane.

@@somewhatcoconut3970 ah well... it's a lot to go over but basically he admitted to cheating on his former gf, and admitted that some of the girls he cheated on her with (emotionally cheated, not physically) were minors, but he wasn't aware they were minors at the time. And several girls came forward and said when he found out their ages, he backed off immediately, but he also cheated with Russ's gf and went after another person russ was interested in, honestly it's a lot, but there are videos on youtube that go over it in more detail. He tried to make an "apology" video, but it felt more like self victimizing and was really poorly done and we're a honestly just waiting for a proper response. I still really like this song tho

I thought my father wouldn't accept me, but that my mother would. For years, I grew up confiding in her while my dad was away at work, never connecting with me, and I spent a great percentage of my teen years in a escalating feud with my father over a great deal of things. Eventually they split, and I could finally relax at home for a while. I thought it was finally over. He was finally out of my life. When in college I discovered that I was bisexual. I told my closest friends almost immediately, and the outpouring of love and support was the kindest thing I had ever experienced. It took 6 months to come out to my parents. I decided it was best to make a global announcement on social media, so I could include as many people as possible in the announcement. When I finally did it, it was the opposite of my expectation. My dad didn't understand... but he wanted to. We talked about it over beers when I visited for Christmas, had Thai takeout on Christmas day because the rest of the family had the flu and we were too lazy to cook, and to this day he still asks about it. Wanting to understand where I am, what I'm feeling, who I like. To give me advice on relationships and to be there for me when I need it. We still get Thai takeout on Christmas now, because that night was so good and we wanted to start a tradition. We've spent the last 4 years building the foundation for a real, trusting relationship out of the ashes of my teenage years, because he has been there to support me since. My mother had the opposite reaction. She told me I was wrong. She told me she didn't believe me. That when I was growing up I had never shown signs of that, that I was confused or just exploring, she felt betrayed that I hadn't pulled her aside to have a discussion about it beforehand. As if she was in charge of my sexuality. As if she could choose who I was. To this day, I have no idea if she has come to believe me or not. I couldn't be assed to ask, frankly. When I was 17, I thought my mom left my dad because he was a terrible person. Now at 23, I know for a fact that he left her. I can choose my family.

I only realized my identity a year or two ago. I found out about sexualities and identities through Pinterest (probably not the most reliable source, but whatever) and then kept researching it until I knew about almost everything. I came out to my mom when we were in the car. I trapped myself and brought up how she had told me she had a crush on a girl in the fourth grade. She then asked me if I thought I liked girls or boys or both or neither and I said I’d be okay with any gender. Her not using any labels helped a lot. At that same moment, she told me she was also pansexual/bisexual (he didn’t fully see the difference even though she knew about nonbinary because she thought of bisexual as two or more, but now she does and identifies as pansexual). I got a therapist because I developed depression and anxiety. My dad was kind of not for it, but he dealt with it. So my therapist specialized in LGBTQ+. He found out, got mad at my mom for not telling him I was LGBTQ+ and I told him it wasn’t her choice to make and that it was mine and he had to deal with it. He was still mad, but not as mad. He got over it and didn’t care that I was pansexual. Then I realized that I did not conform with my gender identity. For a while I thought I was genderflux, then agender, and I kept telling my mom, but not my dad. Finally, when I realized I was genderfluid, I talked to him. And he was just kind of an asshole. He kept talking about transitioning and how it wasn’t a good idea for medical reasons no matter how many times I said I didn’t want to. He then said he thought it was not ok that having to respect people’s gender pronouns was a law in Canada and that he should have freedom of speech and I cried. He said the other day when I wore my pronoun pin that had male pronouns on it, he got kind of mad because what did I know about growing up as a boy. I told him people hurt and kill themselves over pronouns. He told me everyone hurts. He told me he would respect my pronouns in my house begrudgingly, but outside of the home, pronouns for other people were a case by case thing. I wanted to tell him what an asshole he was for saying that. But I know he loves and supports me and is trying. He’s just making this way more of a big deal than it has to be. And right when I was thinking about how much I hated him, he said he was scared to share his feelings because he thought I would hate him and that when I was 13 I could choose which home I lived at (my parents are divorced) and that he didn’t want to lose me and now I feel bad because I can’t decide if I hate him but don’t want to or if I don’t hate him but I want to. I’m just so spun into a web. At school, I have an LGBTQ+ club I’m a part of. All of my friends respect my pronouns and still love me. And online, it’s the same thing. Everyone accepts and loves me. Plot twist? I’m 12. I just feel lost...

I know nothing of this because I'm not like this but I have gay friends and their attitude towards people like this is Fucking deal with it I am who I am and if you're not happy oh fucking well. Don't lay down taking their fucking crap if they don't like it oh well. Friends are family just the family you create yourself find ones who you can absolutely trust. You two are not alone on this journey I promise hundreds of thousands of people feel exactly the same way you do. But I will tell you this the best people to surround yourself with are ones who stand out already. Make friends with Goths, metal heads, and Juggalos they never judge. I'm a juggalo metalhead MWCL. I accept you for who you are.

I choose my friends as my family, we all don't have a good relationship with our families, so we made our own. I'll choose them every time, over my family, my family is very old valued. Ps. My girlfriend, she's bi and I am pan ftm, broke up with me 'cause she was scared of our old fashioned families finding out about us, our friendship now is getting back to how it was before, and now we can be ourselves around each other; we may get back together later on in high school. You never know...

i may not be gay or bi or anything like that, but i have many friends that are bi, pan, and lesbian. no matter who you are, be yourself and the right people will love you for who you are. there is no reason to hide, and i am glad you were able to come out to your parents, and if you are ever feeling sad or depressed, just remember that you have friends and family that care about you and want to help you. congrats to all the non-straight people out there, because you are special in your own ways and i hope you are able to confess like many others have.

I'm still very young and in my young teenage years. Lately, I've been starting to question my sexuality, and I now identify as pansexual. My mom is extremely supportive of me no matter what, but unfortunately, my dad and I have never had a good relationship, and my grandparents are super homophobic. For now I'm not really telling anyone except my mom, but I really don't care what people think.

I've come back to this song completely out as trans, having my hair cut, getting a binder, seeing a psychiatrist, and having my name and pronouns all figured out. Feels good. I've been feeling really euphoric recently. My friends have switched to calling me Dan, my sister is really interested in learning about it, and my parents are doing their best to help me, in their own ways. My dad started picking up on my dysphoria more, and has been doing really well with my name and using the masculine in Hebrew. Overall, I'm doing good. Being me. I feel like I'm getting somewhere. Happy pride!

I'm half-out to a few close friends. I go to an all girl school so its kind of annoying when the teachers always saying things like, "Okay, girls/ladies/women." I can't do anything about it because I'm not sure I'll be supported and people will say I'm "too young." A few people who I thought I could trust have stopped talking to me because of it. I told my mum but I can't get my hair cut or wear trousers to school yet. She supports me but I'm not sure all of my family will so I can't come out. I accidentally let it slip to a girl in my class who stayed quiet about it but she let me know she supports me and my gender won't matter to her. I'm so lucky to know her. I want to tell my dad but I can't just go do it and don't understand why its so difficult or what I can do. This is so hard to figure out and I'm sorry for saying this all here. I just needed to get it out.

My Granddaughter, who is gay, shared the link to your video with me and I'm super impressed. The message is clear and extremely important for young people to hear. When my Granddaughter came out to us, it was a non-issue. She is still the same child I have loved from day one, and who she is attracted to is not what defines her as a person. That is her business and her right to her feelings. And I will always be proud of her. I just wish more parents, grandparents, family, and friends accepted their children as they are, without judgement or the need to mold them into what they want them to be. Thank you for speaking up for those who need to hear your message.

after listening to this song countless time. I just realized the "hold on" could mean both "hold on and endure until you can be free" and "hold on and think, don't do anything rash (such as self harm). The lyrics of this song is absolutely powerful and impactful, it is how human should be like, thinking and caring for each other despite the difference between every single one of us. It is a huge step, but together, we can make that huge step a reality.

hey im four years late, I was binging your videos and i found this one and started crying halfway through. even if dave doesn't see this, even if nobody sees it, im still putting this out there. when this video came out i was questioning my gender and sexuality at the same time, when I lived in a small primarily religious town with my very religious parents and every day was some new form of hell for me. even if I was never physically hurt, like many other lgbt people are, it was still there, nagging at the edges of my vision every moment and it just wore me down so badly. I wish I would've seen this video back then. but I know someone else out there saw it when they needed to, and even if this isn't the point when I needed it the most, I'm currently out as a transgender, bisexual man. I can't transition medically speaking until I'm 18, but that's not very far away, and I guess this is just the last push. with this song as the thing I needed to get me through it. so thank you dave from boyinaband, thank you to cry and minx and dwain whose name really is satisfying to say. if you ever see this, just know you made a trans kid somewhere really fucking happy. thanks.

I'm safe. I left my homophobic and transphobic family. It wasn't terrible but it wasn't healthy and didn't allow me to be me. But I've had a taste of not feeling free. I consider myself lucky but I know people who can't come out or people who did who really shouldn't have. If you feel trapped, my heart breaks for you. The moment you get to breath freedom is worth the wait. I know it's tough but you are strong and can get through this. And to everyone who put their effort into making this amazing song, it's on my playlist and I listen to it every week. Almost every day. I love it! Especially the line, "I can choose my friends and I can choose my family, if they won't accept me then others will have me!" I yell it out every damn time. Thank you so much for making this. This idea that "you should come out" can be dangerous and I'm so glad this song tackles that because sometimes it is dangerous to come out. Some people just don't understand us and will hurt us. That is reality. But it's not forever. The wait is tough. It's so tough but as someone who is surrounded by people trying to get my pronouns right, respecting me and now a wonderful bf who I cherish so much, it's so fucking worth it. Don't come out to people who will harm you. Stay safe this holiday season and thank you to everyone who made this video.

I've listened to this song a lot in the past 5 years. It's gotten me through a lot of rough times. As a trans lesbian living in the Bible Belt, I've had to hide who I am from anyone that isn't LGBTQ+. It used to give me hope that things would be okay one day. But it's not the same after learning about Cry. I was groomed for 4 years, and was eventually r*ped by the man grooming me. I just can't listen to this song anymore, knowing Cry is in it, after everything he's done. EDIT: Welp, this comment aged like milk. Fuck Dave.

I’m a straight guy and a Christian. I absolutely love the message in this song, it hurts me that people are casted out of families because they’re differently. It might be different. I was surprised when I told my mom I am Bisexual. I thought she would be accepting because she is an advocate at her school for LGBT and has a lot of gay TA's. But she wasn't accepting really at all. She said she doesn't want to know if I like a girl, date a girl, have sex with a girl, and she said I should choose to be straight because it would be easier. But then my dad who I thought would be the same way, was extremely accepting. He told me I could bring girls home to meet him, talk to him about it, he said he would introduce me to some Lesbians, and he said he knows a Lesbian couple who have been together for 20 years that I could talk to if I wanted, and he said he would like to fully understand so he could help his students. Moral of the story: you think you know someone, they may surprise you.

"if they knew the lowdown that he fell for people regardless of pronouns" I'm so glad you included a Pan guy in this one. Sometimes coming out as Pan can be more difficult than coming out as gay. To take an example from my own life: My brother was gay, when he came out, my mother's reaction was "This is news?" When I came out as bi (I didn't know Pan was a thing back then, I'm definitely Pan though) My mom said, "You'll find a guy and forget this whole thing" Like somehow because I wasn't set on one gender I was somehow less valid than my brother who was. It hurt, and I never really got to tell her that before she passed. It still kinda hurts. Dad seems to accept it more, but I don't really date much anyway.

This song got me through a lot. Cry's parts helped me ground myself and what I was feeling, helped me realize I was pansexual and nonbinary. Now I feel that it's been tainted. It's been about 2 weeks, since what he did surfaced, and, it's honestly hard to come back to this song for me. As an abuse survivor, it makes me feel so.. confused and sick to come back to a song that used to make me feel so safe. I mainly wanted to say this to get some thoughts out, and help anyone else coming back to this song know that they aren't alone. It's normal to feel this way. "It'll be okay."

"Online he was everything he wanted but real life wouldn't let him be as honest." This really hit close to home, considering that I only feel safe in social medias and have made many online friends that I can talk to and relate to my problems. Though, being honest in the real world for me is torture and I can barely say anything, fearing that I might let something slip out. Really, this song is my cure for any depressing mood I'm in or the situation im dealing with. A huge masterpiece these guys made. Literally deserve the whole world's attention. Thanks for making us LGBTQ+ members feel like this song is a coping strategy for being insecure about their sexuality and fears about telling their parents.

I'm a guy that suffers from gender dysphoria and I like guys, which make me technically gei. This is exactly what I fear from my father. I don't know him, he doesn't know me. He has been a heavy drinker since the last 20 years, and he never took care of his kids. I don't know what hobbies he has, but I know his favourite drink. When I told my best friend, he basically shrugged it off as a "eh, you know, you do you." and we're still very good friends. When I told my mom, she basically told me (rough translation) "I felt that you were a bit different" and she's aknowledged it. We talked about it maybe twice afterwards, and she was very supportive. She taught me something important through it : "if you truly love someone, you want them to be happy, especially your kids. If they aren't happy the way they are, it's on you, the parent, to be the shoulder they need." Remember dat. Cuz true dat. Edit : It's been about a year. My relationship with my mother has devolved into the biggest fuel to my depression. I learned a lot about her and it turns out that she's a liar of incredible scale and has thrown my dysphoria in my face and has become an overall awful person, but only to me and my big sister. Also, she's trying to extort the little money I have/make. Too many things to put here.

I know how that feels, I'm a male who is bisexual and yesterday I finally found the courage to tell my mom and brother, it was the first time I'd ever admitted it out loud, never even said it when I was alone. My brother's reaction was basically "Neat, wanna watch some memes on KZbin?" And my mom said she always had a feeling, I can't be happier at the fact that it wasn't a big thing for them, they were happy I trusted them enough to tell them, but the problem for me is my dad and my grandma, she was the one who taught me how to cook, one of the few things I am truly great at, and one of the few things I truly enjoy, we have long conversations where we trade recipes and talk about different methods for cooking certain things, and it hurts so damn bad when she starts talking about gay people. More times than I can count she's said she wishes surgeons would go in and perform a brain operation on gay people to "Fix what's wrong with them" and gets aggravated whenever there's a gay kiss in a movie or game, I love her and cherish the things she's taught me but I'm too afraid of what her reaction might be if I ever told her, and my dad doesn't have strong feelings one way or the other but he always supports her side of things. I have decided to content myself with the acceptance from the few people I have it from, those few who care to see me for who I really am, and to those of you in similar situations I pray you find those few who love and support you, not despite who you are, but truly accepting who you are.

Man.... To think, five years ago I gave this song a listen and then just passed it by without another thought. Not even the whole thing I think, just wasn't my kind of song. And then here I am, back again after randomly remembering it, when both the message resonates on another whole level, as well as my taste in music shifting. This song has helped a ton of people, I'm sure of it, in so many ways. You all did great work with this song, both with the song itself being great and also to convey an important message that I don't think I've actually ever heard outside of this song, besides individual advice in passing. Thank you.

Same here (w/ regards to... pretty much all of your comment Haven, not being LGBT but having depression/anxiety and finding this song helpful) Also helpful was the "You CAN choose your friends, you CAN choose you family". I'm in a safe and supportive place now, but my family was emotionally abusive towards me growing up, and that part just made me literally burst into tears (of the cathartic sort). I'm still struggling to come to terms with all that and get away from the scars it left behind, and stuff like that helps so much.

I have fallen in love with young women the way I am expected to fall in love with young men, and sometimes it is extremely difficult to convince myself that I will be okay. It's honestly so comforting being told that it'll be okay and to hold on. I listen to this song frequently and it's 2018! I came out to my mom over three times. First it was Bisexual: It was 2015, I was in 5th grade, newly introduced to the LGBT Community. I told her, and she brushed me off saying "You're only in 5th grade, you can't know that." I agreed with her. I came out to her again here there, too insignificant for me to remember... Then, 2017, 8th grade. I told her I was Queer, I was constantly switching from Pan to Ace over and over... And she said "You're only 14, you can't possibly know that. I thought I had a crush on a girl in middleschool... And besides if you've never had a crush before how could you know? You're Just Confused." My heart shattered that day. Now I believe I'm Asexual, currently with a girlfriend, scared out of my mind because today was my last day of 8th grade and in my yearbook my friends called me gay, I know for a fact my mother will want to see my yearbook... And with those on the inside of the cover? And I have to brush it off and say something like "Oh no my friends just call me gay for the fun of it." I've come out more than enough times for her to not believe a word of that. I Am Terrified.
