What I learned in school vs. What I didn't learn in school.
iTunes: goo.gl/n4EgkZ | Bandcamp: goo.gl/gDetLT
I can't remember feeling so passionate whilst writing something in ages. I absolutely love a lot of the subjects I mention in this - astronomy, particle physics, pure maths... but I hate that everyone is forced to learn them. It should be a choice. There are a million other things wrong with education, but this one stood out as the most obvious and most insane.
The point of this song is to get people talking - if you share it, use #DontStayInSchool so we can all get involved in the conversation.
Lyrics:
I wasn’t taught how to get a job
but I can remember dissecting a frog
I wasn’t taught how to pay tax
but I know loads about Shakespeare's classics
I was never taught how to vote
they devoted that time to defining isotopes
I wasn’t taught how to look after my health
but mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell
Never spent a lesson on current events
instead I studied The Old American West
I was never taught what laws there are.
I was never taught what laws there are.
Let me repeat - I was not taught the laws for the country I live in,
but I know how Henry the VIII killed his women.
Divorced beheaded died, divorced beheaded survived
glad that’s in my head instead of financial advice
I was shown the wavelengths of different hues of light
but I was never taught my human rights
Apparently there’s 30, do you know them? I don’t
Why the hell can’t we both recite them by rote?!
I know igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks
Yet I don’t know squat about trading stocks
Or how money works at all - where does it come from?
Who controls it? How does the thing that motivates the world function?
not taught how to budget and disburse my earnings
I was too busy rehearsing cursive.
Didn’t learn how much it costs to raise a kid or what an affidavit is
but I spent days on what the quadratic equation is
negative b plus or minus the square root of b squared
minus 4ac over 2a
That’s insane, that’s absolutely insane.
They made me learn that over basic first aid
How to recognise the most deadly Mental disorders // or
diseases with preventable causes // How to buy a
house with a mortgage // if I could afford it
‘cause abstract maths was deemed more important
than advice that would literally save thousands of lives
but it’s cool, ‘cause now I could tell you if the number of unnecessary deaths caused by that choice was prime.
Never taught present day practical medicines,
but I was told what the ancient hippocratic method is
“I’ve got a headache, the pain is ceaseless
what should I take?” umm... maybe try some leeches?
“Could we discuss domestic abuse and get the facts
or how to help my depressed friend with their mental state?”
Ummm... no but learn mental maths
because “you won’t have a calculator with you every day!”
They say it’s not the kids, the parents are the problem
Then if you taught the kids to parent that’s the problem solved then!
All this advice about using a condom
but none for when you actually have a kid when you want one
I’m only fluent in this language, for serious?
The rest of the world speaks two, do you think I’m an idiot?
They chose the solar over the political system
So like a typical citizen now I don’t know what I’m voting on
which policies exist, or how to make them change
mais oui, je parle un peu de Francais
So at 18, I was expected to elect a representative
For a system I had never ever ever ever been presented with
But I won’t take it
I’ll tell everyone my childhood was wasted
I’ll share it everywhere how I was “educated”
And insist these pointless things

This video is getting a lot of attention now so I just want to clarify - "Don't Stay in School" isn't inferring students shouldn't stay in school, it's saying topics which aren't practically useful shouldn't stay in school. There are obviously a lot of benefits to getting an education, I'm just concerned that the topics are not prioritized well at all.

You are missing the point. You learn all that stuff so that you know whats out there so the mathematicians and scientists of tommorow can be cultivated. Maybe you didnt learn that but through school other kids may have found something they are interested in.Knowing what political party to vote for isnt going to help us when we cant figure out a way to stop burning fossil fuels. While i agree that most of the things in this song should be taught as well. You shouldnt really be saying the rest of the stuff is pointless. If you dont understand science then how are you going to be able to choose between two parties each pushing different policies on the enviroment or any other number of issues?

YOUR RIGHTS 30 HUMAN RIGHTS (you're welcome) 1. All human beings are born free and equal (right not to be discriminated against) 2. Everyone is entitled to these rights, regardless of factors beyond their control (sex, age, race etc. It's kind of like number 1, but specifically pertains to the document itself) 3. Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person (you can't be imprisoned, assaulted, or killed without a damn good reason, like you commited a crime for instance. 4. You have the right not to be enslaved in any form 5. You have ther right to not be tortured or subjected to inhumane or degrading punishment 6. Everyone, everywhere has the right to recognition as a person under the law 7. Everyone has the right to protection under the law, and to be subject to the same laws as everyone else (nobody is imune from the law, and nobody is to be punnished any differently from anyone else for breaking it) 8. Everyone has the right to an effective remedy by the competent national tribunals for acts violating the fundamental rights granted him by the constitution or by law. (Verbatim) 9. No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile. (verbatim, self explanitory) 10. Everyone is entitled in full equality to a fair and public hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal, in the determination of his rights and obligations and of any criminal charge against him. (everyone is equal in law) 11. You have the right to be presume innocent until proven guilty in a court of law where you were given all aplicble defence. Also you cant be punished for a crime retroactively (in other words you can't be punished for commitiing a crime that wasn't a crime at the time you did it, and you can't be given a harsher sentence now, if the penalty was less at the time you commited the offence) 12. You have the right to privacy and not to be slandered or have your private corespondence messed interfeed with (right not to be bugged without a warrant, that sort of thing) and the right not to be slandered or defamed. 13. You have the right to go where you like and stay where you like within the borders of your state, and you have the right to leave your country if you want and return to your country if you want. 14. You have the right to asylum 15. You have the right to a nationality. nobody can be denied their nationality, or denied the right to change their nationality legaly 16. You have the right to a family and to marry whoevery you want, provided everyone is consenting and of legal age. 17. Everyone has the right to property, and to not be deprived of that property without a legal reson. 18. You're entitled to believe what you like and to be a member of any religion you want 19. You have the right to freedom of expression and opinion 20. You have the right to peaceful assembly and association, and the right not to be forced to be a member of any group you don't want to be a part of 21. You have the right to vote, and take part in the politics of your country regardless of sex, race etc 22. You have the right to social security 23. Everyone has the right to work and to not be forced to work, everyone has the right to be paid equally and fairly and the right to belong to a trade union 24. Everyone has the right to rest and leisure, including reasonable limitation of working hours and periodic holidays with pay. (verbatim) 25. You have the right to an adequate standard of living (food, Clean drinking water, shelter, healthcare, social security help and so on) 26. You have the right to education 27. Everyone has the right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to share in scientific advancement and its benefits. Everyone has the right to the protection of the moral and material interests resulting from any scientific, literary or artistic production of which he is the author. (verbatim, but the two parts before and after are numbered and would fuck up my numbering here lol) 28. Everyone has the right to live in a society that observes these rights 29. Everyone has the right to live in a society where everyon has a duty to uphold these rights 30. nobody has the right to interpret any of these rights as permision to deprive you of your rights (basically lol) I have summerised many of these for brevity (and because I honestly don't know how many characters you're allowed in these coments lol). If i have misinterpreted any of them please forgive me and of course feel free to correct me in the coments. Some juristictions have adional rights enshrined in law that apend to this, such as the american constitution, wherein the first amendment details the "bill of rights". Also the European human rights act both of which I encourage you to read. Below is a link to the Document I have sumerised here. www.un.org/en/about-us/universal-declaration-of-human-rights So now you know what rights there are. I would encourage many of the people in the coments to pay particular attention to to numbers 10, 11 and 12 (just sayin)

@@JasonBrossa Any two rights that are not the same are automatically at conflict which each other and you are reading into them too literally. The implication of those two are that to act morally a nation should take care of the less fortunate when reasonably possible. In the context of our world they make perfect sense and human rights are fundamentally a contract between states about the treatment of people. In our world we have states and they have power by the simple virtue of existing just as money has power. Human rights interfere in how that power shall be used. No slavery is required because humans inherently give power to states by their free will or by the nature of power dynamics whichever you want to believe.

@Julio Cesar yeah, that's by far the most hardest drop of them all, almost like the chorus of this song. I don't see any viable explanation as of why so many schools often prioritize this to be inside their school curriculum. p.s Agreed
@Blue-pk4ny
@Blue-pk4ny 3 жыл бұрын
@Julio Cesar Aye, schools are really vague about what's worth teaching the kids when it comes to these sensitive subjects. I'll be turning 15 soon and I had to watch some KZbin videos just to learn how to use a condom. (Not that l'm actually sexually active, but as some just-in-case knowledge). The school's tactic of this "We have too many humans but teens aren't ready for decisions and explanations." Is pretty flawed. 90% of the people who graduate school will at least have families of their own, so it's only necessity to properly teach them how to become good parents. And getting kids can honestly happen to anybody regardless of wealth or job status. But If they're choosing to actually stick with that mentality. School's should've taught this in developing countries because that's where all the birth rates are rising in. Or fck it. If they want to slow population boom so badly then why not tell children to never have sex entirely.

Most things are important based on what job you want when you grow up, plus if kids don’t learn this stuff, then the world will never get more innovative. But I do agree that some of the stuff you mentioned about being a basic adult should definitely be taught.
@qwertyasdf4081
@qwertyasdf4081 6 ай бұрын
The stuff about being a basic adult is absolutely taught lmao. Most schools offer Home Economics and such. Also learning “useless” knowledge is still incredibly useful because it teaches you how to learn, which is a skill in and of itself. I wrote another reply to someone else that I’m going to paste her because it addresses a lot of this: “Same here. Then I grew up and realized he’s so wrong about everything lmao. Most schools do teach what he is complaining about, classes like Current Events and Home Economics are incredibly common. Financial Literacy is often taught as well, I learned it and I went to a small and underfunded public school. I was absolutely taught “what laws there are” as well. Not to mention that the main purpose of school isn’t the information that it gives you, like Boyinaband seems to think, it’s the experience, work ethic, self-application, socialization, routine, etcetera. School prepares you for real life in that way. Sure, will you really need the quadratic equation when you grow up? Probably not. But knowing how to learn a foreign and intangible concept is absolutely a skill you will use. Sorry for the rant, I just really hate when people have this specific complaint about the schooling system. It has its faults, but not this.”

Don't get angry and spout insults that is the quickest way to shut down debate. I get where you're coming from, but I have to disagree. If you taught parental skills on a basic level it would help immensely. The state already has a monopoly on education. The only way to get it back, is to educate the population into understanding they have a vote and how to use it. We do not live in a dictatorship yet, you can go to every town hall meeting and discuss the curriculum and how you would like it to change. The state should be teaching personal responsibility. They should also be teaching the basic of child rearing. You do not need to teach people how to raise their children politically, only to communicate and how to do that. Changing diapers, what milestones and age they should be at, how to play with them to encourage development, how much you should be spending on average, the health benefits of breastfeeding, exc. I see absolutely no problems in teaching basic child rearing. If you're worried about tyrants having control over education, you should be worried about that when they first created public schooling. I think putting control of education into the hands of the student would only help with that. After all, right now all they learn is what the state dictates. They have very little control over what they learn, and if they do it would eat up all the free time they could spend on their Hobbies.

@@benjaminparent4115 Well, they could at least show the different psychological effects different parenting methods have on children. Those are facts, and they don’t actually tell you directly how to parent, just what to expect if you parent a certain way. @pink3puppy
@pink3puppy 3 жыл бұрын
@@benjaminparent4115 I also don't agree that children aren't smart enough to realize what they will need for the future. Try to remember what it was like being at that age. There is nothing wrong with a basic education on child rearing. Majority of the population are parents, not necessarily good parents but parents nonetheless. It is a vital skill and one that needs to be taught. It is a very rare individual that does not want or cannot have kids. I'm not saying to force those people into a child care class I'm saying more options would be beneficial. Children should absolutely get to choose what they learn. they are not stupid. Forcing children into subjects that they do not enjoy will not force them to learn it will only force them to memorize and comply.
@pink3puppy
@pink3puppy 3 жыл бұрын
@@benjaminparent4115 how do you expect to teach critical thinking and self-sufficiency when they are not allowed to choose their courses? If you cannot trust them to go to the bathroom by themselves, how can they even be trusted to explore a career? There's nothing wrong with tunnel vision. It just means that you excel in a certain area. There is no point in forcing a student who has no interest in art to pursue it. It is a waste of their time. There is no point in telling students what they should learn. If they are not interested in a subject they will not absorb it. You can disagree that child rearing is not important all you want. The basic fact is if you do not teach children to parent, they will always be children. The quickest way to allow your children to grow up is to treat them like adults. It is extraordinarily patronizing to them when you tell them what to do. You imply that they have no agency or intelligence and that is insulting. Do you see how quickly the conversation with them breaks down when you are coming at a position above them? I understand talking down to a 3-year-old. That should stop by age 12. You're an absolutely no position above them after 12 years old. The teachers should stop acting like Lords and more like public servants. They should serve our children the knowledge that they want to have. There is no reason why children should not pursue what most interests them. Self-taught learning is a very real, and very effective method. Imagine if you could, a school system in which a student is allowed to take control of their learning. How much specialization would you see in the workforce? Everyone seems to want the same thing but they disagree about how to get there. You say you want more problem solving. You don't get that with a memorization curriculum. You get that by giving them problems to solve. They should face immense but controlled problems in the school system. How to manage a schedule. How to choose what courses are best for them. How to arrange their day in the way that benefits both social lives and their sleep. You say you want problem solvers, but the system that you promote only gives us drones. And they are pissed as they have every right to be because we have failed them on every level educationally. Why do you think homeschool children and private school children do so much better in society? Could it be because they actually have a bit of ownership over their learning? Could it be that they're not jammed into a dictatorship of teacher versus student? You want one thing, but support the thing that gives you the same results. Please reconsider.

Don't care what anyone has to say about this guy's personal and private life, I made the mistake to read some of the top comments and it just shows how F'ed we are as a people, That anyone can make a claim and its taken as gosspile, Maybe i should say some of your favourite YT's touched me in a bad way, Maybe i should point fingers at people who are not perfect and shine a huge light on them and show how f'ed up they are, Maybe i should take everything you like or care about and rip it to peices by showing you every reason why its not.. Ooooh it'd be so f'ing simple.. But you know what ? IDGF This song still hits home, It's still relevent even if you don't like the artist, Or choose to believe rando's who say he did bad things, But no one can denie that this song actually helpped people and that was actually its intention. It not about who said it, Its about it being said when it needed to be, F anyone who has a perfect made up world were they can pretend a lie to themselves that there idol's are completely without fualt, Who have never done shaddy shit in there lives, News flash they all have. Every single YT, Actor, Actress, Singer, Song writer, Author's, You parents, EVERYONE has done shit that they can't take back, Done something they knew was wrong but did it anyway, Hell i know i have, I garantee each person who wrote something here has, Does that mean you should be demonized ? Never trusted again ? That all you've done even the good should be destroyed just because you did bad things ? Should we forget the good you've done and only focus on the bad ? Get a life, Better yet get a f'ing clue first, No ones perfect, No one can be good all the time 24/7, But that don't mean you don't have feelings, Or that the bad you've done should overshadow the good you've done, Everyone knew this guy had problems, Why ? Because he told us he did, I'm not saying don't believe the rumors or whatever, I'm saying it does not change what message was in this song and that it was a good message to give, He affected change, Any of you done that ? Oh forgot you can only judge not create, To afraid to put yourself out there bare for the world to see because god forbid your not an angel 24/7 the world will turn against you and make even the good things you did seem like it was motive to do bad things.. That the message you think is fair to judge you by ? If not its not right to judge anyone by that same means. Like him, Don't like him, I don't know him, But i don't agree with anyone who harms children, Hurts or mistreats animals, Or hurt women in that order, Those people are scum, But i wont let rumor's and rando's make my mind up, I am in no place to judge anyone on the shit they do and i garantee none of you are either. Leave the guy alone, Judge the song for what it is like it hate it, That's up to you, But you don't have any right to judge someone that you don't even know, Its strange to type this, But contex matters.. If i said i hit a girl, You'd all think well he's an evil abusive asshole, But if i said i hit a girl fighting for my life to get a knife out of her hand you'd see things differently, We only know parts of a story, That is very incomplete also stuff i've seen is doubious

So child grooming is okay? That is still child grooming. He was grooming her since she was 14. And him grooming a girl once means he will do it again. Sexual abusers don't commit abuse just once. They have a very high chance of re-offending. If Dave groomed a underage girl once, he's likely to have done it again. The allegations are more likely with him being proven of grooming an underage girl once. Give up on your ridiculous parasocial relationship with Boyinaband. No one's "hating" him, he's an abuser. Bad human beings don't deserve to be liked or remembered.
