@@ChevyChase301 After the decisive Battle of Mohacs, Charles knew he couldn’t face Suleiman on land head on. But he was forced to face him when Suleimam marched to Vienna a second time yet both because he was slow to raise an army and Suleiman wasted his time on Güns the only chance for them to have a personal battle was lost. Charles failed on his African and Mediterraen campaigns while Suleiman failed in Italy and German lands seperately. Both wasted a lot of resources gaining not much and died without achieving their ambitions but ruining each other’s careers lol.

Charles got all of these realms and with the exception of hungary kept it all together. He went into massive debt to fight off enemies and expand influence, which is what a ruler is supposed to do. So over all very respectable ruler just not the equal of the emperors you'd have to compare him too (Charlemagne/ Napoleon). As for the reformation and colonialism, those always struck me as things that happened and not something he could have really done much about.

The reformation would have happend regardles yes. But could it have been dealt with differently? Could the massive bloodshed inside the empire be avoided? Much more interesting questions, and I think the questions Charles V agonized over in his late life.

​@@dakapo8985 The real indispensible man that explains how the way the reformation happened I think was Martin Luther. Without him, the late medieval church's decline as a political and spiritual institution would have resulted in several national churches that more and more became independent from it. It was Luther's uncannily intuitive use of the (not that) new information technology of the printing press that allowed his ideas to spread so quickly, he was erudite and rational while being entertaining and accesible to the "general public", something he kind of help come into existence because while literacy was raising, it was mostly a utilitarian skill (reading the Bible or double entry bookeeping) but reading for entertainment or for self-edification came about with the pamphlet industry that Luther kickstarted. In a way Charles could have acted differently mostly on how to deal With Luther. So if Luther is the key the question revolves around how to deal with him but this again presents us with the limits of Charles as emperor of the HRO (eand every other Holy Roman Emperor). Do you kill him? No, he is under the direct protection of Frederick the Wise (good nove that's why they'll call you "the wise") and you won't risk more conflict within the empire. Do you restrict the use of the printing pess on the empire? Well, see that would help but, how would go about doing that? The HRE doesn't have a single printing center like London in England. The industry is scattered so you can't quickly control what happens if printers want to go rogue. Moreover printers are status symbols for some princes so you also risk alienating them if you prohibit them from having one. So you can't stop this wave of text telling people "hey did you know ypu're getting scammed and your father's soul didn't actually get less years in purgatory?" or "hey you can actually have a cheaper church because nothing in the Bible says anything about paying to a Catholic Church in Rome?" or "here is the actual way to save your inmortal soul acording to the true word of God" or whatever appealed to the many kinds of literate and people who went to listen to tracts throughout the empire. That's my interpretation of the events there. Now as for the Peasants Revolt (the actual bloodshed), I mean. historians still argue if it was caused by the religious ideas of the reformation or if the reformation merely gave an identity to their longstanding discontents. I think it was mostly the second but the reformation did bring this Catholic vs Reformed outlook that made violence worse and in some sense counterproductive to the paesants goals because instead of looking at their situation as the result of being oppresed by a higher class (their feudal lords) they saw it mostly on religious terms which pitted them against their fellow (but Catholic) paesants.

What if the Habsburgs never reigned in Spain? Can be if: 1. Juan de Trastamara didn't die young, 2. Manuel of Portugal, inherited all kingdoms, or 3. Juana, mother of Charles was made Queen and never married a foreign family, making her the ruling Queen as was tradition in Spain for women to inherit kingdoms and be crowned on their own to extend the family.

Hey Spectrum... maybe for the next video you do a list of Rulers from worst to be, you should do Scotland... From Kenneth I, to James VI, there were 42 rulers... while after Kenneth I up to Malcolm II ( with the exception of Constantine II, there are some records of him) there are very few historical records, that still leaves more than 25 rulers to list, and I think it can be a great video idea, since you've done England and Great Britain... why not do Scotland as well... Or maybe a Scandinavian Monarchy, but that might be a bit difficult for Norway since after Olav IV, it had been under the rule of either Denmark or Sweden for more than 500 years... And not to mention how Norway's Succession worked where every son whether legitimate or not, had an equal claim for the Norwegian throne, with plunged the kingdoms into many civil wars and rival kings for over a century... so maybe put Norway off for now.... Just an idea, since your lists on European rulers from worst to best are my favorite videos to see on your channel...
