Fun fact about why the Habsburgs managed to collect that much land in the early years. They simply did not join the Crusades. Many lords around them died because they went on Crusade. This meant that their lands were left without a ruler and the Habsburgs could simply collect them. They realised the importance of: Stayin' alive...

That doesn't seem true because the crusades ended in 1291 with the fall of Acre and Rudolf "The Founder" was born in 1339. Besides, most of the crusading forces were from areas on the other side of Bavaria/Bohemia from Austria and so they were safe from the Habsburgs.

To be fair Habsburgs domains also for afew years also included England and its domains since Philips marriage to Mary lead to an act mirroring Marys titles onto Philip and Philip was naturally able to assert much influence over the adminsitation and court considering his power and reputation from other realms.

Phenomenal video, loving this format very much. Would love to see more of the same for other obscure dynasties that rose from minor dukes and counts of the HRE into powerful domains, like the Hohenzollerns, di Medici, de Savoie or the Wittelsbachs. Keep it up Spectrum! Edit: Just before I get "um, actually'd" I know the Medici didn't start off as landed nobles, they were patricians from the Republic of Firenze. But they did practically dominate Europe and eventually became Grand Dukes of Tuscany, so they count in my book :D

10:35 yoooooo favorite history youtuber talking about favorite obscure European monarch I could cry Yeah Ladislaus the Posthumous lived a slightly tragic life, born immediately into a war of succession as the Polish King Wladyslaw III, Ladislaus was given to Frederick III for protection from both Wladyslaw's army (featuring a certain John Hunyadi) and the Ottoman's, threatening expansion to Europe. Being forcefully held in Frederick's court for 12 years, Ladisluas returned to a Hungary still divided, but largely quelled the division by forigiving those who supported Wladyslaw against him, even making Hunyadi the captain general of Hungary after he fought against his succession. With his regent curtailing his diplomatic abilities as Duke of Austria, Ladislaus had to deal with his best general (Hunyadi) dying immediately after the Siege of Belgrade, Hunyadi's son (also named Ladislaus) murdering the man who took his place, and being held captive by said son in Hungary. Ladislaus then succeeded in having the younger Hunyadi executed whilst keeping his brother, Matthias, captive. Having finally come somewhat close to consolidating his position over Hungary (brewing civil war with Matthias's supporters notwithstanding) Ladislaus responded by dying of either the plague or leukemia, and being succeeded almost immediately by said man he held captive, fun life.

Charles IV rejected Rudolf IV's title of Archduke and Rudolf's younger brothers did not refer to themselves as such in charters. It was not until the accession of Frederick III to the Imperial throne that the status was confirmed. The Privilegium Maius was Rudolf's attempt to heighten his prestige since Rudolf seemed to have a rather manic obsession to match Charles IV's immense power after he was denied electoral status by Charles in the Golden Bull of 1356.

Im surprised how much Game of Thrones and Medevial Euorpean history have in common, and I dont mean the obvious like historical influences, but more so how the society around them. I guess a good example would be how important family lines are in both history and Asoiaf, like how the Lannisters and the Habsburgs slowly build their empires over time. Not only that ,but the constant infighting, and wars are also common ie The One true King vs R*nly, and the trifecta battle between the inbreds.

The video doesn't mention that Albert II expanded the Hapsburg domains by marrying Joanna the reigning countess of Pfirt and that she helped negotiate with the House of Luxembourg. The county of Tyrol was purchased by the Hapsburg from Countess Margaret in 1363.
