He’s so layered. Composition, storytelling, singing, rapping, beatboxing, guitar, vocal and facial expression, acting etc He shows an amazing understanding of acoustics. He plans to an unbelievable level of detail. It’s all paced out so carefully and yet it still feels very natural and unspoiled. There seems to be hidden meaning in almost everything. I’ve watch this so many times and I’m still finding something new. For example, I only just twigged that two zero zero five is not the postcode of London city (where I live postcodes are a series of 4 numbers). He’s actually foreshadowing the twist to the story. Sure there are many fantastic artist’s out there, some do different things even better than Ren; but no one person does it all. Btw: How spot on we’re his parents when they named him Ren! He is the literal definition of a renaissance man.
@Phazetic99
@Phazetic99 Жыл бұрын
@@fibienn250 the two zero zero five was a clue. The tale of Jenny and the tale of Screech were both released in 2019. They were twins and we know Screech was a boy of 14 years old. 2019 minus 14 puts the year at 2005. Like a great detective whodunnit, the clues were all there. But to put them altogether the first time watching is tricky. =)

For violets tale they took 20 takes and ended up with 6 or 7 full live takes to choose from. This one they chose was take #2. Ren did all the sound mixing on these videos as well. He said the sound mixing took a long time to get right on violets tail since each room and hallway had different acoustics.

I've heard this song about 20 times and I'm amazed that I still pick up on new things every time I hear it. "London City, far from pretty, 2-0-0-5" I had been assuming that number was a postal code, but I just realized it's the year. It was foreshadowing the first 2 songs, because Jenny and Screech were 14 years old. 2005 + 14 = 2019. That's right around when the Tale of Jenny Screech was released.

You did an excellent reaction to this tale of tragedy. I got chills at the foreshadowing of his "crazy eyes" at the beginning of Violet's Tale. What I saw was him saying, "This is insane! How can this exist?! How can this be allowed to happen?!" The "this" of course is generational violence & trauma. He's pointing & saying, "Don't you see this?!"
@kennethmichael5404
@kennethmichael5404 Жыл бұрын
As soon as you said "y'all didn't tell me it was sad bro...", my first thought was, Oh man, he has NO idea yet. Loved your visceral reactions throughout.....it hit you. (Like it did me) For "Screech's Tale", it seems that almost no one catches that Screech's girlfriend and his friend Patrick, happen to be "busy", or not available, at the same time. Consider why. Maybe they were together? Patrick wasn't home...was he with Screech's girl at her place and that's why she was "busy"? It adds a whole other layer to the story. Also consider that Jenny and Screech were born side by side, and essentially died side by side, one street apart. Born on the same day (2005), died on the same day (2019). An entire family, mother and twins that never knew each other, wiped out by a cycle of violence. An abused mother, a 14 year old prostitute, and a 14 year old thug/murderer. Powerful stuff. Not sure if you caught it or not, but he did all 3 songs in a single take each, just like "Hi Ren". In the "Violet's Tale", the way he uses the acoustics of his environment to accentuate the song is absolute brilliance. Did you catch how he rewound time with his guitar? The man is truly special.

I never had the thought of jenny being a prostitute.
@brandonS0001
@brandonS0001 Жыл бұрын
Nowhere in the song does it say Jenny was prostitute. She was dragging her feet from a long day at work, she went that way a 1000 times before because she probably had to walk from work to home, and just because she had heels does not mean she was a prostitute. Her wanting to escape is entirely understandable just by knowing she was a poor kid in the system going to work after school. No need to speculate and invent more tragedy as nothing said confirms it or suggests it.

@@brandonS0001 Jenny a prostitute? Well it’s debatable. Ren’s choice of words can suggest she was. And it was based on a real article/story about the murder on a young prostitute. She walked the floor… floor as in the street was her work-floor? Prostitutes are also called streetwalkers. What kind of work did she do with high heels on? If she was a waitress or had another job she would have warn easy shoes no high heels, I suppose. She dragged her feet, she was tired because she did walk all evening long or stand all night long? She wanted to escape? The hood or the profession? Can you blame? No, you can’t, maybe she was forced into prostitution due to her living conditions or circumstances. Jenny felt scared when she walked that night and not the other nights. Why? Because she knew the streets, she knew the safe places, maybe because it was her work territory? The only one who knows the answer to all of this is Ren himself. And he wants us, listeners, to interpret his songs/works as we want or comprehend.

Generational cycles of violence and trauma. Jenny (frozen like a statue in high-heeled shoes) reacted much like her mother Violet (she stays silent.) Screech is abusive and aggressive like his father Stevie. Those cycles continued even though the twins didn't know their parents. The saddest thing is that this isn't some crazy made up fairy tale. It happens everyday.

I keep coming back to watch your reaction to this. It's obvious how much you feel the story as it evolves and your reaction is just so genuine. It's how I (and I'm sure the majority of people) feel at the end, speechless and forever affected. ❤

Absolute best reaction I've seen to this track. Jay doesn't just listen, he invests himself in the story. He really feels it.

Jay, you could react to this 20 times and get 20 different reactions. Each time you watch this, you'll notice something new. A new element to the story, a new clue, a subtle hint, the tiniest of facial expressions, new questions about the characters, more lore, more notes on the guitar, more tones in Ren's voice .... Just absolutely unreal

I love watching reactions to these songs. I always like watching dude's face when he gets to the knocking part of Violet's tale. It gives me hope for humanity, because pretty much every guy gets REAL quiet during that part. The vast majority are like you, mean mugging. We all get mad. We don't like what we're hearing. Which is also a testament to Ren's performance, he invokes an emotion to his listeners... Which is the purest form of art.

This British guy is by far one of the most talented people to come out of Britain in quite some time. I hear so many influences in his music. 50s American Blues, Spaniard Blues, Reggae, Punk Rock, hip hop. Ren is a future prodigy

I'm choking on my laughter trying to stay quiet right now haha... I had the same reaction the first time I heard this. Ren's a fucking performer and it doesn't matter how many times you watch The Tale of Jenny and Screech, it's never easy to watch. The first time, even less so, because you have no idea what's coming. I loved that you caught the emphasis on "it's such a shame," because yes.... that's the point. Completely senseless violence resulting in the loss of two 14-year-old lives. It was clear that you really felt for all characters involved, and I appreciated that very much. I'm pretty certain Ren said the inspiration for this was a news story in London in which a 14-year-old killed a prostitute and then was shot to death by police (which, in the song, it's implied Jenny is a prostitute, even at 14... she's walking around late at night in heels, wanting to escape her life) and the absurdity of the violence disturbed him. That said, the triptych itself is about the cyclical nature of domestic violence, I think. Jenny was silent and afraid like her mom, and Screech was violent and unrestrained like his dad. Their dad killed their mom, and then Screech killed his sister. "History repeats itself" indeed.

We need to see these stories again and again, to relive the pain of knowing real people are experiencing things like this. To relate. To connect. To grieve.
