We're reacting to Madonna's incredible performance of Like A Prayer, Beautiful Game, and Hallelujah at Met Gala (2018). Honestly, we were absolutely speechless throughout most of this. Completely mesmerized!

one of her best performances ever! Her raw and bit crispy voice here is just amazing. In Halleluja i always gets emotional aswell as her lower voice is perfect for this. Only Madonna put on a show on the MET Gala like this, she is unique❤

Hiya. This performance is so powerful and it literally takes my breath away. I am a sobbing mess every time I watch this. Her outfit was designed by Jean Paul Gaultier as well as the black dress she wore when she arrived at the Met Gala with him to walk up the stairs. People were stunned and crying and speechless as she performed this. This is haunting and shows the incredible spirit and joy she has while performing for a crowd. She was 60 years old here and still on top of the game. No one else could have done this and pulled it off so flawlessly and emotionally and spiritually. One of a kind and we are not worthy of her presence. The Celebration Tour kicks off tonight in London!!! So jealous that you guys have tickets😢. You are in for an unforgettable experience and she is gonna show all those assholes giving her crap because of her age etc(blahblahblah) what a 65 year old legend can do. I live in South Africa so my chances of seeing this amazing woman live is zero. Great reaction.j

The theme of the 2018 Gala and the accompanying exhibition was Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination. It was a theme tailor made for Madonna. Very cool that the organizers recognized that and chose her as the featured performer that year. I've a feeling she enjoyed the irony of delivering the line "because your worlds obsessed with fame" to the celebrity audience gathered at the Met 😊 Also, a side note, about Anna Wintour, the supreme leader of the Met Gala. When she took over as editor in chief of American Vogue in 1988, the magazine had traditionally featured fashion models on the cover pretty exclusively. Wintour quickly changed that formula and Madonna was one of, if not the, first non-model celebrity chosen to be featured on the cover, just a few months after Wintour took the helm.

My all-time Favorite rendition of Hallelujah. She did this when her Madame X album was just being released, and that Dark Ballet song was from that. A lot of people didn't like the album. I personally think it's one of her best albums. It was better than anything else that was out at the time. That album was the only music I listened to for over 2 years.

Madonna always strives for the most powerful outcome, and as much as some come down on her, she truly tries to do good with her work, everything means something and every song she writes is all about her journey and how she feels, the song that really says all you need to know about her is Drowned World/Substitute For Love, when yall watch that, you will realize how much of herself she puts into her work and from then on out, you will listen in a totally different way.. thanks for letting me go on this journey with you both, I love that you get her, and always remember, Madonna is the Queen !!! 👑

Madonna's raspiness in this performance conveys anger and sadness so well. And when she sounds clear it's such a hopeful feeling. Such a soothing performance. She is healing the world. It's her destiny. She named it in American Bandstand when she said next on her list was to rule the world. So deserving of the part.

Love your reactions. This is simply one of the greatest pieces of artistic representation we have seen in our lifetime. She is a true "artist" in every sense but has never been given the credit she deserves. The focus was always the headline, appearance & her voice. No her voice is not comparable to Whitney or Celine but by god can she deliver a tune. Especially the lower range. ❤

The live audience, a bit raucous, of invited-only guests of the “glitterati” (influential people from the entertainment industry, high fashion, politics, business, etc.) at this 2018 Met Gala event were expecting a rocking/dance number from Madonna but she took them “to church” instead as Emily observed. She was nearing age 60 here and it’s hard not to think that in this performance she looked back at the past 40 years of her life and career, reflect on her own mortality, and that her spiritual journey, struggles and advocacy for tolerance, compassion for those marginalized, discriminated, for racial equality/justice, for female empowerment, for the orphans, the poor, the sick is nearing the end, and that it has always been about her Christian faith-“…I hear you call my name, and it feels like home..” (from LAP). There is a realization here, that despite what her detractors say, Madonna is walking on the right side of history with her advocacy and activism. There’s no other pop music artist today or from the past that can deliver this powerful spiritual message with such conviction and history as Madonna. This was a masterpiece performance that as one music critic said..”30 years later, Like A Prayer earned its rightful place in a museum..” a reminder that her acclaimed 1995 music video of Bedtime Story ended up in the permanent collection display at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. Following the Catholicism-inspired theme for this event, Madonna masterfully gave it a medieval Gothic feel (evoking the opening of her 2012 MDNA tour) with a choir of monks singing verses from LAP like a Gregorian chant, with flashes/imagery of pre and Italian Renaissance religious art/paintings, knight armory-all from the Met collection-and her fashion with her left arm and shoulder armor evoking that of St Joan of Arc, one of the historical heroines that inspired her-the other was the Hebrew bible’s Judith who slew/beheaded the Assyrian general Holofernes, usually depicted in art with her holding his head (a Met painting of this was flashed in this performance/video). Madonna also took the name of Esther,(an Old Testament Jewish queen/heroine who saved her people from being massacred in Persia), when she became a devotee of Kabbalah. Madonna premiered Dark Ballet here as the second song after LAP. It was inspired by Joan of Arc. Until this event, the public has not heard this song before as it has yet to be released with her 2019 Madame X album (just like when she performed the unreleased Like A Virgin in the 1984 MTV VMAs), the media mistakenly named it Beautiful Game after its opening lyrics. Finally, she covered Leonard Cohen’s (died 2016 age 82) 1984 masterpiece-Hallelujah-a haunting lament about lost love, of mourning, guilt, penance, of finding reconciliation and peace, an anthem played at funerals and poignant occasions that manages to comfort and inspire those who are broken-hearted and in despair. I always tear up with this song as Madonna slowly walks, leading a procession of monks, muses, religious pastors that evoked of Catholic clergy and Baptist ministers like the Rev. Martin Luther King that led and participated in protest marches during the Civil Rights era in the 60s; with her head and gaze towards a bright light and a cross with flashing art/images of the Annunciation and Christ’s crucifixion. There is a recurring theme here of the beginning and the end. Her white medieval gown is significant-as white vestments are used in Catholic liturgical worship of Jesus and Mary during Christmas and Easter and during funeral rites. White is also associated with the Virgin Mary, Queen of Angels, of Martyrs. As one with a Catholic background, this performance and artistry resonated with me deeply. It makes me examine my own life’s journey. Madonna touched all the bases here. Thank you for your beautiful reaction.❤

Thanks for reacting to this. I had forgotten how great this was and how amazing she sounded here when I first watched it. Some interesting tidbits.... Met Gala is known to do performances, but this is the first time one was filmed and released to the public. Obviously more production was added to the final performance. As you noticed, they actually relied on crowd footage from people's phones, etc. Madonna had someone there filming aspects of it as well, but then put it all together later. As for "Beautiful Game", it eventually became 'DARK BALLET' (which takes you to whole new level with the song) from. her 2019 Madame X album. There's a video for that song which portrays a gay man playing the part of Joan of Arc and being burned to the stake. Very powerful song and visuals from that song and video. Hope you'll be able to check it out and react to it soon. Though it may be some time since you are reacting to her catalog chronologically which is great as well. Love your reactions. You guys are once again so genuine and appreciative in what you are experiencing.

Hey Emily and Brenda! (omg, I realized I forgot to add your names here... :D) Just recently found your channel and Madonna reactions. Very inspiring and intelligent - good job! This one thing that I wished to add to your analyses, thoughts and observations on Madonna, is that, she doesn´t consider herself as a singer, a pop star etc. First and foremost she approaches her live performances as a performance artist. This is very important to understand about her. Before her "The Girlie Show" World Tour in 1993 she told her choreography partners that she wants every movement to have a meaning. And while watching those performances you clearly see that she just doesn´t perform the songs, she tells a story with every song, every move, every gesture. She is art (as she jokingly has said about herself ;) Keep going on getting to know Madonna and the genius of her art

I have mixed feelings about her voice here, at some points it’s nice and mostly it’s rough, you can hear the toll her wine drinking and pot smoking,as well as age, has taken in her voice.During this period you couldn’t look at her Instagram without seeing her smoking pot with her 25yr old boyfriend and always drinking wine. I hope her voice is better on tour.
