I get really good groups with a Tikka T3X Lite Stainless. I zeroed my rifle using the Nosler 90 grain Ballistic Tip and this ends up about 1/2-3/4 MOA down and 1/2-3/4 MOA right from the Nosler. The Nosler is my main ammo but I bought a couple boxes to see how this shoots as I got back into hunting this year and my dad still has cases of the Remington Core Lokt from the early 90s or they might be from the 80s. I also bought a box of Federal Fusion to try in my 243 based on your videos. The 2 Does I shot this year only went 30-40 yards with the Nosler and both were shot in the vitals. The Nosler is basically my base line ammunition at this point.

I disagree with the 20" barrel being ideal for the .243. The fact that the overbored cartridge LOSES so much velocity with a shorter barrel....that's the very reason why a longer barrel is optimal in it. Whereas, since the .308 doesn't loose much velocity by chopping the barrel down, that means it's the perfect choice for a carbine(since you don't give up much velocity and energy).
@nathanbailey91537 ай бұрын
I agree with you. The .243 needs at least a 22" barrel, and it doesn't make it any more cumbersome. I think if you want a short barrel carbine, you need to go with something made for it - like .30-30, .35 Rem, etc. Something not over-bore

Good video, but one point - I don't think your bolt-action is a 'carbine', despite being compact.

All Remington has done is to bring back from the dead the bronze points minus the bronze part. They simply replaced the bronze part with plastic. I used to use the 130 grain bronze points in my son's 270 with astounding success back in 97-98 deer season. 🦌 3 deer seasons back, a very fat axis buck was staring over one of my fences at my food plot of winter wheat trying to decide when he was ready to jump the damn fence at 184 yards, and I ran out of patience and plugged him smak dab through the middle of his ribs and he hit the dirt hard, and never even kicked! That 100 grain winchester power point poked a hole clean through. Being 234 pounds on the hoof I decided right quick to use the winchester hundred grain power points from then on in my beloved Howa 243 cerakote camouflage stock. This gun is a one in a million, because it will poke all three rounds into a single jagged hole and it doesn't matter if it's a Remington core lok or winchester power point 100gr.

I've had a .243 win since 1982. The cartridge never let me down. From groundhog to deer to factory class sporter/varmint matches is a very accurate round. Barrels of less than 22"is a waste of components. Muzzle blast is all you gain. Same can be said for the 25-06. Manufacturers have wrapped on .243's,.25-06 by not giving the faster twist barrels. So instead of buying a new Bandwagon cartridges (creedmoores, PRC's) put a new barrel on with faster twists. My guess is you'll be just as happy. If your not shooting matches ,over bore means nothing. They will outlast you just hunting deer.

Had a 243. Nothing bad, really, to say about it, but I was never satisfied with it. I did discover while I had it, that I'm really a "big bore" person. So it was a worthwhile time.

Still not sure how I feel about 243. I thought it would be a good choice for when I was headed out to bag a doe for the freezer. Wanted something that didnt blast quite such a big hole through what might be a smaller animal. I have had 3 deer down so far but with no exits on 100ish pound deer and a little tracking. What are you seeing?

I would try federal fusion or plain core lokt(not tipped). I couldn't find plain core lokt. Shot 2 does with tipped, recovered both, very unimpressed. Blood trails very minimum, inside the deer was all the damage. We tried the deer season xp and they were about the same. Extreme internal trauma, small entrance with no exit. We r going to try the barnes and just punch the shoulders unless our original core lokt pops back up.

243 was optimized for a 24” barrel. 20” is simply too short given the powder capacity of the 243. Using a 20” barrel for it will lead to accelerated barrel and barrel throat wear. Not recommended.

Corelokt ammunition around in Louisiana is THE ammo. I know out of my 270win it loves the stuff. I will tell this the corlokt tipped in my 270 is shooting hot. The recoil and report is significant more than other factory loads.

@Simon-talks Жыл бұрын
all ammo company velocities are quite a bit slower than they advertised. Companies have most of the gun community fooled about various cartridge speeds...
@kirkboswell2575 Жыл бұрын
@@Simon-talks- No. Actually the ammo companies will usually have a 26 inch barrel for their testing. Take off 50 fps per inch less, and you will have a realistic expectation (modern powders. Old powders, 75 fps). This doesn't make printed figures "lies", but rather a valuable reference point.
@Simon-talks Жыл бұрын
No, it makes them blatant lies. They know that the average hunter who needs to grab a box of ammo is not a ballistic scientist, and they are deliberately misleading them in order to get their money.
@kirkboswell2575 Жыл бұрын
@Simon-talks - No, not lies. You know, for several years the ammo companies stopped putting velocity numbers on the boxes because of complaints like yours. A whole bunch of people complained, like me, until they started putting them back on. You need a standard starting place for everyone. That happens to be 26 inches for everyone. It doesn't take a ballistic scientist to do some basic math and subtract 50 fps per inch shorter. It's also quite handy for high performance cartridges like the 10 mm. Standard is 1200 fps with a 200 grain bullet but there's a whole lot of it loaded to 40 S&W specs, i.e. 1000 fps with a 180. Without those numbers you don't know if you are reaching for a standard load, or a "light" load. There's plenty of other similar cartridges........ Definitely not lies, but apparently some basic math is difficult for some people. For those individuals I'd say ask their hunting buddy.
@Simon-talks Жыл бұрын
@@kirkboswell2575 the companies know good and well what they are doing to mislead....they know that nobody has a 26 Inch barrel on their .308 or .243 hunting rifle, lol. And they don't make it clear in their labeling that they are using a ridiculously long barrel.....just stop. lol
