Gave up on my tractor mower last year and went with a Toro zmaster 2000 with a 52 inch deck. Cut my mowing time down from 3.5 hours to about 90 minutes. I could've went with a larger deck but I mow around A LOT of trees, close to 80 to be exact. It was my first season ever with a zero turn. It was life changing. Cannot see myself going back to tractor mowing ever again, unless of course I want to get away from the wife for awhile ;) lol

ZTRs have their place. When I was a crew manager / crew trainer at a landscape company, I would train new employees on the mowers. Most of them got the hang of it after a week or so. Only challenging to teach them was turning so you don't tear up the grass when you turn. If you have alot of grass, ZTRs are the way to go. You should do a time comparison of the three mowers to see how they mow in the same amount of space.

Delivered a nice even cut, has the super tight turning ability kzbin.infoUgkx1VWTrayKBdCKAjzAcZ_Eg4dhHTae3LkN also recommend I was looking for, and is just a blast to drive. It takes a little bit to get used to driving one after driving a normal tractor style, but once you've got it, you've got it. If you're cutting lines, you have to be careful spinning the mower around or the back tire will dig a bare spot. Just take it nice and slow during the turn and then it's back to full throttle across the yard!

Enjoy the Dixie Chopper. I used them in my commercial mowing business from 1993 through 2015. The last one that I purchased in 2006 is still running. It is powered by a Yanmar 35.5hp diesel engine and has over 3000 hours of use. My son uses it now on his 17 acres in east central Mississippi.

It would be great if you could do the comparison of your overall tractor of choice that can mow all parts of your yard and Dixie to see the actual time to mow difference and fuel consumption difference for both to complete the same job. Of course this would be once you have a good method down for the mowing with Dixie. You could also touch on comfort difference while mowing and maintenance cost/effort between the two based on recommended factory intervals. Looking forward to it. Thanks for the content!

@@hunterharrell7491 yeah but Dixie was the first most popular in my, and the surrounding states, area. When I was a kid and Dixie zero turns first came out… my dad drove us all the way to North Carolina to a Dixie dealer to demo them. 😂 Dixie exploded onto the scene around here back then with the lawn care companies. Everyone was running them. But yeah of course they were not the first but to me they are the true OGs of the zero turn world. They advertised well and built a machine that could handle the abuse better than the competition at the time.

@@hunterharrell7491 I think I figured out why Dixie chopper changed the industry in the late 80s and early 90s when my dad took me to that dealer. I did some research and found out that Dixie created the first hydraulic drive zero turn. Apparently everything else before that was like chain drive and slow and unreliable. So THATS why they were loved by the Lawncare crews so much all of a sudden. We suddenly had the speed and ability to actually make money with a zero turn now. I never really knew why Dixie became so popular so quickly but now it makes sense.

Love these videos. I gave up mowing 4 acres with my 1023e and the 54" deck after I bought a used commercial grade zero turn. The zero turn obviously mows way faster (cut my mowing time in about half), but it's a decision everyone need to make for themselves. My 4 acres has a lot of trees/bushes/fences to mow around that handicapped the tractor. I still love my 1023e, it's just not my mower anymore.

I have a 2038R with a belly mower. It is a 60" deck. I mow 3 acres and have around 5 trees I have to mow around. I do have some low areas next to a creek. The 4 wheel drive is the saving grace. When I had a zero turn it was late May to early June before it would be dry enough to mow with a zero turn. My 2038R has just a clean a cut as the Simplicity commercial-grade zero-turn I had before.

When we moved to the 'country' I bought a diesel Ford 1920 and a 6' woods rear mower. It took about 5-6 hrs to mow around the house, buildings trees, and field. Did that for 27 yrs. 4 yrs ago I bought a Ferris IS3200 72" Gas EFI. It has suspension on all 4 wheels, and seat. It cut mowing time to a little over 2 hrs. And doesn't use as much gas as I had thought it might. It holds 11 gal gas, and does the 6-7 AC with about 3-4 gal. Depending on height of grass. Very well built machine. Extreme duty blades.

Worth every penny. Don’t need the top of the line mower, but do need a good piece of equipment. The ztr is a specific piece of equipment. Make the cutting much faster and doesn’t wear on the tractor. Very pleased with my decision.

I bought a used 1997 (I think I bought in 2001 and sold with the house in 2007) Dixie Chopper with a 72" deck and two Kohler 20HP air cooled gas motors. I think they did not have mufflers but they were just more of spark arrestors because it was really loud. It had four 3 gallon gas tanks (a pair tied in to each), two keys, chokes and hour meters. Only one battery and only one motor charged it. Each motor had a centrifugal clutch on the output and then went to a central jack shaft that drove the hydro pump and the deck. I think it had four belts. At idle it would not do anything and had to throttle up to get the centrifugal clutches going. It had too much power in my opinion and I was always fiddling with the max RPMs to keep them synced so one would not drag the other down. The thing was completely bonkers. The first time I mowed with it my neighbors told me later they thought it sounded like a helicopter was landing in my yard. I'm assuming they put these two 20HP motors on it because it was cheap compared to one 40 HP gas motor. They had a 50HP Yanmar diesel available in the same era.

Barely slow down making the turns and stay in the cut all the time. They’re not so good on steep slopes if there is any moisture….I mow the ditch with it but has to be dry. Getting one stuck isn’t so fun.

I can see some learning curve going on there. When you make a 180 degree turn at the end of a strip, you really want to keep BOTH wheels turning. The inside wheel needs to go backwards and the outside wheel forwards. That will really help prevent making those tire marks in the yard. It took me almost a full season to get the hang of it.

My step dad has owned and operated a lawn care business for most of 30 years now. Of course, I was part of the help at points. We used Dixie Choppers for a long time before moving to Deere 900's. They didn't have the nice suspension at that time, so going their full speed on anything rough *hurt* my teenage back after a day on it. I loved the 72" diesel one though. I have one suggestion, which might already be in the comments somewhere. Even though it is a "zero- turn", one should still execute a 3-point turn at the end of a row. You can too easily rip up lawn from even just one time. That 3 point turn is still much much faster than a belly mower style can think of pulling off, but easier on your grass.

Hey Tim, a little food for thought here. Be careful going thru corn stalks or even downed branches. Just as you were picking up stalks off your deck, the stalks or branches can get into your belts and cause premature failure due to rubbing. The belts are usually 50-100 bucks each. If you want to grind them up, use a bush hog, its shaft powered and will chop them up.

Before we ended up with our "new to us" lawn tractor, I suggested to my dad on checking out a ZTR. The big downsides to having one where we live (out by the Morgans) are a lot of steep hills. Our one neighbor's property which we use our 1650 Cub Cadet on is not only hilly, but also rough and has a lot of trees. I find the biggest thing if someone is looking at one should consider either a mid or front mounted deck. Fronts give a better chance to use all year with various attachments (blade, broom, etc.) Should be a fun series with a ZTR and the Peco trimmer.

Always lover your videos, I even enjoyed this one even though I am not a fan of Zero turn mowers at all. What you got into with the wind blowing everything coming out the shoot right back on you, is one of my main dislikes of a zero turn. For a dedicated mower with excellent maneuverability, I would still prefer a X7 or maybe an X7 with 4 wheel drive and 4 wheel steering. I had Deere Z9 a couple years ago, only had it a few months before trading for a X758, aside from getting covered in clippings I had a heck of time with getting stuck and forget holding a ditch bank. I noticed you didn't demo Dixie on your ditch out font. Nore around your pond banks. I think that might get pretty interesting trying to mow your ditch with Dixie.

I’ve had a mid mount mower on a 2520, a beloved 345 Deere with a 54” deck, I am now for the second time going to re commit to 3pt finish mower for my Massey to try and maximize space and one less machine to maintain. You can find some very good ZTR at cheap prices if you look, I bought a Deere Z720a with less than 500 hours, for 3500 at auction from a local Deere dealer, didn’t even have paint worn off the deck and it was a great machine and what I mowed with the last two years, I sold it for 4500 bucks with less than 700 hours on it and it was still in like new condition l.

I have a number of trees and bushes, that is why I initially bought the Zero Turn. But I did find over time, the lack of back tracking can save a lot of time mowing. I went from 2+ hours on the old tractor, to about an hour with the ZT. You will also find After a bit more time in the seat, you will just automatically drive it like a pro. If you have a large straight forward or square lawn(very large) I think an enormous finish mower on a tractor would be better but, overall hard to beat the speed of the ZT.

The ground speed of the semi commercial zero turns makes them worth the investment. Our Simplicity/Ferris absolutely flies. The box store Z turns are no faster than a garden tractor.

Zero turns are fast and fun! Some are very dangerous on hills going sideways. I think some handle it fine, but not all. Think I said this before, it cut 2hrs off mowing my parents yard of 3 acres. Had a 50" I believe White GT-1855 tractor and took roughly 4 hrs, they got a Bad Boy Zero with a 60" deck and cut the time down to about 2hrs and had fun mowing as well! But was the speed and the power of engine that it just goes through anything at any speed I think is what made the difference.

I went Craftsman T310 54in to 2025r with 60D and gained little, maybe lost time. 2022 740r 60in fully Tweel’d should be quickest and smoothest. Will know this weekend 😊

Tim. Do you think a subsoiler in the low lying area would help with the wet area?

No. Soil drains beautifully here. We just need to work on the surface drainage so that the water doesn't stand there.

I stopped using my jd 2305 because every single time I’d use it it’d overheat because the radiator sucks so much grass in it’s silly! I only use the tractor for rough stuff now. Is that a string trimmer on the side?

For a comparison do a GPS speed test and then do the calculations on how long it'd take to mow x amount of yard with the width and speed. Or setup a straight away then an obstacle course and time the results tractor vs vintrack vs zero turn.

I own 15 acres of land, but only about 1/2 acre of lawn. My house and driveway takes up maybe another half acre. So an older craftsman 42 inch mower for me. Tractor is for firewood and snow removal.

Bought a 60 inch JD Ztrac 930M in 2016 and I will never mow with anything but a zero turn. I have 5 1/2 acres and can mow in a couple of hours. I have some hilly ground and never felt unstable. I do like the week trimmer option on that mower.

This is a good debate! Keep in mind on flat ground, even a 4-5,000 dollar upper level residential zero will be faster than a tractor style mower, but a commercial mower is better for hills because of the heavier weight!

Funny , I also decided to start mowing with a zero turn this year. I do 8 acres and I have to say I can cut my time in half if I push it. It's rated for 13mph but that's pretty fast.

It is about how fast you mow. A Zero Turn changes your mowing life. Ferris 52” cut, 1.5ac mowable , about an hour. Neighbors comment about how fast I mow. Now you have to become a striper!!!!! My wife likes the diagonal stripes best in the yard.

Had my zero turn first. Bought my 1025r used came with mower deck. 72in John Deere 960m mows much better than the 1025. And does corn stocks too!

Yeah, if you're doing a lot of mowing and your time is worth anything, a ZTR is a really good investment if you've got the money for both! Interestingly enough, I now work with several engineers from the previous Dixie Chopper, before they went out and Rhino bought the rights, etc.
