a little review of this 1. Subliminal extremely faithful cover of one of my favorites from TMBG. not a huge fan of how robotic the accordion sounds, but the stellar guitar and vocals make up for it entirely. i listened to this one 4 times because of how much of a banger this is! i especially love how the backwards part at the end sounds. John Henry is easily a contender for my favorite TMBG album and to an extent favorite album of all time, so the fact this is the opener makes me happy. this just blows me away. 10/10 2. You’re on Fire extremely good cover of the opener from Nanobots! i wish the drums were more prevalent but the main guitar riff here is really good. i’m also a fan of the backing vocals. it’s not nearly good as the original in my opinion, the verses are a little less vibrant. 7.5/10 3. Boss of Me not sure how to explain this one. i like it a lot, though! the verses sound absolutely perfect to me. the guitar solo arguably rocks more than the OG Boss of Me and it just sounds great! 9/10 4. Read a Book great cover, i was never that into Read a Book so it’s not necessarily my favorite, but goddamn the drums here are AMAZING. i think a cover of Money for Dope would be amazing in Shadrow’s style, but hey, this is still pretty good. 8/10 5. Can’t Keep Johnny Down this is easily my favorite so far. the vocal delivery here is perfect for the song, and i like how bouncy the bass is here. i’m not sure what else i can say here, but this song was executed amazingly. 9.5/10 6. Experimental Film okay i changed my mind, i think this is my favorite now. i absolutely love the piano in the verses, it just has that FUNK! the bassline in the bridge is so. damn. good. i love The Spine so much so this cover is just magical to me… it just sounds so much more confident than the original version and it makes me proud of Mr. Experimentalfilmdirector 10/10 7. Sensurround i’m going to be honest and say i’ve probably only heard this song once. doesn’t mean this isn’t great though! the instrumental break is probably my favorite part of this one. i forget what the original sounds like so i’m just going to pretend this is the original Sensurround. 8.5/10 8. Or So I Have Read as a proud Why? lover, i can say with complete faith that this is superb. i’m not sure if i like the original or this cover better! Why? is just an album that’s full of stupid songs made for babies that i somehow really adore. Or So I Have Read has me rolling on the floor laughing every time i listen to it. anyway, this is a quality cover! 9.5/10 9. Weep Day i don’t like how the original Weep Day is recorded with such low quality so i usually replace it with this cover every time i listen to Then: The Earlier Years or add it to a playlist. like with Sensurround, i will be pretending this is the original Weep Day. (i’m also a huge fan of Logan Whitehurst’s cover of Weep Day) 10/10 10. Man, It’s So Loud in Here i was so worried you were going to ruin this one with some god awful vocal effects that ruin so many covers of this song, but nope, it’s still good! this cover heavily reminds me of early 2010’s pop where people decided to make extremely pitch corrected electronic pop again. i’m knocking down half a point for pronouncing “they revamped the airport” oddly. (/j) bombass cover 9.5/10 11. President’s Daughter certainly an odd song to cover… 5/10 12. They Got Lost i’m giving this half a point for covering the Severe Tire Damage version!! certainly not my favorite because of how aggressive the… is it a synth? i’m not sure.. sounds. but hey, the piano sounds amazing! 8/10 13. Mr. Me my favorite from Lincoln gets done well, woo! i like how it sounds both more laid back and more chaotic at the same time. i also appreciate the superb vocals near the end like WHAT! 9.5/10 14. Courage the Cowardly Dog i’m running out of things to say about these. not my favorite but it is quite funky. (i’ve never listened to the original) 7/10 15. Particle Man ironically this is one of my least favorites from Flood. this is still a good cover, and faithful as ever, but i’m getting bored of the original so it’s just kind of meh. the weakest vocal performance so far too. 6.5/10 16. Why Did You Grow a Beard? now we’re getting back into the bops! Cast Your Pod to the Wind is one of my favorite releases from TMBG because of how unhinged and crazy it is. i love both this and the original to the Destination Moon and back! i love the bassline in this cover so much, and the vocals are delivered in a much better monotonous way than Particle Man. 9.5/10 17. Mrs. Bluebeard okay holy shit i think this is my favorite. the piano here is stellar and oh my god the synth?! oh my lord i’m about to faint oh my lord!! this further proves the idea that I Like Fun is the best TMBG album. my god i love this cover SO MUCH. the way everything comes together near the end is just **chef’s kiss**! certified Shadrow bop, congratulations my guy. 10/10 18. The Communists Have the Music great cover, but i think other songs from MMR would work better with your style. imagine Neck Rolls or Gudetama’s Busy Days like this… still great though. the communists do indeed have the music. flansy’s parts are the best parts. 8.5/10 19. She’s an Angel solid cover. i would say it’s the least unique cover in this album but that doesn’t mean it’s not a bop! i love how the bass in the verses sounds here, i think it sounds a little better than the original bass. the guitar in the pre-chorus is my favorite part of this. 9.5/10 20. See the Constellation not perfect by any means… but HOLY SHIT THIS ROCKS SO HARD. See the Constellation is one of my top 5 songs from They and this cover is so close to being as great as it. the guitar here is so crunchy and to me it just perfects this cover. 10/10 i’d rate the album as a whole 8.5/10. i think that the first 10 and last 5 are incredible, but the third fourth of the album is a little lackluster. it has some of the weirder choices from Their catalouge and they’re just meh. however, i do love the majority of these!
