You forgot to mention how dangerous is it on a single lane highway, when your trying to pass, but you can only do 2mph faster than the guy you're trying to pass. And most of these assholes realize that your speed is limited, and they still won't slow down to let you pass. Those guys end up getting the finger when I eventually get passed them. That's probably the most stressful part of the job for me.

I don't like the limiters they make me anxious on long straight roads its weird when you feel like you want to do 65-68 but the limiter cuts in at 61-62 it agitates the hell out of me. But the worst part is when you have someone slower in front and you want to pass but the guy wont let you and you end up stuck in the fast lane this can cause an accident to happen

Here in the US, speed limiters aren't mandatory, but most companies limit them on their own. Some go 62 mph, some go 68 mph, and the rest go somewhere in between. Once in a great while you'll see an independent owner going 70 (or more), but they're rare (cattle haulers mostly). Biggest nuisance is when one truck is governed at 64 mph, and the one passing it is governed at 64.2 mph. Rolling roadblock for a mile or more sometimes.

Gets worse with GPS monitored speed devices. Go over by ten mph in any area - even if you miss a sign... Do it three times, you are fired. If it is a mistake and a sign is missing or just recently changed, it is the drivers responsibility to prove it. This is already occurring in quite the number of businesses. No not patronize these businesses. It is actually GRAVELY unsafe to have such GPS speed monitoring devices. I've seen the monitored vehicles have the back of their vehicles destroyed by other vehicles. Even worse, it causes the monitored vehicles to remained glued to the gauges. The road and accident attorneys must love these devices

People are already passing a truck then hitting their brakes extremely close at the trucks front bumper because its going up a hill slower or just slower in general than everyone else, it'll probably be worse with the limiter. if a person that does that most dumbest thing on the road in my book and reading this comment you must have a death wish, do you have any idea how much weight they're pulling? I promise you, hit those brakes too hard and too close to the front of the truck you'll be part of the undercarriage of the truck, you don't believe me? look it up and I hate to say it but if you do this most stupid thing on the road in my book and a truck runs you over you had it coming.

I dont like how limiters create packs of trucks. In Florida, on 75 the speed limit is 70mph. My truck runs 73, and I can almost never drive at 73 because there will be a truck that is governed at 65 trying to pass a truck that is governed at 62 with a truck that is governed at 66 sitting in the middle lane. This lets all the trucks that can run (not that many) stack up behind them. Then add in a hundred cars that are trying to go 75 or 80 and it turns into a mess. If all the trucks could run 70 or 75 down here we could all sit in the right lane, and let the cars buzz on by

I would think driving a tractor trailer with a speed limiter would be very stressful because you can't maintain your momentum when you come to an uphill. When you start slowing down going uphill that is really frustrating. I've seen Truckers running side-by-side for miles and I would have to assume it's because the one in the passing Lane is limited and doesn't have enough momentum to complete the pass. It's got to be as frustrating for the truck driver as it is for the car that gets stuck behind him and can't get by.

As noted, the difference in speeds creates a lot of problems. There are two points I'd like to make: 1. Heavy truck tires are not rated for speeds over 75 mph. Neither are the brakes. 2. Speed (road speed, RPM, or both) limiters present an extreme danger in situations when you need all the power and torque out of the engine to *avoid* a hazardous situation. 3. Logbooks are generally scrutinized on the basis of a 60 mph average speed. This is Ok for 63 mph trucks, but those governed higher or even wide-open subject the driver to a potential violation if they aren't careful in how they log everything. Easiest solution? Govern them all to 72 mph.
@hudsondonnell444
@hudsondonnell444 7 жыл бұрын
P Kranz, that isn't the best solution. The best solution is to get the ATA, NHTSA, and the government out of the business of creating a problem and then lying about the need to do something about it.

Like your observation and agree with it. I was always frustrated when trying to pass a slower car or truck and had only 5mph left before the governed top speed only to have either the other vehicle speed up after I changed lanes or get alongside the other truck and have the wind force prevent me from getting past. Another hinderance was hitting a slope prior to completing the pass. This wouldn't have been a problem with a non-governed truck as I would have been able to get a running start to overcome the opposing forces and would have completed the pass many minutes sooner, thereby not restricting any other trailing traffic in the process.

The intermediate can do 60 mph. The rookies can do 50 mph. And Swifty Swift can do 40 mph when going forward and 1 mph when going backward.

I know I'm a little late to the discussion, but while not a truck driver I live in California. The California highway system has a 65 mile per hour speed limit for cars and a 55 mile per hour speed limit for any vehicle pulling a trailer. This 10 mile per hour difference in allowable driving speed turns trucks, through no fault of the drivers, into road hazards. I imagine that it's frustrating for the truck drivers not being allowed to drive at the speed of traffic. I know it's frustrating for the car drivers getting stuck behind or trying to merge into a group of trucks driving slower than the rest of the traffic. While I've never actually looked for statistics on it, I firmly believe that this 10 mile per hour difference in speed limits causes accidents.
@SmartTrucking
@SmartTrucking 7 жыл бұрын
I think you're with the majority on that one. Common sense dictates that slower moving vehicles are a potential hazard. Of course, common sense isn't rampant in politics. Dave

It also gives professional drivers such as yourself a difficult choice to make. Do you obey the posted speed limit, making your truck a road hazard and potentially causing an accident, or do you travel at the speed of traffic and risk a speeding ticket. Either way, you lose.

Count yourself lucky. In UK by law 90km/55mph limited. Many large companies limit to 52mph. This applies to anything over a35cwt ( don't know what your term for these is it's a sprinter type panel Van carries under two tonnes). It kind of works on motorways (freeways) but on two carriage way roads it just forms 44 ton roadblocks as one limited truck tries to crawl past another. On single carriageways anything over 7.5 ton is limited to 40mph . You can imagine the lines of frantic car drivers stuck behind trucks, they will do ANYTHING to pass a truck As a driver you get used to it, set the cruise control and just sit there, but it's stupifiyingly boring . We just can't do the milage/hrs you guys do but most of us are paid hourly Oh and diesel today cost. £1.25 per liter / £5.60 ish per imp gallon that's maybe 8 dollars Difficult with exchange rates etc but be thankfull your dollars artificially strong.

They are limited here, not owner operators. But most are. So we have the rolling roadblocks at 65 or so when one asshole tries to pass another, and neither one gives. Same thing with four wheelers, but worse. Think they're the traffic guards and everybody else should go the same speed they are, and stay behind them. Wanna go 5 or 10 under, then floor it to block you, then slow down again when they get to another slow vehicle. Everybody's just getting dumb as hell, completely self obsessed and have a chip on their shoulder always looking to unload on somebody else for absolutely no reason, other than you're in the same general area as they are. So, they're gonna make you're life as miserable as theirs is, apparently...

Stop moaning. Our lorries in the UK are limited to 56mph (90kmh). And England has the lowest amount of road deaths. Also crashes at 70 mph are rare as people tend to break. But but 20mph can be the difference between hitting something and not. And if you do hit something the velocity is severely reduced.

My saying is, if you need to govern your truck to save fuel, you shouldn't be in the business to begin with. Governed trucks are unsafe. You get 5 mile drag races, and pissed off 4 wheelers, who cut trucks off and cause accidents because of this. The company I drive for currently says to be a stone in the river, I say screw that! You cause more problems going slower, than actually going with the flow of traffic.

They should bring in a "Dead man's handle"if you will. A device , like the train drivers have to use which involves a button you have to tap every 20 - 60 seconds for example. If it isn't pressed within the time limit, an alarm will sound, and if no action is yet still taken the truck will safely brake down to a complete stop. Damn insurance adjustors should not be making legislation for trucking companies they have no knowledge of and have never driven one themselves. companies like fit these silly devices to their trucks to save a few hundred thousand dollars a year, but have no care about the delays and traffic flow problems they cause for the general public. Falling asleep at the wheel , I see as the bigger and more present problem.

My truck is limited at 66 with cruise control, and 62 without. Well my cruise control hasnt been working so I've been stuck going 62-63 and I see the major difference. Theres people merging and i cant speed up to let them on or go fast enough to move over so either they HAVE to speed up and if they choose not to i either have to slow down to around 58 or just let them run off the road. Also a lot of time theres people on the side of the road with emergencies and I just cant get over. I feel so much more anxiety and so much less safe only being able to go 62 rather than 66. Now just imagine the difference between 66mph and having no limit. From this little experience I've come to decide limiters are dangerous and give us much less freedom and much less options to make safe choices in driving

I haul fuel so I'm always at max gross but the corporate guys order these trucks as if we do LTL work or never drive on grades. Plus the engine brakes aren't as effective in that type of gearing so I sometimes have to rely on service brakes more than I like.

Most frustrating is following a road controller driving under the speed limit on secondary roads, then reaching a double lane passing area only to be stuck with a governed speed! Unable to pass, traffic gets back up and drivers get antsy and will take risks. You can find road controllers in big trucks too! Do they really think they are making the highways safer by slowing everyone down? I've had them swap lanes multiple times to block my big rig from passing!

Typical office worker making rules for the road. Maybe we should speed limit four wheelers instead of having vehicles that can reach well over a hundred miles an hour and a new driver no matter their age or experience and unregulated can buy one or rent one and hit the road causing chaos, perhaps causing a big rig to crash and the commercial driver is the one who gets blamed. There is no justice or common sense left in this world.

Richard Short, I guarantee you that if the state of Connecticut were to restrict the left lane, on I-95 from NY to New Haven, during the morning and evening rush hours, and instead mandate that commercial vehicles traveling through stay left. We would see a reduction in truck vs four wheeler accidents.

Gary ClarkII, I've been driving for my current company since April 2007. From 07 to August 09 our trucks were governed to 65 or 68, and we didn't hire anyone without four years experience and a clean record. When the son took over from the father we started hiring rookies without experience and the limiters were reigned in. I'm quite sure that the worst problem with our accident rate is the low limit not the rookie behind the wheel.

Aaron Yates, the number one reason why we have high accident and fatality rates in North America is because we rationalize the "speed kills revenue" scam and do not ask the right questions when looking for the cause of accidents. The Germans are the only rational people in the world when it comes to traffic safety and what they do there won't necessarily work here.
@timengland3649
@timengland3649 7 жыл бұрын
There have been many studies done that split speeds on the roads causes more accidents due to the increased interactions between vehicles. Speed limiters also create a death threat for a driver if he/she blows out a steer tire. I know the odds are low but the first recovery move of a blown steer is to increase speed. If a driver is maxed out on cruise control and has a blowout, recovery is going to be achieved by dumb luck or the grace of God. That's why a driver should always have a clean change of underwear in the glove box. Everything about speed limiters in the USA is WRONG! Canada has them because they are still using what we would call State Routs going thru towns on two lane roads. Europe has the same skinny road problem and from what I've gathered from the Internet, their routes are short. How long does it take to traverse England? And, what's up Australia? Don't complain about speed limiters when your trucks pull more in your truck trains than some of our locomotives. The USA built a high speed interstate to move products from point A to B and should be unfettered. I'll stop here because I could write a book on my opinion. Stay safe out there drivers.

I've been travelling by car on the 401(Ontario)/20(Quebec) between Montreal and Alexandria Bay since before speed limiters on all trucks. The speed limiters are AWFUL! Traffic is now just long clumps of cars and trucks in close proximity with open road between the clumps. There is no way clumped traffic is safer than normal (no limiters) traffic like you describe in the video. My opinion with the ATA member companies pushing for limiters on all trucks is to reduce smaller carriers' competitive advantages not having limiters. Moving freight quicker is probably not that big of an advantage. But I would think that getting out of a limited truck would be a big motivator for a driver to leave a large company for one with no limiters. Not that such a driver is a speed demon, but the flexibility would be much better.

As much as I hate speed limiters, the company really is doing it save for the fuel costs. I mean you are a large company with many trucks and that .3 to say .5 gallons all add up so they want to save as much money as possible. I can understand 65, but 61 to 62 like those Prime or Swift trucks is unreasonable. You're blocking the flow of traffic. Now going too fast like those cattle haulers do going over 80 is just plain crazy. Not only do you have an unstable load with live animals, but you aren't going to stop a truck on a dime with that type of load.

I do agree it dose slow traffic down and anger people when stuck behind a truck. I could never understand why the hell we have speed limits ranging up to 75mph in some states but the trucks are limited down to 10, 15, or even 20 miles under that speed limit.
@L25rn

Depends a great deal on how the truck is setup. Most new computer controlled truck engines are able to be set with "Driver Privilege", That mans that the limit is set to 62 MPH keeping a good limit for 2 lane highways. Once a truck has run for say 15 miles or 15 minutes without a serious steering or brake input, the limit goes up to 72 MPH, most likely scenario, down a 4 lane highway. We have done many engines this way with good feedback from both owners and drivers.

well if its cause size of rig getting speed limiters. buses dont. oh wait what about motorhomes. some of those units weigh as much as a small straight trk. i drove for swift and i had a time where i was going my full speed and was light out in pa and i was out pulling another guy on the hills but he could run on the flats. we were leap frogging essentially. i was close to be able to merge back and flat hed gain not quite where i could fall back in. another hill and id pull up again not quite able to pull in front. that went on for 15 20 mi or so. i had guys yelling at me on the radio. but once i got fully in front that other trk dropped out sight.
