So I came to this video cause I am starting a Custodes army and was looking for painting schemes, and was wondering what difference here would be between Retributor Gold and Gehenna's cause I have Retributor on me but didnt know the difference.
@TheHobbyGrotto
@TheHobbyGrotto 9 ай бұрын
Thanks for stopping by! Gehenna's Gold has a slightly more reddish hue to it but you can definitely use Retributor Armour instead, the overall change in tone once you've done all the other drybrushing is going to be pretty minimal. I'd always recommend doing a test model first so you can see how the colour looks but this scheme should work fine with most golds 😀

@@TheHobbyGrotto I’m not sure if I got a bad batch of Gehenna’s gold, or if my application technique isn’t there, but my gold is definitely more reddish-warm after a full base coat is applied. I tested it between two different models via drybrushing and overbrushing. Any tips?
@TheHobbyGrotto
@TheHobbyGrotto Жыл бұрын
Gehenna's is quite warm, the subsequent drybrushes with silver mixed in plus the nuln oil bring it down. It's possible there is pigment in the bottom of the pot, metallics can be quite stubborn to mix, I always put a mixing ball in the pots to help. 😀

Have you painted any Venatari? I LOVE your Ghenna gold guards and have done mine exactly the same as this video, but on the FW box art for Venatari they look a bit more burnished or weathered and I can’t find any videos of anyone painting them like that! Not a fan of ultra gold Retributor
@TheHobbyGrotto
@TheHobbyGrotto 8 ай бұрын
Thankyou, and glad to hear you found the Custodes video useful! The Venatari are very cool minis, I've unfortunately not painted any so far, I'd really like to paint more Custodes stuff on the channel so we will see how that goes down the road! For a more burnished gold you can try mixing in more silver overall and doing more drybrushing layers, this will buff the gold and make the overall look paler, definitely worth testing out 😀

Fantastic scheme, my favourite of all the Custodes videos on KZbin. Quick question, how would you apply the overbrush gold technique to the larger flat panels on vehicles? Exact same principle or would you do something different?
@TheHobbyGrotto
@TheHobbyGrotto Жыл бұрын
Thankyou! Glad to hear you enjoyed the video. For larger vehicles, you can get the same effect with drybrushing, you just need to make sure you use a large brush (like a makeup brush) and work it up in multiple light stages. This should create a nice burnished look on the flat plates with microtextures. If you go too much of an overbrush on flat panels, the added moisture and paint can sometimes create an undesirable streaky effect. For all this though, I'd recommend testing on a spare flat panel first, just to nail the technique down before moving onto the actual vehicle 😊

@TheHobbyGrotto
@TheHobbyGrotto Ай бұрын
I've never tried metallics like that through the airbrush but I don't see why it wouldn't work, definitely worth a shot of it will save you time/make the process easier. A lot of the look of this gold comes from the wash and highlights 😊

When I overbrush the coverage is kinda sketchy even though I know it's not meant to be perfect. And the paint seems to separate into a much brighter orange. Is this a sign of too much paint? A video or something on overbrushing with metalics would be cool :) Thanks
@TheHobbyGrotto
@TheHobbyGrotto Жыл бұрын
I haven't really encountered the orange you mentioned, you can always try using less paint and doing the overbrush in a few coats, this might help. Sometimes you can also get a streaky effect if there is too much moisture in the brush. I've been meaning to make a video on drybrushing for a while so I'll definitely look into that 😊

Hey, thanks for the great video! After shading the whole model, do you relayer all the Base colours? So the blue of the gemstones, the black and silver? And if so, how much of the shading do you leave? Thank you very much. Kind regards from Germany.
@TheHobbyGrotto
@TheHobbyGrotto Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I generally relayer all paints after washes, just leaving the wash in the deepest shading. You're also tidying and brightening the base colours as washes can sometimes stain areas you don't want them too. If you keep your paint thin, you can have a bit of a blended transition between the shading and the basecoat. On this particular model, you don't really need to reapply the silver (or any metallics) or the black basecoats after the wash, due to the nature of those colours, but the other stuff will benefit from a reapplication to brighten them up and assist with the highlighting stage 😊

Are you drybrushing the gold or doing an overbrush with damp bristles? It looks fantastic
@TheHobbyGrotto
@TheHobbyGrotto Жыл бұрын
Thankyou! This is the classic dry brush technique, but I'm just leaving a bit more on the brush and doing a few coats to get that basecoat nice and consistent, you don't have to worry too much, a heavier overbrush would also work fine as we are adding a wash 😁

What made this a speed paint exactly? Looked like a regular painting tutorial.
@TheHobbyGrotto
@TheHobbyGrotto Жыл бұрын
Good question! These are the techniques I use when painting a bunch of models to a tabletop standard fast, things like drybrushing the whole model, using a limited colour palette, minimising fiddly highlighting, etc. Speed painting is definitely a subjective term open to lots of interpretation, but this is how I grade a tutorial like this, as opposed to something like character painting with more detail or display painting. If I was going to try and paint an army in 24 hours, I would use techniques like in the video 🙂

Are any of these paints able to be mixed? I’m looking to start collecting but need to buy everything and so far for the paints and a box of custodian guard alone is coming in at over £75😅

Thanks for watching! In regards to making the paint selection a bit more budget friendly, one option is to use equivalent paints from a different brand, there are lots of conversion charts out there. If you're using GW here are some ideas to make the paint setup a bit more budget: - You can mix the highlights up from Khorne Red with Evil Sunz Scarlet and skip the Mephiston Red, it will just take a few more layers of highlights to blend it. - You don't need Baharroth Blue if painting on a budget, white can be mixed with Ahriman Blue for highlights. - Leadbelcher and Ironbreaker are fairly similar colours so you can just use one or the other if you want to cut costs. Both will take a highlight from Runefang Steel. - There aren't that many brown bits on the model, you could substitute them for black or another colour. Also I use Ushabti Bone to mix the highlights for the brown, but those areas are small and subtle so you could also mix the highlights with white or another lighter brown from your collection. - Most base colours can be mixed with white to create your highlights, the only thing with white is that it does tend to desaturate the colours, and it's not as consistent as having the actual premixed colours when painting a bunch of minis. Hope this helps 😀

Gehenna's Gold, Khorne Red, Ahriman Blue, Rhinox Hide, Runefang Steel, Nuln Oil, Abaddon Black and White Scar are all key components of the scheme imo, so I'd definitely stick with at least those 😊

No worries, you can definitely mix highlights and shades with black and white, the colour will be a bit different but I think mixing paints to build your highlights is a good skill to work on anyway. 😁
