Also realize that the engine was chosen and the car remade around it. Some of the designers think the V10 is iconic Viper and so with that in mind, the engineers did many things to make the car what it is, 3300 lb curb weight, insane torque with enormous and sticky rear tires/wheels, etc. Despite your narrow view of what is impressive, the new SRT Viper is pretty impressive. I'd venture to say there's some bias in your view of what is impressive. Remember the price point too.

All of those kits are street legal and will last longer than any Viper Hennessey has ever built. Hennessey is the buisness man of the Viper world, but anyone who really wants a fast Viper would never take their car to him. Should look up on the stories of him chopping up customer cars and swapping parts from car to car. Horsepower has very little to do with if a car is street legal or not :}

You're right in some ways, that engine probably does have more potential, I'd be willing to bet they're holding the reigns a little bit on the power output. But it's power to weight ratio is outstanding as is, 640hp is plenty. Most cars can't say they make that sort of power without forced induction. And the torque specs is what really shows with the displacement. It has more torque than any naturally aspirated car on the road today.

9:07 Then you'd be back in the traditional Viper days! No driver assists! That's what I've always loved about Vipers. Pure bred drivers cars with nothing but a big powerful engine sending power through a 6 speed manual and RWD. That's all you need!
@Stag_Stopa2 жыл бұрын
Cars like that are truly missed! Even sport cars todays are heavy, bloated with electronics and filtred. There is no other car that is as pure and powerful at the same time. I always have to laugh when I think about Porsche - rolling supercomputers ... without 4WD, PDK, PASM and all the other crap this cars would be way more uncontrollable and overpowered than even the Gen 1 Vipers were :-D I can't understand why lightweight, powerful, manual RWD cars aren't offered anymore ... the new Nissan Z would have been great if they just would have dared to put a real engine in. Same goes for Mazda RX-9 Concept - they're just too anxious to make it real :-D

The Viper was never designed to be an engineering maverick. It was designed to make a statement. To uphold and recreate an image loss in the fuel crisis of the 70's and 80's. The Viper does this well. The Corvette is designed to cram pack as much technological advancements with the lowest purchasing price.

Its the ACR. The question in, what will they do to it? Hopefully a power boost (not that it needs it but it would be awesome), definitely an awesome aero kit, new tires are said to be on the way (better Pirellis to beat the Michelins, SRT can't get Michelins), and not to mention better brakes, suspension, etc. Basically, it's going to be wicked fast and take a whole lotta records just like the last ACR.

You know what, I have literally no idea. Roads in Europe are less straight, there are more twists and turns and the cars have to adapt to this. So cars are build to handle better which led to the development of the "hot hatch" which is extremely popular in Europe. This should translate into motorsport thereby forming F! which originated in Europe. The handling of cars, the skills of the drivers were thoroughly tested which made the sport exciting and technology developed was put back into cars.

It's a different kind of power delivery & design. Vipers powertrain isn't about revving the piss out of it to get power at the top of the RPM's like some of the smaller supercharged/turbo engines out there. It's a brutish, if a little bit unsophisticated, meat and potatoes hammer that has enormous power at ANY gear and ANY rpm's. Thus a higher redline isn't that important. Also, Top Gear has spread this myth on engine displacement = weight. Other than efficiency hp/liter is mostly irrelevant.

@CodysCarConundrum7 жыл бұрын
Sorry for this really late response, but I think I have two possible answers for you. Answer 1: The Gen 5 Viper has a 8.4 touch screen with the same Uconnect system in other FCA products such as the Challenger, Dart, 300 and so on and so forth. So what they might've done is connect their phones to the BlueTooth system and do a sort of phone call from the BlueTooth system. Answer 2: They probably had some Walkie-Talkies in each car and put them on the same channel so that they could talk like this.

How many cars are making 100hp per liter and are naturally aspirated? Also, how many of those cars are making 600 ft/lbs of torque naturally aspirated? There are different ways to make horsepower. The GEN V Viper makes 640 horsepower with room to grow.

parent company fiat wouldn't let the viper have a better hp/weight ratio than ferrari. i do believe it is 4.9 lbs./hp. that puts it right behind veyron and the f12. there is a lot left on the table with 8.4 liters

And that's the same concept behind oval tracks being popular in America. We have very long, wide, open highways, and just about every road in our country is 2x wider than the roads in Europe, along with being straighter. Although, we do have IndyCar, which still races on oval tracks, but also races on some of the same tracks as F1, as well as a lot of road courses.

The 2010 ACR beat the 2009 corvette at laguna seca. The thing that makes the viper interesting is that even with its lack of racing technology its still holds some of the best times in the world. Do yourself a favor and look up the nurburgring and laguna seca track times and you'll see the viper cracking the top five against cars that are much more "refined". And as far as laguna seca track the viper has the fastest time on it :)

Dude I'm a big GM guy and I absolutely love LS engines, but the Viper has always performed better and they are much better quality cars. The exception is the new C7. The build quality of those is definitely on par with the Gen 5 Viper. But, until we know for sure the performance of the (hopefully) upcoming Z06(7) or ZR1, the Viper is yet again the faster of the two. Mark Reuss of GM said they haven't even been working on a faster variant of the C7 at the moment. Viper ftw.

Yeah but your jetta doesn't make over 600HP. Chevy Camaro V6 and even the Ford mustang V6 make 100HP per liter. But they dont make 600HP. HP cost money if you are gonna do it reliably.
@mattpenner42011 жыл бұрын
its not about dumping more fuel, its seeing how little can be used and how much horsepower can be created per liter. so hp/litres are important/nice to know to be able to compare to other cars. but yes hp/weight ratios are very important

You may or may not know this but a car's total displacement does not necessarily reflect how physically large the engine is. For instance the Corvette Z06 engine which is the N/A 7.0 liter may be physically smaller than the 6.2 liter engine in the ZR1 simply due to internal surfact area. Point being, this 8.4 liter Viper engine may be even lighter than the ZR1 engine, albeit most likely with the supercharger attached. I'd have to look it up, but this is hypothetical. The V10 is all aluminum too

This is the first time I've read someone say that a car has to make more than 100HP per liter in order to be a supercar. lol Thats just silly. What advantage does that even give a car? 100HP per liter is a nice attribute to look at. But it doesnt give you any advantage. Especially considering the fact that OHV engines are lighter than smaller DOHC engines.

An issue comes with Chryslers ties to Ferrari through Fiat, the Viper cannot have a better power to weight ratio than an F12 for political reasons. The 8.4 is one of the strongest engines on Earth and could Easily make 800 HP, with tuning and a new exhaust and adjusted timing. It's not that it cant.

@rickd606711 жыл бұрын
What most people don't know is that the Viper GTS-R (race cars) have nearly 200hp LESS than the street car! This is because the sanctioning bodies (IMSA, American Lemans Series, etc) restricts them. If you could see the size of the tiny little air tubes the Vipers are breathing through you wouldn't believe it. The Corvette team cried that the Vipers were "too powerful" so the Vipers are now restricted/choked. What a joke.
@Inklebonker111 жыл бұрын
Yea im a subscriber of fastlanedaily. That really ticks me off about Ferrari. I knew something wasn't right with the new viper. 8.4 liter OHV v10 with only 640hp? It simply doesn't make sense. Ferrari does this crap too much.

The thing is, turbos, overhead cams, etc. add weight! HP per Liter has no bearing on performance, it's all about power/weight. What yous should be asking yourself is why the Aventador with it's "smaller" engine weighs 200lbs more than the Viper.

i dont think Fiat has any say in the Viper. It is a Halo car for chrysler and the normal rules that apply to other cars dont apply to the Viper. Cars like the Dodge Dart generate revenue and profits, Viper barely generates any profit compared to that car, neither will it affect sales of any sort of ferrari since they are all made in limited numbers and have a huge price gap.

I don't like hp/liter. i will try to tame those beast. It's simple, get money and put huge turbo. Italian DOHC are more "fragile", you need more maintenance cost for your 700+ hp engine. The American OHV gain awesome torque, more durable, high capabilities and also: hard to be tamed. /watch?v=i6ogKV3bFkU
