Mission accomplished! I didn't even think about checking the results and now I think this will make it easier to find the correct CC settings. Recently I adjust the upload CC but in the test it jumps up to 115ms or 200ms (going red) and back down again. I am not sure what is going on. Thanks for this amigo!

I took me a long time to figure out how to get a good setting; one that I trusted and could use for gaming. Also I was going to show like Netduma graphs of 100-0% against download and upload speeds and that just put me off doing it. So much effort. All I needed to do was just tell ya. So much easier. I'm hoping the technique that I developed works for everybody. I want to know if peeps have success. I certainly hope so.

Thanks Sim really appreciate all the effort you put into your videos and helping the gaming community and especially us Duma users. These tips definitely helped with with a few things I was having problems with and that was definitely trying to figure out an easier way of testing the bufferbloat than doing constant changes in the sliders and the "save profile" also never though about utilizing that feature much other than the default profiles. Thanks!

A very nice video. Bufferbloat is not actually jitter, it's extremely high latency commonly referred to as ping. Although high levels of bufferbloat (which causes latency to become unstable) effects your jitter.

Thanks a lot for the info. One question. I have the fiber cable connected to the ONT (Optical Network Terminal) and the router (Asus rt-ac86u) connected to the ONT with an ethernet cable. With that configuration, what option should I have to choose to do the dslreports speedtest? Gigabit/Fiber or Cable? Thanks again.
@simjc746 жыл бұрын
I guess this depends on the provider. Do you have to configure your router to dial up a connection, like PPPoE? If you do then i would say DSL. If it is just plug and play, and you get a static IP then I guess it is Fiber. Cable would be for traditional cable TV/internet.
@d3m3tri06 жыл бұрын
Yes I use to connect PPPoE with user and password (I obtain dynamic ip). But I really thought that DSL was just for ADSL connections. In my case, the fiber cable is inside my home and is connected to an ont and the ont to the router.
@simjc746 жыл бұрын
I am fibre to the cabinet (VDSL), and not the premises, and use PPPoE. Thus I run DSL tests. I guess in your case try both DSL and Fibre, and see what kind of loading you get.

Sim! Thank you for all the knowledge you share. I have a huuuge question for you. I have a modem/router (2 in 1) that hooks up to my cable internet. on 100% up and down, my milliseconds reach 1000! And it is so bad, sometimes dsl reports disables bufferbloat and testing is very scattered with each try. Any advice? Put the R1 in DMZ??? Im excited to have this product, but I am bummed that something is hindering me. My speeds are rated for up to 100mb down and 10mb up. Mind you, I even get almost 50-100ms ping whilst my down is below 10% on the netduma
@simjc747 жыл бұрын
1sec ping at 100%; ouch, but you are not the first to tell me such things. Have you tried pre-emptive and reactive? So here is my suggestion: 1. Settings->Miscellaneous, disable (untick) 'Enable deep packet processing' 2. Congestion Control, click 'Reset Distribution' 3. Congestion Control, Reactive, 99% for both upload and download; run dslreports.com; set to 90%, re-run test, set to 80%, re-run test, ... go down to 30%. Note which one gives you best ping; click on the share results button which gives you graph, with an error bar, i.e. min ping max ping, gives a clearer picture what is going on. 4. Congestion Control, Pre-emptive, 99%. Repeat step 3 using pre-emptive Obviously for steps 3 and 4, make sure you are connected using an ethernet cable, not wifi, and that nobody else is using the internet. If things do not improve, it is most likely your ISP. _Sim_

When you limit the bandwidth, should you limit the whole network or just the console/pc? If you just limit the console/pc, could other devices on the network max your connection and create more bufferbloat?
@simjc748 жыл бұрын
When still using high(ish) speeds, limit the entire network, so other devices do not affect your gaming experience. If you only limit your console/PC, then another device if it maxes out your internet will cause lag.

@simjc748 жыл бұрын
Right the BTHH5 is a modem/router. So does that have upnp, port forwarding or DMZ? What are you connecting to your TP-Link? Just your game console? Lets imagine BTHH5 -> TP-Link -> Console and BTHH5 -> rest of home network. What you could do to rule out where the problem is, is put the TP-Link in a DMZ if your BTHH5 supports it. Then if your TP-Link is working, you can try on your tp-link upnp is on and then DMZ, to see if your XB1 gives you an open NAT. If both TP-Link options work, then switch TP-Link back to upnp only and turn off that DMZ. You then know to focus your attention to the BTHH5. Alternatively just so you know, you can get BT OpenReach modems (~£10 last time I looked) for BT infinity on Ebay. It is then just Openreach modem -> TP-Link -> all of home including XB1.

I have a question on bufferbloat results, hopefully it's not a dumb one . I get an A+ bufferbloat with A quality, but the background has a lot of red (www.dslreports.com/speedtest/9219149), whereas I see most people who get an A+ bufferbloat have a white background and much less wiggle room with that red line (forum.netduma.com/uploads/monthly_01_2017/post-7883-0-98749200-1483813395.png). Does this mean anything or am I just looking too deep into this? haha
@simjc748 жыл бұрын
Just rescued this comment from the spam box. Very interesting. BUT I think in your case the "Idle" having a minimum of 1ms is confusing the dslreports magic code, and it is incorrectly drawing the red region much lower than it should. Normally red starts something like +30ms. Your pings are below 20ms. So I would say you are okay. _Sim_

@simjc748 жыл бұрын
Hello Filipe. All you can do, is have both services "enabled" for your PC and PS4. Find the best geo filter for both of your games. It uses the same geofilter and settings. So you cannot have 2 profiles loaded at the same time. If you need different network speeds for PS4 and PC, you will need to use Device Prioritisation. _Sim_

PS4 or XB1? You may have to do a manual port forward for port 3074 UDP. For some reason on PS4, BO3 has stopped opening via UDP. Goto options in game; network, and the game tells you what port it could not open. Hope that helps. _Sim_

thanks for the helping video slim I was just wondering when moving the sliders do we have to move them one at a time are both at the same time because I did notice that it does affect the other one when moved to low or to high
@simjc748 жыл бұрын
Yes they do affect each other; the sliding them together technique is just to help quickly find optimal download and upload settings. Generally I expect optimal settings to be a low download and a high upload.
@navarodriguez80118 жыл бұрын
hey slim I've been having a hard time finding a good optimal settings . where I'm having the problem is on the download I can't find a good setting for it I have it on reactive and 44 down 45up but the download will move like crazy sometimes even getting to the red area I don't know what else to try I called my ISP all they made me do was run a speed test I get 66.38 download and 5.84 up and it's cable so if you could give me some help I would appreciate
@simjc748 жыл бұрын
Have you tried it like at 9am in the morning? What about trying pre-emptive to see if it is more stable.
@navarodriguez80118 жыл бұрын
I have tried it at nine like for two hours trying it. another thing is that you know where you set your bandwidth that you get from your ISP I put my up and down that I get which is 66.38 down and 5.84 up but when I go back to look at it it says 100 down and 10 up I don't know why
@simjc748 жыл бұрын
So if you have clicked "Reset Distribution", and have both sliders at 100%, speedtest should give you a good indication of what your max up and down is in reality, i.e. the truth and not what your ISP tells you. Then make sure on the Device Manager page as per the video that the two numbers you entered for upload/download max speeds is tweaked (adjusted by you) so that when you set both sliders to 50% you get a true 50% of the value speedtest tells you. Also make sure you are clicking on the right modem test when doing the bufferbloat test.

@simjc747 жыл бұрын
I tend not to use device prioritisation these days as it seems to give non smooth network connections. I tend to use pre-emptive which works best for me. Easy to find out whether reactive or pre-emptive is best for you, by doing some tests against dslreports.com starting at 90% (both up and down on the global) and going down 10% at a time; see which one gives you the best ratings on average and experiment from there. I have a newer video on it somewhere.

First thanks for an interesting video. I just heard of buffer bloat and was looking for something informative. In my own case, I'm apparently lucky to have a well functioning fiber connection and seemingly a good router. On a 250/100 plan and a TP-Link Archer C8 router with the latest firmware, turning off "NAT Boost" and enabling QoS only served to more or less double the (small) buffer bloat on the download part of DSLReports test from about 25 to 50'ish milliseconds. Could still be worth using QoS if there were several machines running things at the same time. Just not in this ideal case of one router wired to one machine.
@simjc748 жыл бұрын
You have tried using the bandwidth control feature of the TP-Link? If not sure watch this old lag comp video of mine where I step through it. I'm aware TP-Link sometimes refer to this as QoS in their marketting stuff, but QoS and Bandwidth control are two different things. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aoqZhJawhLVpmJY

You are not the first person who uses Virgin Media to tell me that they get a 1second ping by default, unfortunately! I would expect a 60-70ms ping by default until tweaked. The Quality rating tends to be dependent on the algorithm used. Have you tried Pre-Emptive? I found for me, that I got higher quality ratings using that instead of Reactive.
