This 1.8L 2ZR-FXE engine from a 2010 Toyota Prius failed catastrophically and locked up. This was likely due to a lack of lubrication to a connecting rod bearing, which caused it to seize. The connecting rod wrapped itself around the crankshaft, causing the engine to lock up. As a result, the MG1 inside the transmission could no longer start the engine, until its hybrid battery was depleted.
Other common issues with the 2ZR-FXE are headgasket failures, EGR valves becoming clogged and oil burning due to low tension oil rings. While Toyota's were once known for their reliability, this particular generation (2010-2015) Prius's were one to avoid.
Here's another 2ZR-FXE engine teardown from a Lexus CT200h that suffered a headgasket issue:

The heat cycle of hybrid engines which expands and contracts the metals multiple times DOES damage the head gasket more often than normal cars

Man I have a 2015 and love it but dread the day the head gasket fails. Some people on forum's are convinced that not completely cleaning the EGR system is what leads to failures but I don't think it's the full story. Really looking forward to the transmission tear down as I know they are unique. Rumor has it that you can change the fluid without the worry of it slipping afterwards.

Bravo! I always enjoy your shows! I hope you never run out of family clothing which can clean spills, nor toothbrushes. Small point from an old goat: I see younger people refer to an oil passage as a "galley". Actually the term I think is "gallery". Otherwise perfect, you waste no time, and explain all in great detail. You have a gift for that. Regards.

It's amazing the amount of damage you found in there. I wonder if the engine was already knocking for some time before it went kaboom

This is one of the very best car engine of all time and cars. Most of the failures occur as result of misuse or neglect. Timing chain tensioner is oil pressure loaded .

my condolences to your tooth brush.... but many thanks to you pointing out the innumerable failure points on that engine. Normally a typical Toyot engine usually outlast the body😄

"Hey Princess, watch out, the King may steal your dress." 😂🤣 I think the bars leak type sealant ruined the engine. Engine was fairly clean & pistons not steamed cleaned. Maybe burned oil, had to add frequently, so it kept the engine clean. I own a gen 4, so this interested me. Gen 4's have heat exchanger that leaks coolant, hence, overheating & possible head gasket probs because of it. 🙄👍🖖🇺🇸

The low tension rings cause burning oil faster than many other engines. You might not realize there's no oil until it's too late like this !

the secret to avoid headgasketproblems is changing the electric waterpump (only use an Aisin, which is the OEM!) before it fails, and clean the EGR-system every 30-40 k km's. This can be done by yourself if you are a little familiar with engines. And don't drive like a maniac off course

Premature failure... at 340k kms :) Not bad. Stop leak gummed up cylinder 3 somehow? Seems like the only smoking gun.

I don’t know if you can get a metal filter cap for the Prius or other 1.8 motor cars. The ones that have an optional metal cap have a bigger oil filter

Car care nut says not to swap from original to different oil filter housing because there may be small differences in size so it's not compatible (if the oil filter housing is incorrect it may allow oil to bypass the filter which is bad

This hybrid transmission has two induction motor generator how it works that you create a rotating magnetic field and the rotor lag behind that called positive slip in generator mode the engine drive the rotor faster than the synchronous speed of the stator which is called negative slip.

Any car brand engines can fail even so called "KING OF RELIABILITY" Toyota can fail, mainly due to irregular oil and filter changes. I have seen Chrysler, Ford, GM engines last forever with proper maintenance which is oil change/filter every 5000km or 3000 miles...........

Looks like it ran out oil. You can't blame toyota if the owner doesn't check oil level in a car over 300 ooo miles
