Now that is how you do a DIY video. No endless jabbering on about useless info. No skipping over vital details. Showing each step, but fast forwarding or skipping to next step to keep things short. This is real quality professional stuff. Excellent work!

Best mechanic's video I have seen yet. He didn't stick his face in the video like some wannabe Hollywood actor, he didn't skip any steps (well he didn't show blowing out the front plug hole but he did say to do it earlier), he spoke clearly, he called out the wrench sizes, he anticipated what to expect next, etc. I can only fault him for not putting in the 18 ft/lb torque to the plugs and the torque on the intake plenum bolts and cautioning to go easy on the coil pack bolts. The torques could go into his video information as one other guy did. Otherwise he did it right. I'll subscribe and hope he makes some money and a lot more videos. Why would anyone downvote this video? 32 idiots.

I finished the job today and couldn't/wouldn't have done it without this video! I watched the video 3-4x before starting, set up the laptop next to the car, and followed it step-by-step. It took a little over 4 hours, but i was proceeding carefully and doing some clean-up along the way. No problems. The only thing I'll add is that, when dealing with those pesky bolts in the back, make sure to jiggle the plenum as needed to avoid binding - it took forever to get the 14mm bolt out since the weight of the plenum was forcing the bolt against side of the hole. Also, a 1/4" drive rachet is small enough to use on the outer 12mm bolt. Thanks again for a great DIY video!

My only concern was we couldn't find a third support bar behind the throttle body and low and behold when we removed the plenum and throttle body there wasn't one there. No problem, we got it done. Nice tutorial. The brackets on the passenger side was a beast. Also, I forgot to lose the PVC valve and tubing prior to lifting the air plenum up and out (don't forget) The hose was stuck on the PVC valve. (TIP) use a heat air gun around the hose and the PCV valve will slide off more easier) where the hose meets the PVC valve. The gasket you replaced in the video is not the same for a Toyota Camry 2004, its different. Good think I had the correct gasket with me Everything else looked and is identical. Overall this is a great video. Its the best one I found on youtube.

My brother had taken over our mother's car after she passed but he never did any routine or preventative maintenance on it. It's a 2005 Toyota Camry LE V6 3.0 litre with over 150K miles. What things should I replace in the blind? I was thinking about all of the belts, hoses, timing belt kit and the PVC valve, spark plugs and what else should I consider replacing to put the vehicle in optimum condition?

No,you dont need to remove the plenelum to get to the rear plugs and coils. All i did was remove the actuator on the radiator cap side of the engine and a couple of rubber hoses,and then i removed the throttle body and air intake joiners and you have enough room to change the plugs from both sides by using the right tools-wobble head extension and straight bar extension.

Used this video to change the spark plugs and plenum gasket... Used your other video for the timing belt! Want to hear something funny, the hardest part of this entire thing was removing the stupid rear (3) bolts from the intake manifold... WOW!!!! That 14mm on the passenger side was HORRIBLE. It took me a solid hour to get it loose and that is with using the same tools, there was like no room to work! Then it took me another hour to get the bolts back in... Overall I'd say this was more hellish than the timing belt because of those screws, ahhaa. At first I wasn't sure if I should change the spark plugs because they looked ok, but then I thought, everything is already apart just do it. Overall your videos are great!! Thank you again, -Nigel

@speedkar99 9 жыл бұрын
I'm glad the video helped you change the plugs! Yes I've heard others have had problems accessing those rear bolts, especially the 14mm one. I didn't seem to have to much of a problem with a ratcheting wrench. I believe loosening the plenum bracket at the bottom of the engine gives you enough play to catch the top bolt in the plenum when putting it back on. The two 12mm behind the throttle body was more easily accessed with a 1/4" ratchet if I recall.

Those 3 bolts holding the plenum and throttle body are by far the hardest part to remove and reinstall. I did get the 12mm wrench you mentioned and did get them out and back, but man my hands hurt from contorting them like I did and all the tight spaces I had to squeeze them into. Wish you added the torque specs on what you knew of. Certainly for the strut bolts would be helpful. Otherwise, I did get a lot of out this video.

Holy hell. I guess the days of changing out a set of plugs in 15 minutes are over. Whoever designed the layout should be beaten with a rubber hose because it's friggin ridiculous what you have to do to simply replace 3 damn spark plugs. P.S. Great job on the video. Many thanks.

Glad I can help! How did you find the job on the Sienna, is it a lot tighter working behind the engine with the wiper assembly above the motor? Did you have to remove the wiper motors too? We also have an 06 Sienna that's due for spark plug replacement next year.

Excellent explanation of how to do this job . Plenum nut R & R was the trickiest part no doubt.Highly recommend fishing line or even a colored line attachment, as i blew this off and it necessitated a trip to the hardware store for a replacement bolt. I took the time to write every instruction down ,as told, but got ahead of myself and disconnected one extra brake line that was a puzzle to reconnect, and in order to find it, I left off the MAS causing a christmas tree lighting effect with my idiot lights. A trip to Auto Zone and a code read reminded me all I needed to do was pay closer attention to the game plan and reconnect MAS plug, ( DUH). Iridium spark plugs were expensive enough, but in order to buy the one manifold gasket I needed, I had to purchase a kit with 3 other gaskets I doubt I'll ever use, that cost me close to $ 100. My '04 Highlander with 82Ks gasket actually looked ok, but I just followed directions to replace, but if could have avoided that big extra cost it would have been great.Thanks for excellent video, and thanks to You Tubers I feel I can attempt almost any fix-it job at home , this process is amazing and I am truly grateful for this technology !

Holy Cow, this is a pain in the ass. Getting the intake manifold lifted off the studs is also difficult to do. Be careful when removing the coils because I had one of the foam seals fall off and fall down onto the sub-frame which took another 20 minutes to get back. Don't press on the little plastic tabs that hook into the coils either because they break off with the slightest pressure. The 3 bolts holding on the plenum and throttle body on difficult as others have said. The middle one is hardest. Ratchet wrenches are a must and make sure you have a 8mm hex wrench before you start. This video also applies to v6 3.0L toyota camry from 2004. 1mzFE engine Also note that the strut tower on each side is held down by those 2 bolts. I'd recommend torque them ~75ftlbs with blue threadlocker.

Great job thinking maybe I can do it but you said: It is necessary to remove the plastic intake plenum to reach the rear spark plugs. On the Highlander, Sienna and RX330, the wipers and windshield cowl must be removed to access the rear bolts. Do you have a video for RX330 or wipers and windshield cowl removal? Thanks!
@speedkar99

You can try spraying some penetrating oil on it, and limit the extension size on your socket so it doesn't slip. Use a breaker bar or a pipe over the ratchet handle for a bit more leverage. Jerk the bolt loose rather than apply full continuous force, kinda like an impacting action to break the bolt loose. And don't back out the rear plenum bracket bolts all the way so that there isn't any pressure on the 4 Allen bolts.

You can probably remove the intake and change the plugs in 2-3 hours. A proper throttle body cleaning involves unbolt it from the intake plenum to clean the back side of the throttle plate with TB cleaner and a tooth brush. You'll need a new TB gasket for re-installation.

Always replace the three rear engine/ignition coils as well, even if they are old but still work, since you don't want to go through the crazy process again, if your rear engine coil(s) fail! You can use them as backup for the front ones.

Hey speedkar99, First off thanks for the video. I'm at the part where you clean the throttle body. Was wondering is it safe to clean throttle body plate with tooth brush while it is on and open like that? and did it move while you were cleaning it?
@speedkar99
@speedkar99 10 жыл бұрын
Yes its safe to clean the TB with it open and on, as long as you have something firm on the gas pedal holding it and it won't accidentally slip and close the plate. Moving the plate manually is not recommended as you could mess up the calibration.
