I feel the truth (especially at this point in iterations) comes down to Hwoarang having _too much_ going for him. More so than any other character. Especially now that they gave him some of Baek's key tech, in T7. Many gimmick strats to avoid neutral, but so many that it stops being a gimmick, and becomes a crutch of a strategy. He is a nuisance for certain players who fight him, and a burden for those that put the time in to rock him. The Taki syndrome, is most prominent in Hwoarang - the mentality that: "If I win, you were bad and had no idea how to play the matchup. If I lose, it's because Hwo is flawed and so easy to deal with". A character that relies too much on your opponents lack of knowledge, to succeed. I don't personally mind fighting the character, but I always get the impression, the Hwoarang doesn't even enjoy playing the character. So much effort, that it infects your overall perspective of Tekken.

Always a pleasure to see your Hwo in play, regardless. I had a pretty good idea how you felt about this, before sitting through a 32 minute video. The philosophy of the character speaks volumes.

@@FlyXcur I see where you're coming from, but I don't necessarily agree. Yoshi has some genuinely good, rewarding lows, aswell as a counter which launches. The character may have prided himself on being a _low-tier_ mixup machine in previous iterations, but I don't feel some players give current Yoshi enough credit in how honest and rounded he is. _You don't have to be wacky to succeed anymore, but it definitely rewards you when it works._

About Hwo being able to pressure the opponent better: As a Jin, I've always had a hard time pressuring against a Hwo who spammed b2. It made me want to stop and think twice before unleashing an offensive plan (something that many other character do NOT force me to do, except Asuka, Paul, Geese or Armor King). Sure, it's punishable, it's a commitment, but it feels like an over annoying explosive game of rock paper scissors, in which Hwo has more advantages by design (I mean, it felt; it's been a long time since I haven't met much Hwo online... As it's a past experience, it might be my scrubiness talking). But you know what I mean, Hwo being positive after hits that don't look positive... Forcing to sidewalk on 3 bars... Chipping away the life bar on strings that kinda look infinite...
@mamamia59055 жыл бұрын
Safir Lamkhantar honestly I would say the best matches for me as a HWO main come from Jin and im not just saying that because theyre supposed to be “rivals” in game but really it seems like Jin has good counter measures for Hwo and his hell sweep and pokes keeps the match fair and interesting imo I love fighting Jin
@iVesperX5 жыл бұрын
(Im assuming you're talking about b1, since b2 is a duckable high) most hwoarang players that spam b1, use it after a - frame move that they feel like is the end of their turn. analyzing them and seeing what moves they like to use b1 after is a good strategy, then using Jin's n4 will get you a juicy ch combo. as for the rest of the stuff you mentioned, tekken is a game of rock paper scissors in itself. just like any other character, you're going to have to gather data and make good reads if you want to guarantee your win. p.s. stepping will beat a lot of hwo's options, sidewalking isn't always required

Just back dash it and whiff punish it
@krishbhalla47895 жыл бұрын
@@Quran_eee It does sound very easy, but the problem is that you can't really put your own pressure in because of the fear of Hwoarang b+1. And having to work around it is very hard especially when you don't have a homing move or a move that tracks to the right fully which is under 15f. And trying to not attack can mean that he will try to approach and pressure you, and Hwoarang's pressure is annoying and to deal with. So yeah, backdashing is a good way to deal with b+1, but you also need to find ways to pressure Hwoarang to win because you don't want him to use his new power crush (cancel) as an approach tool and start pressuring you.

I believe that is why hworang is seen as really good to the non pro players. You literally explained a situation where I'm sitting and becoming a counter striker trying to figure out what the pattern is while he get to push buttons and maintain over whelming pressure not worried about what about my character or their move list. That is an OP character. Only good thing is hworang players in general have no defense as they have relied on being the only person attacking. 😁

Hworang isn't OP, the players pick him up for how free games are if he isn't labbed properly. Basically, to actually be "good" (i.e. actually have others look at your game with respect, that's the great equalizer here) with hwo you have to be REALLY good at this game. You have to unlearn a lot of bad habits from playing with him, that's for sure. He requires zero fundamentals of the game to get to red (not joking) but most give up because as easy it can be with him at first, it's exponentially harder once you actually have to "learn" tekken. To say he's execution heavy is an understatement when you're trying to get the most out of him but there's no one else like him on the roster. A "good" hwo Inspires shock and awe and that's what keeps me practicing! I wish speed would stick with him but I really do understand because it's a bonafide catch 22.

He said that you gotta make the correct reads to your opponents defence, but it comes with a cost.. It is risky if they know how to defend. Hwoarang can get 2 good poke reads to continue the pressure, but if they read you correctly they get a launch. So spend time reading your opponent and how they react to your offence. He doesn't seem to like that type of gameplay tho, since it is hard in high level.

I'm a little confused as to why, with a trash neutral game, a Hwoarang player would want to engage the opponent there first to download opponent tells. Why wouldn't a Hwoarang player just use safer options from his rushdown blender to feel out the exploitable areas in his opponent's defense?
@Speedkicks5 жыл бұрын
The key to this point is in the opening parts of the vid. There's no safe options when you can't control the timing of your attacks, every time Hwoarang shows an aggressive situation, he can't disengage and has to choose something that can get him killed vs a specific defensive option.

OK c'mon now for fucks sake. Are you actually trying to be a victim as a Hwoarang main? He's one of the most powerful characters in the game. Well into intermediate play, you can basically just breeze past the majority of your opponents because the onus is completely ON them to know the matchup, which is not easy either since he has like 1000 moves many of which leave him with + frames. If someone doesn't know the match up you can bet your ass even a very average Hwoa will blow them up. I say this as a Hwoarang main. You're making him sound like he's Lee or Devil Jin or someshit. He's not. He is very easy to cheese with until you reach the really high levels of play. Yeah, there's a bit of an execution barrier but god bless that otherwise he'd literally be worse than Katarina.
@requiem4185 жыл бұрын
It's easy to beat hwoarang offline because there's no lag and Sidestepping, low parrying, low blocking and back dashing always works consistently , but in online situations even a tiny bit of lag makes it very hard and any kind of movement against his offense feels unsafe and the whole experience fighting against a hwoarang player becomes very annoying and depressing cuz you know we just kinda die.(I am a scrub so maybe it's only me)
@caiobruno80062 жыл бұрын
Thing is, he needs to be exactly like that on high level because Hwoarang players get away for free in any other level. You can do those flamingo stances and beat everyone without a single brain cell working until people actively put in more effort into learning the match-up than you did at playing the character, so when they do, of course you're supposed to take the L home.

Exhibit a): If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound? Exhibit b): If a "cheap" character isn't _actually_ cheap because he has a *critical*, self-defeating weakness that is unlikely to present itself outside of high-level, well-informed Tekken play, does that then make him fair/honest? The justification behind this, that Speedkicks is highlighting, is that Hwoarang himself benefits poorly from this distance-closing, forward-advancing, high-mid-low-alternating, counter-hit-accompanying, poor-decision-influencing flurry of attacks. "Poorly" being 40 points of damage for his trouble. But I dunno, man... Hwoarang netting 40 points of damage per pressure string in an attempt to get his opponent to press punishable buttons isn't exactly nothing- it's 1/4 of their life bar (each character has 170 points of health). And that's without counter hit damage being factored in. And "Just sidestep!" against Hwoarang is easier said than done. You really do have to hit the lab and get the timing of your stepping down while he's in his button-pressing frenzy or else every attack will behave like a homing move. I guess I can't blame anyone for wanting to believe that the character they play is hard to use and has to fight an uphill battle just to win; it's a big part of why using C.Viper in SFIV felt so rewarding to me. But top players (read: players who know precisely how to deal with Hwoarang) make up a minority of the player base. In other words, to the majority, Hwoarang is effectively a cheap bastard, who makes fighting Eddy on a yellow connection feel preferable. However, at the same time, it's nobody's fault but your own if you're not a player who knows exactly how to deal with Hwoarang's bullshit. This is Tekken after all. I do believe he gets away with murder though.

SpeedKicks doesn't "spam" attacks for the sake of spamming, but more so to learn how an opponent is playing and how he deals with them. *Not intended to diss spammers or the lack thereof* If you don't attack, you don't know where to hit the low blows basically. and when I say low, I don't mean their legs. Just an opinion and you could very much be a lot more conservative with your attacks when you do indeed poke at them or around, leaving you a lot less vulnerable. Though in all honesty, according to one legend in Tekken, Knee(notsure.exe), 'A lot of players don't have a good defense, I do, I win.' totally paraphrased.

Just in case you don't know ( but I think you already do ) the just frame version is done by imputing f, n, d/f 4 instead of f, n, d, d/f 4 so it does not work like an electric, it's more like Heihachi's blue sparks crouch dash 1. He boils Hwoarang down to his absolute most basic components and does very well for himself. Next time you watch K-Wiss in tournament, see how often he gets a big sidestep into Back 3 launch punish. It's beautiful simplistic and compact Tekken.

@@kylefields3951 Naw. Speedkicks came from am era wear the character actually sucked. T6 and T7 Hwo are actually pretty good. But yea. Playing him traditional and not like a party animal or rushdown king, is the best way. Tryna rush someone down and they make a hard read and hopkick or sidestep you, get blown up and lose half your life bar or more is not the way. I miss Tekken. And i fear this new one isnt going to help me get back into it

Meh. There's alot of things you can get by baiting them with something they should know. For example. Mishima players. They seem to be the ones with the most consistent anti hwo flow charts. Stepping rff d/f 4 and electric... They won that exchange, 80ish damage with the wall. But if they go for it again they are eating the backlash for stepping. It's only 2 moves but has so many negative scenarios for the opponent. Ofc you can option select both with a ss and then a high crushing low that ch launches because it will punish both options. At plus 5, rff df 3 snuffs anything other than ss block and i14 moves. How long until they try to interrupt and you get a handful of different free things for them opting to just block or even attack. That whole situation came just from them knowing to ss. Another example I prefer though, is the highs that end in rfs. It recovers so fast, getting a ws punish is pretty difficult offline. Online with rfs f4, 4 good luck. Knowing you're opponent knows a duckable string and will duck you can bait a ch for them actually getting the read. Usually after that they just give up on ducking and down jab and on the read. Low parry. I Just feel hwo gets alot better the more they know because depending on how well you know you're him you can counter the obvious counter.

ok so like after watching like 3 or 4 hwoarang videos i think i know what to do with his strings

That was probably the most convoluted way to say "Hwoarang's offense is not broken enough for him to be viable". He is designed to be an offensive beast and that's all there is to it. Everything else is overthinking. His offense loses value at higher ranks, he sacrifices viability for immense variety, unfortunately. It would be amazing to have this variety be viable at high ranks, because compared to some Eddy or Zafina, at least Hwoarang's stance during offense is not so evasive, making him a "fair" offensive character, but unfortunately he is established as a casual favourite in developers' eyes and won't receive what he needs to go pro.

Maaan.. After red ranks everybody just duck and punish you. And all moves againt ducking opponents have too many frames. All of this combos is good only after laucnchers. Hwo is a worst character of S3. All of 1,2, x,y instantly punish. And 90% its been CH. 2,x,y too. Dead character w/o good punishes, CH, mid kicks. RIP Hwo.

How cheap do you want hwoarang to be? Mean while the low tiers like gigas and panda have to make do with what they have.. harada namco has given you guys so much hand holding as opposed to players who main the low tiers.. if you wanna ask for buffs.. be fair to everyone else too

Tried using the advice given in this video to fight Hwoarang, got hit on every sidestep, ducked on mids, got frozen and poked out by lows. Cant recognize what I am looking at most of the time, and really, unless you are playing at a high level and putting in that time in fully learning him, it will be the same problem. Hence why this character can just flowchart through 90% to 95% of the playerbase, and will continue to do so. Especially with the changes he got in T7, complete scrub shit that actually conditions Hwoarang players to not even bother to block.
@lorenzogadola84015 жыл бұрын
That's because you didnt even understand what he meant randomly ducking or side steping is an easy way to get killed by every char
@OldManNutcakez5 жыл бұрын
@@lorenzogadola8401 I sense you are the one who does not understand what he is talking about. You have to make a read to get out of his flamingo/RFF flowcharts, via ducks, interrupts and sidesteps. And unless you really learn the flowcharts & options, it's just a guess. The timing & reaction also needs some getting used to. It's just not realistic for most players to put in that time, not even if they want to. So as a result, few Hwoarang players ever have to advance beyond their advanced flowcharts.
@lorenzogadola84015 жыл бұрын
@@OldManNutcakez the fact that you brought up the time factor make it a completely different argument in wich i agree to but thats a different matter and also the way you said it in the comment made me think you were randomly ducking rather than doing a read over an observation on that hwoarang's flowcharts. But anyway a read is a read so nothing guarantees its gonna work out. So i kinda understand your frustration but tbh if you dont wanna or cant put the time in i'll suggest to run away from every lab eavy chars
