They used Photoshop; it used to cost like $100 (I think), but now I think it's like $10 per month, but you can get it cheaper (I think) but you have to get other programs with it.

Over on Deviantart it's become a tradition to tag artists you look up to in "wishlists" when it gets close to christmas :> When I have the time I tend to look through the lists I'm tagged in and draw people's characters for them. But people also appreciate just random gift-art in itself, so you could technically just look through deviantart for characters you think look cool and draw them (but it's always best to ask the owner first)

Well it is a bit tricky, with symmetry and that stuff,, but what I usually avoid is a total frontal view (even in real-life, dogs look derpy when viewn totally head-on) I would normally angle the head at least slightly downwards like in this example: remarin.deviantart.com/art/Headshot-batch-10-679299794 and when sketching I often end up naturally adding some kind of angle to the head, even if I started with a totally centered view at the beginning x: so don't worry if you're having trouble, there are still times where I simply am unable to get the face right and have to try a different angle all-together
