Fun fact, one of the reasons that a lot of doom console ports runs poorly is because that except the enemies doom isn't a sprite game engine but a bitmap one(a abridged version is that they use texture and generate the images on the fly). When doom launched and even some time later there wasn't any big console that wasn't a sprite based console(where it's gpu was made to handle sprites) so porting to them was difficult
@solarflare90784 жыл бұрын
The 32X wasn't a sprite based one. The 32X struggles to get 60 FPS on certain 2D games because the background has to be rendered in 3D, lol. Probably explains the high framerate the 32X port had.

For the longest time my only experience with Doom was the SNES port, and I know it looks awful, and is a slog to control, but something about that somehow adds to it for me. It's like how the sluggish tank controls of the first few Resident Evil games makes you feel more helpless. A single cacodemon felt like a huge threat, and (if I recall correctly) not being able to save the game further added to this. Nightmare seemed impossible, but trying to slowly crawl through this game as a kid on ultraviolent in one sitting was an amazing experience for me. When I play PC I feel like an incredibly powerful supersoldier, who the demons should fear. When I played SNES, I felt like an ordinary soldier, who was just barely able to scrape by these terrifying and dangerous demons, by being smarter, and a little lucky. Overall I acknowledge PC is superior by miles, especially for speedrunning, but I'll always have a soft spot for my casual snes playthrough.

You think that's bad? 8 years before Doom, the most popular gaming computer was the C64. If you wanted to shoot scaling sprites at high speeds, you'd need a quarter for Space Harrier at the mall. It was the same year that Super Mario Bros 1 landed. Most of America didn't care...yet. 8 years before that, the Atari 2600 was being outsold, 3-1, by Nintendo's Pong console. The Space Invaders port that saved them wouldn't save them until a few years later. 8 years before that, none of the tech giants wanted anything to do with Ralph Baer or his brown box. Using machines to play games on a television screen? Sounds like bad sci-fi. Novelty aside, what can it do that a real table tennis set can't?

hahaha a pregnancy test can run doom, and the calculator doesn't surprise me, the texas instruments calculator is a beast, it's basically like a micro computer. Ironically i think the colours look better on the snes version than the jaguar version, despite being a lower resolution.

Gauntlet 4 and Thunder Force 4 sounds better than most video game soundtracks and no PCM was used in either soundtrack. kzbin.info/aero/PLGFLxX_IcoV9oZO-ydxC_IUwc28QHzaPB ^^ Please check out this WIP playlist.

I know the story behind John Carmack not wanting to use the dedicated VDP 2 chip for the Saturn version, it could have come out so much better and would have probably trumped the PlayStation version. Console wise? PlayStation one is the best Doom hands down. It was Doom 1 and 2 combined and you also got ultimate Doom later on about a year or two later. Great soundtrack very ambient based and great little touches that make it just run very well. Of course it was based off the Jaguar code but that doesn't mean it lacks the action of the PC version because it is all there. Aside from just a few minor differences. I personally played doom shareware on a Pentium back in the day so I had probably the best experience but having soft hacked the PlayStation classic, one of my ROMs I uploaded to my USB was Doom. I'm extremely happy the PS1 version was not included in the terrible ports video. I can only wait for the awesome ports video! Excellent job Karl you are an absolute Legend! ( at least 50% of your legendary status is the fact that you, like me, also shred some guitar😉).

It's an interesting reversal - throughout the 1980's and in the very early 90's, consoles were more powerful than PC's (in fact, the PC was not really seen as a viable gaming platform at the time) and DOS versions of games were usually considered the inferior ones, but id Software turned this upside-down in 3 years - first with Commander Keen, then Wolfenstein 3D, and finally - Doom :)
