Speedway - Genie In A Bottle

Lively (and better IMHO) release of the Aguilera version of the song but more of a cover of ‘A Stroke of Genie-us’ (The Strokes vs Christina Aguilera mashup) by Freelance Hellraiser • The Strokes Vs Christi... . Speedway, from Scotland, fronted by Jill Jackson reached No.10 in the UK charts with this. They supported Bryan Adams on his autumn 2004 tour and did him proud. They also had an excellent album, Save Yourself, but sadly they split up in 2005 so that Jill could focus on her successful solo career.

I really don't know why they didn't become famous at least to a certain extent (Top 10 album and several more Top 10 singles). Maybe it's because their music wasn't played on TV and featured in advertisements. Still a pity. Their music was catchy.

I love Speedway (loved is perhaps a better term what with Jill and co' falling off the face of the earth) but I always thought that this was a bit 'too' similar to the Strokes vs Christina Aguilera mashup which came before it (it used to be on Q Music Channel loooooads back in't day). I agree completely- it's far better than the original. But I was at school with Jill's sister, so I suppose that makes me biased in her favour. However, it was obvious years ago that Jill had heaps of musical talent. Really nice person, too.

This is a rip off from a bootleg made by Freelance Hellraiser called ‘A Stroke Of Genie-us’ from around 2002, where he mashed The Strokes ‘Hard To Explain’ with Aguilera. As with some other songs (inc Sugababes Freak Like Me), the record labels basically remade the bootlegs with official clearance and discredited the original bootleggers. Pretty awful behaviour. Surprised no one has called this out. (Also the lead singer, Jill Jackson got absolutely owned by Mark Lamarr on Buzzcocks when this was released. She acted like an arse and got served.)

@Zoned 247 What on earth are you talking about? This recording was a blatant attempt to cash in on the Freelance Hellraiser's mash up of Genie In a Bottle (1999) and Hard to Explain (2001) by the Strokes in 2002. The mashup predated Speedway's cover (2003) by a year.
