For those looking for an inexpensive replacement for the stainless steel shaft of the sensor, I believe that a length of 3/32" stainless steel tig welding rod is just about the right diameter. One rod is a lifetime of shaft replacements, which are easy to swap out.

Looks like you're fixing the boat up there Dave. Is this a boat you've had for awhile or just bought it? Nice demonstration of how to replace the sensors along with good tips when reinstalling. Looking forward to your diesel maintenance videos. Take care...

+stuzman52 Thanks, Terry. Anybody who owns a boat know's there is no end to repair of some kind.

+Nick Wilson Thanks, Nick. They will come slowly, I hope, because the ever popular Yanmar engine is so reliable. I find the small diesel engine design to be elegantly simple.

Any chance you know the model of paddle wheel you have in this video?
@spelunkerd5 жыл бұрын
I must have written it down, somewhere. Next time go to the boat I'll look it up for you. Note that the NMEA 2000 speed sensors are completely different than these older NMEA 0183 devices, though it is possible the wheel is unchanged.

The flange that reduces the onflow of water on my airmar through hull transducer seems to not work as well as it should as water gushes up powerfully when I remove the transducer..any suggestions?
@spelunkerd6 жыл бұрын
It's not a critical element and some boats don't have it. It's just a flap of rubber fabric that is pushed shut like a one way flap valve by the pressure of the water. Next time you have the boat out of the water you can have a look, it could be held open by overgrowth of weed, barnacles, or other sea life. You can replace that component but I probably wouldn't bother if you can't fix it. Good luck!

You said the paddle wheel is cheap? I need one for a old analog gauge (prob 1960 or 1970's vintage) There are adds on your youtube page that show it at $200 or more, sometimes much more. Given you can get a gps, with a screen that shows current data too, for the same price or less, I don't think I will be replacing my paddle wheel. Probably safer to just glass over the hole anyway. Pity though, I did like to have it.
@spelunkerd7 жыл бұрын
Mine is an analog sensor, although yours may be a different vintage. Nevertheless, replacing the paddlewheel should work if your sensor is OK. When I was thinking I might have to replace the whole sensor, I contacted the manufacturer and they told me I could get the same analog sensor if I asked for it. Conveniently they both fit the same through-hull. As you know, the present generation are all digital, and my old 0183 communication protocol is obsolescent. However the signal I get from the sensor is a simple Hall effect on/off signal, so it's more basic data than the communication protocol used in new devices sold now. These paddlewheels are not as reliable or as accurate as the new ultrasonic sensors, but those devices require a larger through-hull and have a bigger footprint on the hull. Fortunately I got away without doing major surgery on the hull. Perhaps one day they will be able to make one that fits our old through-hulls, in which case I would consider replacing mine. As you know GPS can't isolate the contribution of current, instead giving an overall result combining current and vehicle speed vectors. For sailboat racers, it's useful to separate the two because it helps with decisions about the fastest pathway up a tidal channel. Thank you for watching!

Thats different from your normal repairs :-) So the paddle one measures the speed of the craft and i suppose converted to knotts. . Dont know how the depth sensor works, i guess its similar to sonar or electronic tape measure. a transmitter outputs a pulse of L.F energy into the water and it travels untill it hits the seabed and reflects back, something picks it up and calculates the delay on the two paths and since the speed/length of pulse travel is known then the distance is calculated. Possibly something like that lol, i said i didnt really know :-D Im sure you will correct my crude guess :-D
@spelunkerd8 жыл бұрын
+zx8401ztv Yes, mine is a typical ultrasonic design, as you say.
