This was a huge hit on the radio & very popular on the dance floor. That beat da da da da da - da was very catchy & driving & the song was very energetic. Thanks for your reaction!

I will definitely back you up on that claim. You have listened to so much amazing stuff, even though there is so much more. But if you take a look at that thumbnail, you'll see that that single came out in mono, not stereo, in 1966. But in 1966, there really wasn't the distinction of hard rock yet; that was just around the corner. But this was definitely heading in that direction, and it was heavy on the bluesy, soulful, energetic rock aspect. I can't remember if you have reacted to the band Traffic yet ? From the late 60s into the 1970s, a great band, with Steve Winwood on lead vocals, and here he is in a very successful band right before that, Spencer Davis Group, and this song was a big hit.

That Hammond B3 organ or whatever it is definitely does give off a gospel vibe for sure.

That's a very young Steve Winwood on vocals and the Hammond organ. He also wrote this song .

This sounds like the audio track of a live TV show in Finland. This was at the end of a tour and they were exhausted. You can hear the hoarseness in Steve's voice and the rest of the band skimped on the vocal backing. When Steve was 18 years old they had just released their new single and it was a flop. They were under pressure from management to come up with a new hit. They came up with the idea for this, fleshed it out, practiced it, made a rough transcription, and broke for lunch in less than an hour. They played it at a club gig that night and started recording it the next day.

Saw Steve Winwood a couple of times, and I actually got to see Mr. Spencer Davis himself play with the Grateful Dead, and "Gimme Some Lovin' " was the only song he sang. With The Dead as his backing band. Philadelphia, Pa. The Spectrum 9/22/87 if you want to look it up. It was "one of those nights".

There is, always has been, a cusp of what we call Rock n Roll & Rythm and Blues. As Chuck Berry eloquently conveyed in Roll Over Beethoven.

I Loved the Hammond Organ sound..played on a few, so distinct of a pitch/tone. None of the Keyboards I've owned can duplicate the sound 100%, But never bought one because you always needed a couple of guys to move 'em. As for Stevie, he may have only been a kid when he wrote this, but damned if he did'nt' have the chops/voice of a full-grown man already!

Great song.the lead singer is also a solo artist

The organ should be right out in front of the mix along with the voice and both seem muted. Weird. The lead singer was like 16 or 17 when this song was originally recorded, IIRC. He went on to have a career with Blind Faith, Traffic and as a solo artist (Steve Winwood). The band's song "I'm A Man" is excellent, and it has an epic extended live performance as a cover by Chicago. If you want to see a performance video of this song, I think there's one in black in white for this. Might be a better recording too. Steve Winwood is playing the organ, BTW.

I don't recognize this version. This seems like an alternate take from somewhere. This may be the Spencer Davis Group, but the organ is suppressed in the mix and there are some backing vocals missing. Still passable, but not as good as their original hit version.

I believe the version you call the "original hit version" is the US release. This release has more backing vocals, percussion and (especially) reverb which made the sound harsher and in your face. Not too sure why the US record company (United Artists) couldn't go with the original "original hit version" which was UK #2 at the time. So Ace has reacted to the UK version. However, it's not the same as the original single as the organ is way back in the mix. I even went to my copy of the Fontana 45, as seen at the start of this video, to check this (memory plays tricks after 57 years). I suspect Ace's reaction is to a poor upload of a UK stereo mix. Whichever version, a great track 💥

Thanks for clearing it up! I couldn't figure why there would be 2 versions, but your post explains it.

Seems identical to the version aired in my (Boston) part of the USA at the time, if memory (a weak implement) serves

I'd describe it as a rather good imitation of the Motown Sound by an English band full of white musicians. That would be at a time when many English musicians were copying the hell out of America's Blues greats (Yardbirds, Led Zepplin).

Why do so many young reactors get hung up on the genre? When these songs were released, it was just music, there were lots of different types of music that charted at the same time. Just enjoy the music and don't worry about categorizing it.

Classic! But this version lacks half the fire power of the single that zoomed up the charts back when. What happened to the backing vocalists accenting the chorus with lines of "Gimme, gimme, some lovin'"? Steve Winwood is legendary. He was still a teenager when the Spencer Davis Group recorded this. He also handled the vocals on the Blind Faith classic "Can't Find My Way Home", the Traffic classics "The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys" and "Freedom Rider". And he enjoyed great success as a solo artist in the eighties with "While You See a Chance" and "Higher Love" (featuring Chaka Kahn).
