That was a 17 year old Steve Winwood on the Hammond organ and lead vocals. Spot-on with the Ray Charles comparison-- He was one of Winwood's influences. If you look it up, there's another Spencer Davis performance, "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out", where young Steve Winwood sounds JUST like Ray Charles, it's uncanny...

The Spencer Davis Group was an important part of the British Invasion in the mid-60's. On 9/22/88 I was in The Spectrum in Philadelphia where the Grateful Dead were giving a concert and at the beginning of the second set Bob Weir stepped up to the microphone and says "I'd like to introduce Spencer Davis". We went a little crazy because we knew what was coming, Spencer singing "Gimme Some Lovin' " with The Dead as his backing band. It was astounding, and a great memory, so thanks for bringing it back. Saw Steve Winwood, the lead singer here, with The Dead a few times later on too, all good.

Great British rock band formed in 1963. They had some big hits such as "Somebody Help Me", "Keep On Running", "I'm A Man", "When I Come Home" etc. Steve Winwood & his brother started out in this group. He left in 1967 to form the rock band Traffic & a few years later Blind Faith.

Oh my god, I haven’t heard this in decades!! As teens we used to play a lot of British Invasion music, this group with Steve Winwood’s voice was pretty popular! Their song ‘I’m a Man’ was a hit as well. Thanks for a great song. For Black History Month, Queen Omega doing a dubplate of ‘Little Lion Sound’ is amazing, she will blow you away! Queen Omega is a reggae singer from Trinidad 🇹🇹 and is very popular worldwide. **💎Another choice you will like is Sam Moore ( of Sam & Dave) & Mavis Staples singing ‘Take Me To The River ‘at the Kennedy Center honouring Rev. Al Green ( as well Earth Wind & Fire 🔥 Jennifer Hudson performed)

Steve Winwood was a prodigy. He was performing and recording at 14 with that incredibly soulful voice! Love him!

Steve Winwood, the vocalist/keys is an icon. Joined this band at 14-15 yrs old. Was also hired as accompaniment as a teen for American Blues musicians when they toured the UK, where he's from. Has been in multiple bands including Blind Faith with Eric Clapton and Traffic, with which he was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. He also had a huge, Grammy award winning solo career, in the late 80s, did Higher Love with Chaka Khan, Roll With It, Valerie & a bunch of others. Jimi Hendrix asked him to play organ on his song Voodoo Chile & Jimi said he wanted to be in a band with Steve. He's still touring & still kills it.

The vocals weren’t “corrected” back then. They didn’t have autotune. When you hear his voice crack here, it’s because he’s been playing shows for months on end every night and the voice wears out no matter how good it is. The reason the vocal is better on the studio version is simply because he had time to rest and recuperate before they recorded the vocals in the studio.

Steve Winwood idolized the blues & jazz musicians, especially Ray Charles, and he has a similar voice to Ray. Steve is also very famous for piano/organ & excellent on guitar. So yes, he uses a lot of Blues & jazz inspiration with folk, pop & rock.

What does it matter if his voice breaks, what's your point? I think you interrupt and talk over the music too much, it's not personal. Where do you think white kids learned to play like this??
