I have trained along with several of your workouts. I like your approach. My impression is that you have a way of adding subtle details that other coaches miss. Things like " with a cry" or " keep it bratty" ....These different phonations for me personally seem to help strengthen and explore different areas of mask resonance. This gives me not only strength in my mix but allows for expression and tone beyond the note production itself in a relaxed way. I cannot express how much this seems to help. God bless you, brother

When he says now you should be in your head voice and I'm like "I've been in my head voice since the second scale". How can I change this?
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio3 жыл бұрын
From the first scale, the top one or two notes move into what is commonly the mix voice range for most men, while the lower notes are in chest. But as the scale modulates upward you should be allowing the notes in the middle of the scale to move over into mix voice and eventually head voice, as need be. There are a lot of possible reasons why you might be moving into falsetto or head voice early. Some could be health-related and others could be just developmental, but I don't feel comfortable guessing. If you don't already have a vocal coach, you can get help about this very issue by booking a 20-min trial lesson at my studio here: www.spencerwelch.com/ko-trial-lesson Or you can sign up for my new program SINGING IGNITION where I listen to your recorded voice and open up a singing program personalized for you: www.singingignition.com

So do you do this once a day, or can you do it more?. I always want to know what the end goal of these exercises are?. Is it to build the muscles of the throat responsible for mix voice, so it makes mix voice easier?
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio4 жыл бұрын
I suggest at once per day 4-6 days per week. But you could practice it more than once in a day if you leave a few hours in between. Morning and afternoon would be great. These exercises are designed to build and train efficient muscular and acoustic coordinations that encourage mix voice. Simultaneously, they discourage unwanted tension. As you recruit the right muscles, undesirable muscles are less likely to jump in and compensate.
@unfunnydave54853 жыл бұрын
A couple questions. Roughly how many days would it take to build a good mixed voice if I were to do this once a day everyday? Also should I swap out the same stuff for different vowel/constant sounds for them later and try to remove the dopiness after I get comfortable with the exercises with minimal breaks? I will hope that you answer these. It also may be a good idea to make a video on how to sound like Chris Cornel when you sing
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio3 жыл бұрын
Some people can find and build their mix voice in a few months and some take a few years. It really depends on where they start, how strong their bad habits are, how often they practice, how well they practice, how healthy their voice stays, and how much they train with an experienced vocal coach.

@SpencerWelchVocalStudio4 жыл бұрын
It's a great question, but unfortunately, there are too many variables to predict the answer: how experienced or inexperienced you are with mix voice, how often you practice, how perfectly you practice, how healthy your voice is, how many good and bad vocal habits you begin with, how much natural feel and intimacy you have with your voice, among other factors. My best advice is to begin where you are and enjoy the process, improving along the way, rather than trying to predict a finish line.

Thanks Spencer! I've really been enjoying your videos! I have adapted this and the head voice work out to my daily routine! The nay works for me like a charm without any issue no matter the time of the day or my physical state but for some reason the gou and mum can be a hit or miss. Often in the morning I have a ton of rasp even when I'm not pushing too hard but when I come back a few hours later or again in the evening or even in some cases even from the start of the day everything is a lot smoother and I have no issues whatsoever and feel very comfortable throughout the whole work out. I'm confused about how this works and why I'm struggling sometimes and smooth sailing other times. Is it a lack of control / understanding what I should be feeling out or could it be that I am doing something wrong or is it just the fact that my voice is not warmed up enough yet? Maybe this is a complicated question to answer but I thought I'd ask anyway :>.
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio4 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you're enjoying the videos, Calum! Unfortunately, it's impossible for me to say for sure what's going on in your voice without hearing you and working with you in a lesson. I would just be guessing. The most likely options are: a) you aren't warmed up when you wake up. The muscles in your larynx have gone lax as you slept and need to be activated once you wake up to build tonicity and fine control or... b) you have some sort of vocal health issue like acid reflux or dust mite allergy that beats up your voice while you sleep AND/OR... c) you lack the automatized coordination to efficiently close and vibrate your vocal cords on back vowels like OU and UH. It could be one or a few of those issues all at once. If you continue to struggle with this issue, I suggest you get checked by an ENT doctor for potential vocal health issues that might be avoidable. The rest of these options are only alleviated through practice and proper vocal hygiene. You can always get more personalized advice by booking an online trial lesson at my studio here: spencerwelch.com/ko-trial-lesson All the best!

You are welcome! When you practice these exercises, aim to sing them at a medium volume from low to high notes. So try not to get louder as you go higher or breathier. Remember that full voice is not just your chest voice. It is chest voice transitioning to mix voice transitioning to head voice as you ascend. Listen to my demonstrations for direction. That being said, it is common for the higher notes to start out a little lighter and "hooty" at first, because they are undeveloped. It's ok to begin this way, but slowly aim for them to reach that medium volume that your lower notes are starting at.

Hey Spencer, I’ve been doing these exercises and head voice exercises for maybe 2 months, but there is not that much of an improvement. My voice sounds very airy. And when I try to sing a song, I always have to do these warmups. Unlike before puberty where I could just sing a song from start to finish with no struggle (especially Bruno Mars songs). But I also think it’s because my voice started changing in August of last year. I’m 15 at the moment and I remember you saying somewhere that it takes years for the teenage voice to develop. What do I sing for now then? Do I just lower the key? I can sing songs in lower keys but it just doesn’t hit the same as the original key if you get what I mean.
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, if you are six months into your voice change, it doesn't surprise me that your voice is still airy and adjusting to its new size. I've seen some guys take 6 months to a year to start seeing some progress, and after that, if you are getting the right training and feedback, things slowly start to get easier. It's about a 10-year process for the male voice to completely settle, which doesn't mean you can't build your mix voice before that. It just means it takes patience. What other artists other than Bruno Mars do you like? You can practice scales that go up into your high register, but you will definitely need to sing in lower keys for a while.

@@SpencerWelchVocalStudio Oh wow, 10 years? That’s a very long process. I enjoy Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Steve Perry, Freddie Mercury, Sam Smith, Charlie Puth, and Ne-Yo. They all sing in high registers though. So usually I’ve been singing a lot of John Mayer because he sings with a low chest voice and because he uses falsetto, which prevents me from straining my voice.

I'm a tenor with more shouty tendencies in my speech than natural speaking and a chesty belting voice far stronger than the current mixed voice I have right now. Even though I was able to follow along with every exercise properly, is it normal considering my vocal tendencies to have a passagio area that is really quiet?

Often when our muscles have memorized approaching middle notes by pulling up chest, it's hard train them to do something opposite like mixing. I'd have to hear you to know for sure, but you might have to practice mixing twice as much as pulling chest to see things swing in the mix direction and build up that coordination.

how long to get mixvoice? if practice everyday sir??
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio3 жыл бұрын
Everybody is different so there isn't one answer for how long it would take. It depends on that person's level of experience, the amount and severity of their bad vocal habits, and the quality of vocal education they are receiving. Some students are able to develop some mix voice within a few lessons with me and others take years. It's important to focus on the process rather than the end product, and continually aim to improve.

I understand the merit and concept of these exercises, but fail to see how you move from doing these to actually creating a smooth, consistent sound without a break/flip. If I keep doing them the same, repeatedly, surely nothing will change? (Nothing has changed after weeks and weeks of practise.)
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio3 жыл бұрын
So to be clear, are you saying you have practiced along with this workout video almost every day for several weeks, and nothing has changed? KZbin is an imperfect medium for voice training because a video can't listen to you and give you feedback. Because I haven't heard you or worked with you in a lesson, here are a couple scenarios that could be possible if you practice this workout for several weeks: a) these exercises are NOT what you need at this point in your singing development. Different singers have different (sometimes opposite) tendencies and habits, and so they may need different (even opposite) exercises. You might need different exercises that address your particular needs at this time. An experienced vocal coach could help assess your voice and tailor the right exercises for your vocal challenges. b) these exercises ARE what you need, but you are practicing them incorrectly. Exercises "tend to do" something, but they aren't guaranteed to do it. How you practice matters as much as what you practice. c) these exercises ARE what you need, and they ARE working, but how they are changing your voice is not what you expected. If you haven't experienced mixed voice before, you might not recognize the feeling or sound of it in its infancy. d) these exercises perhaps don't work, as you suggested. To get personal, I took voice lessons for 10 years with different teachers and techniques and never developed a connected mix voice. It was frustrating. I only learned how to mix with no breaks when I finally studied this technique. Over the last 25 years, I've taught these kinds of exercises to thousands of students on six continents, and I have seen them work (when applied and practiced properly) faster than anything else I've ever taught. I've also been a master teacher for two international teacher training organizations, and have trained hundreds of teachers in over 30 countries to teach this. This stuff works! Tell me about you and what you struggle with in your voice? How old are you? How long have you been singing? Have you taken singing lessons or are only self-taught? Perhaps I can help.
@Roksteddie243 жыл бұрын
@@SpencerWelchVocalStudio Firstly, I REALLY appreciate the fact that you've taken time out to engage with me - I'm very grateful. I'm a professional musical theatre actor and also sing soul/pop. I've sung all my life and it's my livelihood. BUT I'm a bass-baritone which has caused me endless frustration and restriction for 20 years (I'm 37). Perhaps I just need to have patience and trust the process. I'm afraid that I've sung in one was for so many years that trying to learn a new approach will be impossible. But I'm also confident that if I'm ever to get close to the type of voice I want, it's through learning to mix. It's just so hard. I've been practising religiously 4/5 times a day with no change. So I just wondered if I was meant to be actively trying to 'do' something to effect change or just let the changes occur without any real 'interference' from me, so long as I stick to the exercises?
@SpencerWelchVocalStudio3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for giving me more insight into your history as a singer. Unfortunately, I'm limited in the advice I can give without hearing you and working with you in a lesson. However, what does stand out is your voice type. If you truly are a bass/baritone, then there is the possibility that your mix needs to start earlier/lower than most men's. The majority of male voices are some kind of tenor, which includes baritones. As a result, their first passage/bridge/passaggio/mix usually begins around Eb or E4 and finishes around G4. However, if you truly are a bass/baritone (which is fairly rare), you might be looking at a first passage that sits in the A3-C4 range. If you are practicing along with this video, the starting and ending pitch range is built for baritones/tenors, which might explain why don't feel you get very far practicing along to it. Again, I would have to work with you in a lesson to know, but the range of your exercises and the approach may have to be modified. In general, heavier voices do find it harder to thin out into a mix and head voice because there is SOOO much to thin, but when they finally do, they eventually will have a bigger sound due to a bigger instrument.
@Roksteddie243 жыл бұрын
@@SpencerWelchVocalStudio It's interesting that I may not be a true bass-baritone. I can certainly sing lower and with more resonance down there than most of my contemporaries. Perhaps that's because I haven't really had any other choice. But at the same time my falsetto is crazy good and extends super high. I'm finding my voice wants to shift gear around the C/Csharp point (attempting a D without any sort of push or extra muscle recruitment is very challenging). Anyway I did look at your website with a view to having a session with you but it didn't look like you had ANY availability in the next 2 years!!! Perhaps I was doing it wrong?
