Maybe you can have gypsum applied to the clay paddocks to help break it down into better soil over time... maybe there are some cover crops you can plant and till under in dry lots while the little ponies are out to pasture in summer. Possibly fix that clay up so it's not so muddy... maybe till in some sand idk

Gaston is just a well-made horse. He's solidly built, nicely conformed, and has good manners. Sounds like a dream horse to me.

The fact that you have one of these rare horses and you are showcasing him makes my heart feel so full as a Canadian. These light draft horses were actually a critical breed during the American Civil War as they make fantastic cavalry horses with their wonderful strength and stamina. They are always a solid colour (generally black like Gaston but also occasionally bay, brown and chestnut, rarely cream or palomino,) and like percherons they usually don't have any white markings; I believe that just a star is allowed. ⚠️*And NO he is NOT a draft cross - Canadians are a purebred light draft breed, PLEASE do NOT call him a cross! I repeat: Canadians are a PUREBRED light draft breed!!*⚠️ Other light draft breeds include the Norwegian Fjord and the Morgan (which Canadians/Cheval Canadiennes contributed to - they are a VERY old all around farm Canadian horse breed with ancestral royal roots in France!)

The Finnhorse is more analogous to the Canadian in terms of size/mass, plus it's used in both harness racing and riding but mostly former as Light Drafts aren't considered refined enough for classical English competitions.

The Legend of the Canadian Horse: Genetic Diversity and Breed Origin - Oxford Academic "The Canadian breed of horse invokes a fascinating chapter of North American history and as such it is now a heritage breed and the national horse of Canada. The aims of this study were to determine the level of genetic diversity in the Canadian, investigate the possible foundation breeds and the role it had in the development of the US horse breeds, such as Morgan Horse. We tested a total of 981 horses by using 15 microsatellite markers. We found that Canadian horses have high values of genetic diversity indices and show no evidence of a serious loss of genetic diversity and the inbreeding coefficient was not significantly different from zero. Belgian, Percheron, Breton and Dales Pony, unlike the light French horses, may have common ancestries with the Canadian and could be important founders. However, the Shire and Clydesdale influenced the Canadian to a lesser extent than French and Belgian draft breeds. Furthermore, our finding indicated that there was no evidence of a clear relationship between Canadian and Oriental or Iberian breeds. Also, the Canadian likely contributed to the early development of the Morgan. Finally, these findings support the ancient legends of the Canadian Horse as North America’s first equine breed and the foundation bloodstock to many American breeds and may help in the management and breeding program of this outstanding breed in North America."

"Gentleman Gaston" is a beautiful horse. And anyone who has chased a horse around a pasture will appreciate that your horses don't run away from you! The Bridle is very cool. He sure is a nice gentleman. So much personality too. I am 5' also and 16h was about my limit! With very short legs I could only comfortably ride a tall horse if it was also narrow but have always preferred a shorter, slightly stockier type. Riding a tall horse in an arena in particular is more difficult for cantering because of their long stride. My last horse was a QH mare. She'd been ridden but out in a field for 2 yrs. It does take so much time to work through issues and train. I think it was 2 yrs before she would put her head in my arms and relax. Such a good feeling to get there though! It's really a labor of love - and that love is returned, which makes it all worthwhile.

The “Canadian Horse” is a heritage breed from Quebec Canada as opposed to just a horse from Canada in case some viewers are unfamiliar with the breed. Shea you are very familiar with this sturdy,intelligent draft cross with origins to the late 1600’s . Thank you for showcasing him so well. He is magnificent.

I loved grooming my beautiful boy... he would nibble at my backside playfully when I cleaned his front feet. I talked to him non-stop ... I can't... I'm gonna cry again. After I sold him (for $$$ reasons) I went to a tea leaf reader with some coworkers. The woman kept shifting the cup as she looked into it. 'This is going to sound strange, but do you know a horse?' I said yes. 'Cuz he's thinking about you.' I will never forget her words. This was more than 35 years ago. I hope he's waiting for me in Heaven cause I'd love to groom him again and wander the forested trails on Joker's Hill... Enjoy them while you can is great advice.

Gaston the Magnificent! He's an absolute dream and a kind boy who you have worked with a helluva lot. You brought out the sweet, willing, smart boy he is and it shows. His coat gleams and he's playful, happy and tries his best. Gaston is one of my favourites. I wish I could give him a hug as I've been in hospital and possibly have ovarian cancer. Your videos have helped keep me calm through it and the blood test pointing at high markers for cancer. Big hugs to Gaston.❤
