Mark Ironside had one of the greatest motors of all time. His conditioning routine was truly superior.

Schmidt had a torn knee ligament going into nationals that year. He was basically wrestling on one leg which might explain some of that. I would know because unfortunately I was wrestling with him during training when he blew the knee. :(

I didn't realize that & I blame that on how secretive wrestling is when it comes to injuries. I can think of over a dozen wrestlers who I can only imagine were injured, but we never found out exactly what was wrong because no one would tell us. You only know if you're "in"

Love watching Ironside matches. Dude had a motor on him and was one of the premier come from behind wrestlers of all time.

Schmidt was a fucking king goddam badass - anybody who's never wrestled with a broken/bandaged fucking nose can only half appreciate it

What year was this match?

Wrestling sure is a funny Sport. Jeff McGuinnes(sorry about the misspelling) goes on to win the NCAA title, and Schmidt, finishes 7th. I dare not say anyone who places and makes AA status at the NCAA tournament, had a bad performance, but he didn't go in their to finish 7th either.

Sometimes one bad match can turn into two bad matches any given match someone can surprise you especially at that level
