One big myth in spey casting is that you must accelerate into a low. flat high speed V loop to create a high line speed spey Cast. There are two critical elements of a Healthy D loop. Zero Slack and Tension. No more power is necessary in the sweep than to create a tensioned D loop completely void of slack. After a gentle sweep where the rod tip travels in an incline path , (line follows the rod tip path) The lift must not be to high or low but moderate and slow, and the path of the rod tip should not dip down too abruptly or the results will be a crashed anchor
the beginning of the sweep must be slow and remain so throughout, and must absolutely travel in an incline path after passing the castors position. The bottom leg of the D loop floats down by way of gravity, giving the caster plenty of time to raise the elbows and prepare for the forward cast. As the anchor touches down lightly the forward cast is applied at just the right time. Top early and the line will slip, blowing the anchor. If the forward cast is applied too late the line will stick and too much power will need to be applied to the forward cast. A light, straight anchor, placed slightly forward of the caster not further than a rod tip off to the side of the caster, should produce just enough grip on the water that the forward cast alone will load the rod and create high line speed. There is no need to overpower the sweep. A properly tensioned D loop that floats down to the water's surface is sufficient to create high linespeeds. Tight lines my friends!

Initially, I was taught the lift and turn to the anchor somehow magically loads the rod and translates power to the forward cast. What you dispel here is that poor technique. I was in the dark. The set up merely positions the anchor for the key position cast. NO amount of power in the set up will translate into forward cast energy in a 180 degree angle change. I learned the hard way, until my proficient casting friend fished below me and I SAW - then replicated - his s l o w lift and turn. I had to change my thinking from “forward cast” to “long soft anchor” in order to cast well, and it integrated into all 5 expressions of my Spey cast. Thanks Tim. Of all your videos for beginners, I think this is the most critical one to emphasize.

Hello from Sweden 🇸🇪 I'm borne in scandi land. And I'm personal know Göran Andersson I meet him first time at our river back in 1980s. I now use my skagit 710gr to my 15.3' 10/11# and I'm use those multi tips from 12-20' and I'm borne whit full lines DT 10-12 was common for as I'm grow up. Now I fish a fast short stroke rod and it's made for overhand casting. So to load it deeper I must go up in line. I'm whit you about the rodtip must sweep parallel after the lift important if you wish a sharp loop and I do it in one motion! So key is slow lift swing parallel and go back whit rodtip if you planning shoot long distance! I use flat mono shootingline. Like the throughs because this is where most people do miss. Best regards Bjorn

Thank you Bjorn I appreciate you weighing in from Scandi land! That makes me very happy. Very exciting to hear what you have used in the past and what you now use. I'll bet that 710 Skagit flies a mile on that 15'3" 10/11 with a sharp loop and no doubt a strong underhand pull! Tight lines Bjorn!!!

@@LineSpeedJediTimRawlins Oh my pleasure to respond! What most people dont talk about in modern spey casting is your forward hand mostly give the angel and power comes from bottom hand ! Göran Andersson did invent this cast many years ago. When I first meet him it was 1980 at river bank at our big river Älvkarleby it's one of our biggest who go across the hole country and it is several hundred yards wide for most part. He used a fiberglass rod 14-15' and a half Scientific anglers DT12 fast sinking as those old was 82' as full line it sure was 41 😊 as shootingline he had a nylon 25lbs fishing line that was back the days before we had all those options we offered to day. Two good shootingline I try out is OPST Laser line 35lbs and Vision Catapult 50lbs and type of rod make the choice of shootingline and if there is Salmon season or trout/sea one brown season. Our trout get past 25lbs mark the biggest is nearly 35lbs that's a big sea one brown. So switch rods is used in the summer when low water is the fact and small flys we tie those on 4-1# carp hooks who is stronger then standard salmon hooks in that size. I do a full 50 yards shootingline plus head and leader who for most is 15' so my longest cast touching the 210' mark and as it a open river there some days many say less good caster out there! They spoke the fish and make it move out of reach for them who for most get about a 100' out. So key is cast far beyond that to fish productive water and where I found the 710 and even my 770gr do this job. And to achieve that distance you got to have a good D loop and as those heads are so short it becomes more as a V loop because I need sweep pretty low and absolutely parallel! And stroke must be short if not loop opens up and you lose distance for sure! Same as I'm single handed fish the river I use a 10' Hardy rod and a short 400gr head and it shoot as a rocket to even its lighter rod fun hook a fish of 20lbs on this rod. In my beginning I used DT lines still do because a well done speycast whit a full line fish the pool in different speed and angel you present your fly to the fish. For most I'm use my Hardy favourite 16' or my UK made Black shadow spey casting special who is 15.6' 10/11# class. I buy a line from UK its head is 60' long so it's a long belly line. This is what I'm use. Fast rods at scandi casting! Progressive rods at old spey casting! Best regards from Sweden 🇸🇪 who is part of Scandinavia.

I truly appreciate all the lessons and information you provide on your channel.I have been single hand casting for over 20 yrs and decided the two hand rods looked fun and challenging.Having issues adapting currently using a echo Tr2 3 weight trout Spey with a Opst commando head and sink tip .Would you recommend this line for a beginner? Would there be another set up that would work better? Having trouble getting nice right loops I have a fishable cast bit really want to improve it thanks for all you do
@LineSpeedJediTimRawlins
@LineSpeedJediTimRawlins 3 жыл бұрын
I would guess that would be a good rod and line combo. The OPST heads are great. Just make sure you are not trying to cas a sink tip that is too heavy or a fly too large. Set yourself up for success. Practice is the key. Video yourself or have somebody watch you and tell you what is going on. Or take a lesson if available. If not. Stand in one place and practice your favorite cast, over and over until you improve.

Tough question! I think its best to start with your 9’ 5 weight fly rod, a Scientific Angler Spey light Scandi line, your basic 9’ tapered fly line leader, and a wooly bugger or similar. No need to buy a two hander yet! See if you like it. I’m lost too when it comes to buying one. My favorite is the G Loomis 11 11 short Spey, but its 600 bucks! UPdate! My friend has a cheapie Aventic or max catch from eBay and loves it! Good way to go two handed and not break the bank until you know you love it!
