Superb video series, thank you! Kerson, would it be possible to do a close-up video of your right hand, esp. a view from the frog up? It seems you often hold the bow almost solely with thumb and middle finger, the other three fingers hardly touching the bow at all in your e.g. spiccato, sautillé and staccato.

Hi Kerson, I notice that you do something similar to what Vengerov, Zukerman, and Ziyu He do, in that when you played the 3rd finger on the A string, your left index was propped up and not relaxed. At first I used to think this was strange when Zukerman would do that, but then I realized this extra tension helps my vibrato get way juicier. I can't explain why it helps, and I also have never heard teachers tell their students to purposely tense their indexes when using the 3rd of 4th finger, but I think it's good tension and a pretty unexplored/unknown phenomenon. What are your thoughts?

I hope someone experienced in violin playing will answer you but I definitely agree with your opinion speaking from sport/motion field. For example when it comes to need to use maximum power then there is need to tense not just main and secondary muscle groups directly involved to the action but also those which are “linked” through the brain/body together. If I want to apply maximum grip power in right hand then it would be beneficial to tense also the abs, buttocks, lats and even the left hand into the tight fist and thats just a very short describing for example of max right hand grip power. In motions where I need more fluidness, be more relaxed but maintain or apply dynamic power it´s quite the same just in lesser degree and in dynamical changes. For example in fencing my hand holding the sword apply most grip power to the pinky and ring finger the middle finger has medium power and point finger with thumb are not tensed to the max neither relaxed completely they need to stay in dynamic state of tensiness to be used in various actions. I hope it helps a little. Always think like the whole body even when there is just a small motion, everything is linked together either by body like joints, muscles and connective tissue across them or by how does the brain works. It´s very good to has the ability to be able isolate and control separate muscles but to achieve perfection in motions it´s also necessary to think whole body and mind as a one unit. I hope my english and opinion makes sense. Believe in what feels naturaly, humans are not robots.

I actually believe that this particular thing is a release of tension, not intentional tension to add flavour to vibrato. Start with your left hand palm facing towards you. Find the ligament of your wrist (if you flex and tense your wrist it should become quite an obvious line) and place one finger of your right hand to the left of it and two fingers on the right side of it. Move these fingers about 2cm below the wrist joint. Now lower your left hand third and fourth finger as though you were playing notes. Then lower your first finger as well; you should feel a ligament tense up, or at least I do. Why it happens? I have no idea. But perhaps actively releasing the first finger tension in this way frees up the wrist joint to make a better vibrato.

Mabie Todd with sautille, the bow never actually leaves the string like in spiccato. Sautille is a smaller and less controlled motion where the stick itself bounces but the hair remains on the string. This is because sautille is a much quicker stroke.
