You're expected to ride at the same standard on an A2 test as the A (full) test the only difference is that you do the A2 on a less powerful bike. I can't think of any situation you would use more than 48 bhp on the test. A2 should automatically upgrade to the full licence after a year or two.

Agreed A2 is more than enough power even for heavier bikes that are restricted. It just sucks that its yet another test to do to get to full A Licence. The most fun you can have on bikes is when you have lower bhp that way you can ride them properly and enjoy the roads without doing stupid speeds. Worst thing about most 1000+cc bikes is having to constantly keep your throttle down since 1mm twist is difference between 70 and 100 in almost any gear.

I still love my 125 Varadero but a thousand miles in and I am already considering a big bore conversion. I am however too green to have anything bigger yet because I am still occasionally an inept danger to myself! Part of me (the diesel driver part mainly) does struggle with cruising at 9k revs😳😬😑. I love the 100mpg though as it makes going out for an entirely pointless evening drive guilt free! As a teenager on an SS50 the height of my ambition was a 250 superdream and I still reckoned it is enough for cruising. Incidentally, I am really loving the camaraderie of the bike community with all the nods and waves! Proper heartwarming!

I tried a 390 duke and I can say these A2 bikes are great. When I passed my test it was still 33bhp for 2 years. I got a GSX 600 f and that was super fun as it makes all the power up top in the rev range or you could plod along. I never felt the need to have more power. The problem is as you feel more comfortable with power you want more and more and a lot of people don't have the skill to match a 1000cc. With 125's and smaller bikes you can ride them on the limit which in my opinion is more fun. I no longer ride after a crash but have good memories and I constantly battle with the idea of getting back on.

I've been on a restricted license for almost 4 years now (partially because lessons here in Israel cost quite a bit and I'm in school), and have been riding an old GS500 for about 3 years and over 50K KM. Honestly the only issues I have is that it's a bit cramped for my size (1.88m/6ft2), and chugs oil at high speeds because it's air cooled. Other than that? Enough power for everything I need, and I love the fact you can ride it to the redline on winding roads and still be in control of the bike, and not be scared every time you open the throttle a bit too much. Took a CBR650 for a spin and that thing just felt so relaxed going 130 kph in 4th...man, how fast do you need to push this thing to have fun? In the city it feels like you're not utilizing a quarter of what the bike has to offer, going maybe to 2nd...and that bike has like 90 bhp, can't imagine what 150 bhp must feel like.

People always want more. Grass is greener and such. I have a YBR125 which cruises at 40-60mph, depending wind direction and incline/decline. I always say "wish I had something that would cruise at 80, i'd be set" but I know that like everyone else the honeymoon period will wear off and I'll seek something more powerful. Happened a month after I got my scooter and then shortly after I upgraded to the YBR. My resolution? Just be happy with what you've got, life is a lot better with the bike you got than without one.

Before doing my A2 I was considering just waiting until I'm 24 and doing my A license but all my friends were selling their 125's and going for their tests so I thought I might as well. At first I was like well this is going to suck having a restrictor on a bigger bike but tbh it's more than enough power for me after being on a 125 for 4 years straight. Every time I go out my bike always makes me smile, has enough power to overtake, sit at legal speed limits without the bike sounding like a dying cat 😂 just everything about it makes it worth it, sure it's a pain having to do the same test once you move onto your A license but I personally think it's worth it. In a way I agree with the A2 because it's basically getting you use to the power and working your way up instead of just jumping straight on a bike that you probably cant even handle yet. So yeah the A2 is actually more than enough really, I'm happy with it.

I got myA2 right after they changed the laws on the 2 year auto unrestriction xD. But yeah makes more sense to do a progression test moving from A to A2, instead of Mod1 & Mod2 again. Me on my heavy lexmoto can barely go 55 for long times. I couldn't agree with you more, you're very sensible. I'm an older guy and only did the A1 in 2016. I started doing part time Deliveroo in 2018, year or to later I added Uber and JE. I've ridden 80,000 + miles over a primavera and SH125i. Few weeks ago I did my A2 cause I didn't want to redo the theory test and the rules didn't allow me to go to A, which I think is pathetic. The examiner said I ride really well. I'd like to be a part time bike courier which I think would still require an A licence, even though I think the CB500x or a limited NC750x would do a great job. I think A2 to A should be an automatic upgrade based on riding experience. This has been discussed, perhaps you should consider starting a petition. If your subs sign and you get other channels involved it could happen.
@Korsfestelse5 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on bike type too. I'm on an A2 (can upgrade in the new year) and ride a VT750C, which have been detuned in manufacture to meet the 45bhp limit for years. Now, I've done lots of riding on all sorts of roads (long-distance and short commutes) and it's adequate for both, as well as being good for fuel efficiency (60mpg on average for me), but for a cruiser it is underpowered. However, it is hellishly easy to ride, whether you've touched a cruiser before or not. It's a lot less risky to you and your license than, say, a VTX1800 which can beat up even experienced riders. So despite wanting to sit in lower revs, I can sit fully loaded at 80mph with another 15 to go, which isn't bad for a 250kg 750cc underpowered cruiser!

Most A2 Bikes if you really care about being a speed freak so much will squash the standard in speed and agility. Problem is no matter how powerful the bike is the Laws of the road stay the same and Traffic still exists. Iv'e seen a few wanna be racer boys wreck 1000cc bikes because they cared only about speed and thought it would help them on the traffic packed roads. I would Say ride into your own ability with the bike powerful and Licence. But full A class bikes do not thrive well in the modern day traffic. Don't get me wrong the government's retest for a full licence is just to scam money out of people, because if it really was just about safety they would just offer a cheaper course where for a day or two even a week you are taught about the A class and how to handle it kind of like a CBT lesson but for the biggest bikes. But instead they want to charge you twice for two tests each with the chance of failure. People who moan they can't go fast enough on there A2 bikes annoy me sometimes because you have to wonder why they want that speed, i mean the speed limit is 70 and A2 hit that fairly easily plus extra for overtaking and evasive manoeuvres. Most people who moan about the A2 only seem to care about Speed i tend to found which as i said troubles me.

Riding a Honda for the first time, with my fat fingers, I clipped the horn with my thumb tip most of the time. It took me 6 months to get used to that. Swapping the position sounds like a brilliant idea, wish mine had that (not that I need it anymore). But yeah, couldn't agree more. I mean, if you're taking a pillion, and/or you're lugging a ton of gear. Then the bigger the engine, the better. Because it'll cope better with the increased load and drag. But if it's just you, A2 should be plenty, even on long rides tbh. "The love of a bike, comes from the mods. I think enough is hard to quantify. I agree What is enough for one person may not be enough for others. An A2 bike is enough for bimbling and commuting on and exploring at the weekend. However if your say riding a lot with a pillion or touring with camping kit then no I would say it may not be enough. Its doable as many have proved but It’s nice to have to bit more on tap if your fully laden. Personally I find 650cc enough for me. My last four bikes have been 650’s. I’ve ridden more powerful bikes but I prefer 650’s. They have enough power for overtaking while two up or fully laden.

I think we should be able to take a single test but choose what category bike to do it on (A1, A2, or A) and be restricted to the category bike you passed the test on, then you should be able to do a CBT style test on a bigger bike to upgrade to a higher category to prove you can handle the bigger bike. I think that would be ideal because riders should be able to progress power in their own time, not what the government thinks is suitable, because we all learn at different rates than others

I think people worry about 48hp being a little amount because they're constantly comparing A2 bikes to R1s and so forth. In my opinion why do you need a bike or car that does more then 100mph? 80/90mph is enough for a safe overtake on the motorway.

Wait a second! You would only be looking at doing the A1 if you ever only want to ride a 125cc. No not do the A1 if you want a larger bike in the end.

Very much agree! I passed my Direct access a few months ago and went for a Benelli TRK 502, at the top end of A2 and it's perfectly fine for anything i'll ever need it for. And tbh, im not sure i'd feel confident jumping from a 125 to a 1000CC.

My other half only rides really for fun, occasionally to get to work, but she’s only got an a2, she has a restricted sv650 and a Honda shadow 600, she’s not really interested in ‘more’ and the Sv is still quick af with the restrictor

As somebody in the US, A2 sounds like it's enough, 50hp is enough. The sportster 883 (one of HD's best selling bikes) only makes about 50hp, and people ride those all over the US, which is much more spread out and hwy intensive than the UK, and they do it without issues. A guy at my previous job put 125k on his 883. So yeah, they are definitely enough. They're not "get yourself in lots of trouble" kind of power, but they're enough power to keep up with traffic FOR SURE and enough to have fun with in the canyons and what-not.

I am 40 years old been a dream to ride a motorbike since a kid but all though confident in my own ability to be cautious always been put off by the fact I could be killed by almost anything else on the road. But now I am just going to go for it and agree pretty much an A2 is good enough for me but at the same time the cost of the A2 I may as well just go for full license and then not have to worry about every time i feel I want to buy a bike and checking if i can legally ride it or not.

I have a 'restricted' 99' SV650 ;) Only pay £270 a year for insurance atm and I'm 20. I find the whole A license stupid if you've done the A2. When I did my A2, the people were doing their full A license with me, on the exact same bike, an MT07, but unrestricted. On those bikes, the restriction is only really there at the top end anyways, so there's pretty much no difference.

the only Gripe i have is that if youre Upgrading from the A2 to the A Licence there should be another way to do it, There was Talk of a Day Course, but also the Kick in the Teeth is that you then have to Fork out another £400-£6/700 to Upgrade, because i ride Long Distance to Work, i do need to Upgrade from the A2, (trust me wasnt my plan, But Life Decided to throw me a Curveball) but its just a case of Saving that money to do so. so for Some its Enough, or as Spicy said, even a 125 is Enough, but i guess it just comes down to Personal preference.
@OldManTony5 жыл бұрын
The A2 is plenty, especially if you have just moved up from a 125. When I rode a 125 back in the 70s I used to go everywhere on it and 100 mile or more trips two up were not an issue, and A2 bike would have been pure luxury! My Mrs drives a Citroen C1 with about 60HP for an 800 kg car. I’ve been driving it around for a couple of days, it was OK when I got into that rhythm!

I've got my mod 1 in the next few days for the A2 I think it's enough and is a good balance of practicality and fun. It's just the cost of then having to re take the test for the unrestricted license.

I've been on an A2 for 5 years, I've ridden to Scotland from Birmingham, done a 1500 mile week tour of the north of England all on a pretty heavy xj600s restricted, it's fine, and on a twisty road you more than keep up with people on bigger bikes That being said I'm doing my full license at the moment, as I do want to step up to something bigger

I have full licence and was on a CBR600, crashed it & wrote it off. Now am on CBR500R and it’s a brilliant brilliant bike. Can’t fault it at all, handles well, comfy all day, great on fuel AND for the A2 doubters it will out-accelerate most standard cars, you can overtake with ease and do triple digit speeds so.....
@helzbelz28182 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I did some training on a A licence bike and it was great i handled it just fine etc but really heavy and im a weak 5’5’ girlie and to be honest prefer the small engined bikes as it gives me more confidence in all areas of the riding. I was a bit worried to begin with that if i restricted myself i wouldnt be able to do longer distances but i think from watching the travellers vloggers on youtube in the wildest places on no more that 500cc bikes and smaller right down to 125cc and even scooters i think on an A2 you have nothing to feel hard done by about. For me its all about the ride not how fast i get there
@petethompson12823 жыл бұрын
Im tempted just to do the A2 test, as I only ever feel like trundling around on a 300cc, or under 47hp bike anyway. The roads arent fast enough for anything more, and i wont track day. The new A2 test allows 250cc which im used to (big 125) so it would be even easier to pass
@spicy1103 жыл бұрын
You could...but, if you are over 24 I would just do the A. It's the same tests at the same cost on the same bikes (pretty much on the test you would never feel the power difference) Not many schools will have 250cc bikes for training yet. Add on I believe insurance would be cheaper on a full licence I really do not know a good reason not to do the full A. Clearly up to you what you do just saying I wouldn't limit myself for no reason. Good luck what ever way you go 🙂👍

@benl70705 жыл бұрын
For someone like myself the A2 is fine I go down lots of lanes and single track roads and coastal roads and commuting so a smaller displacement bike is actually desired as usually they are lighter and they're sort of zippy, on a litre bike the sort of riding I do I'd only need 2 gears ha ha ha so a 300 hundred 400 hundred single is great its light enough and nimble enough to do the bouncy twisty stuff while being a 400 its gonna be fine for doing longer motorway trips.

Great video. I've been contemplating this myself lately. I haven't got a bike licence but want to. I'm looking at a duke 390 for my first bike and it falls into A2 category. However I've heard the full licence is just the same as A2 but on a bigger bike? That's where I'm torn. However I'll still be going for the Duke so might do A2 then just get some experience before moving up.

And that horn thing reminds me of jumping on my bullet with the gear lever and rear brake swapped round 😂

I bet that is because it's a big single. Most people who come from sport bikes and ride my DRZ 440 also stall it a few times. Just have to get the feel for it.
@Drunken_Hamster5 жыл бұрын
I think the A1 and A2 and all that are not well thought out. It's either an outright displacement restriction, or an arbitrary HP restriction. HP means just about nothing. It torque over time. It's that torque that will get you into trouble. And, also, the heavier a bike, the more torque and power it needs to get it to do the same thing a lighter bike will do. Therefore, for BOTH A1 and A2, it should be some form of torque to weight ratio. Probably something like a 400lb curb weight bike can only make 30 lb-ft of torque for A2.
@safetyfirst59175 жыл бұрын
I've been all over the lake district and yorkshire with my 125, because I don't need motorways to get to those places. An A2 bike would be more than enough for me, because I'm guessing you still get much better fuel economy than the average car.

I have a problem, I was originally interested to purchase a CBR 500R because it falls into the A2 category, but after asking a few dealers about it, most of those I approached now only have 650's. But they said it could still fall into the A2 category if the power output is tuned down. What does that mean? Im worried that theyre only interested in making a sale, and I wouldnt want to get into trouble due to my license restriction...
@spicy1104 жыл бұрын
Basically it is restricted to the A2 power output. In the old days it was a mechanical part or throttle stop. (basically stops full throttle) these days the brains of the engine the ECU is reprogrammed to only procure the allowed power. The bike will be tested and issued with a bit of paper to say its A2 legal now. The benefit to this is later down the road if you get your full licence you can get it unrestricted again and have the full power.

I used to ride a ninja 250 and a restricted 33bhp z750 and tbh even they were enough. Ok, they didn't have the acceleration buzz you sometimes want but usually I didn't feel like I needed more power. Now I have a Fazer but I don't really open it up that often. But tbh 48bhp is fine. You can go as fast as you really need to be going :) I probably ride slower now than I did when I had the 250

Few mix ups there from the sounds of it. Anyone at the age of 24 or older can go for direct access but that must be done of a much larger bike than a 125cc, the training school will provide you a bike. Hey mate, the only thing I would say about a 125cc being enough, they are very limiting in the top end, so when I commuted I would be only able to get to 50 due to the wind.. which meant I was holding up cars in the NSL’s a2 I reckon should be good though, haven’t been on one though.
@RomanHistoryFan476AD4 жыл бұрын
I would say A2 would be the minimal Licence you need if your going to long term be a rider or travel far on a bike. The full A is down to personal desire i would say do you want a faster bike or not and can you handle the more power in the throttle. Some can,some Can't i personally think A2 is a public road licence, the Full A licence and bikes is for tracks really and Autobahns and American highway.
