Update! I spoke with John from DF regarding the LOD having been reduced, and this appears to be a bug. I still have to test this but supposedly this might be related to having the game installed on a secondary m.2 instead of the default storage on PS5. If so, I'll forward this info to insomniac for a possible fix. Good morning everyone! Glad to finally get this video out - I've been sick the past 3 weeks now which has made it difficult to record my voice and concentrate on editing. The game is fantastic and was a nice distraction. This was also an interesting video to put together. I've got hundreds of clips recorded here that I couldn't fit in, so there's a lot more to see! Stay tuned for more content in the near future :)

Just a question from me as this is a little concern I had with the game - how did you find the overall pacing and length of the narrative, did it feel rushed or was there enough time to explore the content of the plot?

Pacing and narrative felt great. I never felt bored with the story but also felt like I was given plenty of opportunities to screw around and explore New York between missions without it feeling out of place. It's overall very well done. I think the story plays it safe, as did the first game (probably because they're limited in what they're actually allowed to do with licensed characters like this), but it's way better than most of the marvel movies lately.

I heard the game was around 15-20 hours to beat which is on it's own not a bad thing and is similar to the length of the first game. However, this game seems significantly bigger than the first game with the amount of plot points and characters it has introduced and continnued from the first game - therefore, I thought trying to fit more into the same amount of time might lead to the game feeling rushed to an extent.

The Chrysler building is my favorite building in the whole world. To me it's a way more iconic NYC landmark than the Empire State building. When they removed it, that honestly made me more upset than Peter's face change. I specifically adore the scene in Raimi's SM1, when Ben had just died and Peter was just sitting on one of the eagles, processing his loss

The top of the Chrysler building has those beautiful art deco arches with a pattern of triangle shaped windows, that narrow to a magnificent stinger, and below you got the patriotic eagle gargoyles coming out of the corners. It is a true work of art.

@@nightwing6287 Sorry I should have gone into more detail, I'm not saying there shouldn't be an option to manually switch, it's something I use heavily in games that implement the feature for photo mode and it was sorely missed in my Platinum Spider-Man 2 playthrough. I'm saying by default there should be a natural cycle, with the manual option being something the player chooses to use similar to the first game (never actually checked if it was in Miles' game) but is not required to change it at all.

They changed the anisotropy on the default suit to be more like the pre-release suit from the first game. The anisotropy made more sense on that pre-release suit because of the ridged texture pattern of the material. When they changed the pattern to hex shapes, the specular highlights bent in multiple directions, resulting in the more even lighting we saw in the release version of the default suit from the first game. I guess they just decided they preferred a silkier shine on top of the hex pattern this time around.

The version showing on the screen is sometimes displayed incorrectly. E.g. at 14:10 you are clearly showing Spiderman Remastered, and at 14:14 you switch to Spiderman 2, but the version in both does not change (it is Spiderman 2 through both scenes).

Insomniac Games uses a system of ray-tracing fake rooms that are buried underground in the city. This is to make sure they’re nearby to be called when needed. Each fake room has a basic layout and then different variations on furniture and characters. When Spider-Man looks into a window, the game uses the ID of that window to randomly select one of the fake rooms to render. The game also casts rays back through the window to get a sense of the key light and shadows, which are then used to light the fake room. This system allows Insomniac to create realistic interior reflections, even for windows that are side-by-side. It also allows them to add details like animated ceiling fans and NPCs watching TV. This is pretty cool and very smart because it helps the game load faster. The fake rooms are located underground in the city to save performance. The game only needs to render the fake rooms once, and then it can use them for all of the windows in the city. The rooms are not as detailed as the game world, but they are still good enough to create convincing reflections.

I may be wrong but in Suit comparison I think its a minor detail, Spider man 1 original suit color is more vibrant than Spider man 2 meaning the color fades away over time, due to laundry and less texture due to lint damage fabric problems etc lol Peter needs a 2.0 suit also from a practical perspective just a theory

Great side-by-side comparison, Nick, you covered almost everything. Insomniac did a fantastic job with Spider-Man 2, not only improving the general visuals (Ray Tracing in all modes) but also keeping the revisit of New York interesting thanks to culling the more boring aspects (like car chases or obligatory random encounters) and adding new features, both in combat but even more so in traversal. When you experience the full powered web suit for the first time it's almost breathtaking at which speed you rush across New York while the engine keeps up those FPS. Sure it costs a bit of detail in far off LOD, but thanks to the more detailed surrounding area on the other side of the Hudson the overall impression is a better one. So far I'm enjoying every moment of it despite having played the previous games twice on PS5 and later on PC. Don't forget to just walk around on ground level, the new overall density feels much more like a vivid metropolis!

Commenter misses the reason why SM1 received a remaster: It was released at the tail-end of the PS4's lifecycle and with the release of PS5 there was plenty of reason to revisit it for a dedicated PS5 version.

They wrecked MJ on purpose. It's the same thing we've seen with most games now. Give the women broad shoulders, wider jawlines, no makeup, and clothes that are much less revealing. It fits with he current narrative of making women in entertainment look like men. We've all see the memes and side by sides, so there's no need for debate. In the case of MJ, it's so jarring, that there's no way to deny the changes. Nor excuse them. Regardless of the character's age up. Nonetheless, the game does look good, but as Nick points out, there are weird compromises for the larger map. I don't need a larger map or more checklists. I need a game that's tighter and has meaningful questing. I long for the days of Fallout New Vegas or more recently The Witcher 3. Most who have gotten their hands on this game have noted that the new areas to explore don't add anything to it. And judging by the trade offs, it would seem to be the case. I'll still play the game for the experience, but as with most AAA games nowadays, bigger doesn't always mean better.

I personally think the old Advanced Suit looks better in terms of design than the new main suit for Spider-Man 2, even if the detail is lower. Both in terms of design but also in terms of the appearance of the surface texture. For example, I think the checkerboard pattern on the spider logo looks too obvious now. However, I feel the exact opposite in regards to Miles's suits.

I'm pretty sure the Advanced Suit V1 they've put in Spidey 2 is using the PS4 model, not the remastered, hence the interior texture work.

Going to be real - amazing game but also feels more like DLC than even Miles Morales did. I mean - it seems super short and why was there so damn many mini-games? Seems like the devs were just bored with the idea of playing Spider Man, so they had you riding bicycles, piloting drones, doing a rhythm based DJ game, and those damned tech puzzles. Kinda sad that most of Peter’s side missions had him doing those puzzle mini games no one asked for. I know I am sounding like I hated the game and that is not the case at all. I just felt like maybe the creators lost interest in finding ways to make the player feel more like Spider-Man, and decided mini games would boost the game’s run time while being easier to develop. I appreciate that they didn’t have you do the same beat-Em-up over and over and over - but there are ways Spider Man can feel like Spider-Man without recycling the fights. You could have allowed for switching from secret identity mode to human mode on the fly, with some missions having to be accomplished as Peter (like honestly - feel like if you saw Spider Man take your photo and then you see that photo in the newspaper with Peter Parker’s photo credit, guessing his identity would be pretty easy), and that could introduce timed missions where you have to juggle Spider-Man’s personal life obligations (like making a job interview, earning rent, meeting MJ’s parents), with trying to save lives. I feel like there are more elements of Spider Man that you can make into game play that you don’t have to have a DJ mission or require he guide a drone around.

Man you PERFECTLY described how I felt about playing this game, and I also really loved it! If the first game is a 10/10 (which it is for me) then Spider-Man 2 is a 9/10. Other than what you said, my biggest complaint was that it's a much less personal story than the first. It never really made me care about these characters beyond what I learned about them in the first game. Their relationships don't really go much deeper. If I had never played the first, I would think these characters werent very special like they were in the first game. Well-acted though for sure, especially Norman and Harry. And the side missions really blew me away a few times with how emotional they could be. The music was top-notch and the sound design was incredible. The gameplay I liked a bit better in the first, but it's still amazing in the 2nd. I can't wait for the next game. I honestly think they could take some criticism about the story and hone in on the people behind the masks more, and improve on the gameplay a bit and they could have a masterpiece on their hands with the 3rd game. Either way I'm sure it'll be good, but fingers crossed that it'll be great!

It actually makes me angry that the suits the most important thing your character looks slightly less detailed and with lower textures this is absolutely not okay and they should change it asap! Like come one just the Suit wouldn't hit performance like it's unplayable who made those decisions who's man's is this?????

Seems like this dude run into a bug with streaming or something because from other comparisons out there the game looks significantly better than shown in this video mainly around the environments and lods probably worth a re try or repost after testing it correctly.

my two critiques are 1: the symbiote suit is way overdesigned. I don't like how it's segmented, i wish it was a cleaner look 2: the city is still WAY too silent. If you've ever been to NYC you'll know just how loud it can be, it's like a constant wall of sound. In the game it might aswell be a quiet suburban road
