it's simple: the animation they used, despite being 3d, didn't try to be 3d. it took advantage of the fact that it was 3d while still having the flexibility and design of 2d. almost every cgi film that comes out is almost always the same "pixar style" where it's cartoony, but everything is generated to be realistic. spider-verse, puss in boots 2, and the bad guys break this trend and instead go for a much more 2d like approach. the reason the animators did this was because they noticed how their concept art looked nothing liked the 3d product so they took a huge risk and made the cgi comic styled, which made it look much more like the concept. if they went with the pixar style, she would not fit in as well.

Like Noir, she's very different from the version in the comics, but they still managed to give her a memorable design, plenty of distinct mannerisms, and vital ways to contribute to the plot. The writers wanted Asian representation in the cast, they originally wanted Silk to fill that role but ultimately chose Peni Parker, and based her loosely off of Earth-14512's setting. Arguably they succeeded, her character is an homage to anime as she is a parody of it.

@@animeproblem1070 See, I actually think movie Peni kind of fails at being a celebration of anime. Her artstyle looks nothing like any anime I've ever seen. The most 'anime' about her is that she uses the tiniest bit of basic Japanese in her introduction, her eyes get a bit sparkly sometimes and she has motion lines when jumping into the robot. It honestly seems less authentic than in something like Kappa Mikey. And how could she be the representation of 'anime' as a whole? Anime is as rich and varied as American animation. Miles, Noir, Spider-Ham, etc. all represent different types of American animation. Can you imagine trying to represent all of those in one single character? And don't get me wrong I don't think she has to be exactly like in the comics. Noir and Ham were pretty different but their versions in this movie made a lot of sense for the what they represent. They could've changed Peni's backstory to be more original, but at least somewhat kept true to the aesthetic, the vibe and most importantly the spirit of the original. SP//dr is supposed to represent the sci-fi anime of the late 80s to early 2000s that made people in the west reconsider how animation as a medium could be taken seriously as not just a children's medium. Not just Evangelion, but also Akira, Ghost in the Shell and several others. And being more specific with the subgenre would also allow other Japanese spider-people from other subgenres like the Mangaverse's spiders and Toei's Supaidāman stand out more in sequels. If they wanted to represent something like a more child-oriented generic shōnen/shōjo anime they should've just used Mangaverse Spider-Woman to begin with.

Well technically she still has spider powers, just some. Spider-sense, a unique ability where she can telepathically talk or like connect with the spider that bit her, and maybe some increased strength? Emphasis on "some", because although she doesn't have the feats like the other 5, for someone her age and size she managed to hold one of the legs of her robot and smack it on a huge guy with a scorpion tail sending said scorpion guy quite far without much trouble
