When I walked out of Spider-Man No Way Home, I was excited about the future of spider-man, and I was thrilled by watching the 3 spider-men interact with all the classic villains. I thought it was a really fun movie. But at first, I was disappointed that it seem to have a didn't have a deeper theme like the other Home movies.
For instance, Spider-Man: Homecoming is about people trying to rise above their station. Adrian times trying to rise above a blue collar life. Peter tries to be an avenger. And he hits literal ceilings all through the movie, before triumphing by literally lifting his way out of a ceiling. In the end, he comes to accept that he needs to wait to grow up.
And Spider-Man: Far From Home is about the power of belief. Belief is Mysterio's primary weapon against Peter parker. But the movie is also about Peter learning to believe in himself.
But in no way home, I was so taken in by the big climactic fight, and the fun of seeing Toby and Andrew and everyone else, that the main theme escaped me.
Until it hit me. Spider-Man: No Way Home has a defining theme. In fact, it’s also the defining theme of every spider-man movie, comic book. This movie is about what spider-man is, at his core. Spider-Man is a failure.

I think the deeper meaning is Andrew Garfield would be a great Spider-man if he had better movies but now he's finally dorky and troubled instead of too cool and confident like he was in his own movies he feels alot more like Peter Parker. The MCU can do it better. It also concedes tht Iron Lad Spider-man doesn't feel like Peter Parker and reverts back to a comic accurate costume at the end. The MCU can do even better than their previous efforts. It basically says "everything Sony did we can do better" and then proves it. Beyond that to escape the narrative it ends with a blank slate so Marvel and Sony can negotiate which universe the next Spider-man trilogy will take place in. Beyond that, yeah, the obvious deeper meaning of the actual narrative is simple - with great power must come great responsibility.

I think it’s a shame Tobey didn’t actually say that, because it would’ve tied the themes together better, since a lot of people think the movie is just a collection of great scenes, but not a great movie. That the plot is not very deep thinking or thematic, when I think there’s quite a bit going on in the character analysis of Spider-Man than the previous Tom Holland films for how beat up mentally and emotionally he is by the end. If Tobey said it, I think more people would’ve understood the sacrifice Peter gave at the end.

I agree with everything in this video but also at the end of the day Spider-Man is just a young man in high school/college learning life and learning how to be a superhero. 1st movie he was ready to be a full fledged hero second movie just wanted to be a kid a be with his friends now he realizes there’s no in between he has to choose and he chooses to just be Spider-Man

the point isn’t that he can’t have a life it’s that he was never even slightly ready to be a real hero before the events of this film. he would constantly use his power in the most incredibly irresponsible ways and the horrible consequences he suffered for that with losing aunt may and everything are how he finally learned the core lesson of spider-man and is now ready to be a true hero

Not only that, but from his interaction with the other two Peters, he learns that even in alternate universes where there is no "Avengers" there is still a Spider-Man. I think subconsciously that gave him the confidence to tell Strange to cast that spell; that even with all his connections to people severed, he'll figure out a way to make it all work on his own. Now I feel MCU Spidey has a true origin arc.

The deeper meaning hit me right when I left- it's about redemption. Past mistakes are redeemed by all main characters, the spidermen AND villains. Tobey redeems his mistake by convincing Tom not to give-in to his anger. Andrew redeems his mistake by saving MJ. Tom redeems his mistake that caused the movie to happen at all. By trying too hard to fix something, he made it worse. He was willing to sacrifice everything in order to stop others from sacrificing for him.

Having met Stan the Man Lee back in the late 80s early 90s, I spoke with him about Spiderman, he said that Peter Parker / Spiderman is an everyday man's man, he has it in his heart to do right, but he fails, however he keeps trying, he is the underdog of all other superheroes who have for the most part, their act together, it's okay to fail, but it's what you do after that, that matters. Do you fail and give up, or do you fail, get up and keep trying? Spiderman is learning and keeps trying. Stan told me to never give up on anything you feel is right and true in your heart. I was told by people, doctors I'd never be a firefighter, it's too hard just give up, I was overweight and had some health issues as a kid but I lost the weight got into extreme shape overcame those health problems, well I tried and keep going, and I became a firefighter, now a retired Captain. Hope is the key message with Spiderman even if bad things happen and they do with Spiderman, but he doesn't give up. Anyway, keep going folks and keep hope in your hearts and do what's right! I was really sad when I heard of his passing, that rare chance meeting I had with him was like I walked away leaving an old friend. And I knew my chance to talk or meet him again was low to zero, but I wanted to, and remind him of what he told me as a kid and what I did with that wisdom. RIP my friend, I've not given up!

Very inspiring. If I may ask, as a firefighter, did you ever have a conflicting moment where you considered how you may fail or not come out of a situation at all? I believe in being in the service of others, and for whatever it’s worth if you are who you say you are (can’t trust the internet) I commend you for your work if no one else does. I ask because as you can see in these movies it often comes down to “why bother?” and you put all the time and effort into doing what you do and it’s often unappreciated. Also, the personal sacrifices that come with it can be burdensome. I just want to know what someone from your line of work ever had such a personal crisis?
@dadtype2339
@dadtype2339 2 жыл бұрын
@@JDog2656 you are absolutely correct in everything you said, from you never can tell what is true off the internet by people or what they say, and it is very much for the most part a thankless job. I honest am a Ret Capt. Firefighter and Paramedic that last part gave me a chance to see things from both sides of the 911 call of the day. Some days I was assigned medical and some days the apparatus. First I believe there are people who lie and they have no honor to begin with, but I wouldn't have put that out there if I didn't mean it as truth. Regardless of the call, (and I did both Career and Volunteer ending with Volunteer when I retired, volunteer guys I can tell you get the same treatment with training and certifications as career, the worst of it is people seem to think they are fake firefighters which is so stupid we didn't fight fake fires or pretend to save lives, in fact 76% of the world's firefighters are volunteer) the trip to the scene always embarks us to think of a prayer in lines to the Firefighters prayer, you never know, sure SOPs may be the same but the nature of the call and it's experience will be different. There will never be a time you know this is it because if you do it long enough and a true to the cause you must know that in that profession anytime could be that time, and it was the sacrifice I was okay with or else I'd not have done it at all. But to pick out one time out of the years of service I'd have to say that for the most part I felt I'd be fine, but there were times I wasn't unscathed, I have some burns from a forest fire I went to I took my gloves off for a sec in an area I thought was safe, but what I wasn't expecting and most folks don't know is pine trees burst as their sap heats up, well on did not too far from me and my left top of my hand was burned by super heated boiling sap drops. Another time will doing an emergency egress head first down a ladder in full gear I dislocated my left shoulder, that was not fun and certainly not expected. I always hated working on kids as as with adults you get some warning of shock, but kids can be fine one minute and then crash with no warning. But I worked on them anyway when needed praying God would guide me and he had as I had never lost a child thank God. I do remember a time when it looked grim, we went in on a burning structure fire a single story home, and it's not like TV which I laugh at. You can't see anything, on hands and knees doing either a left wall or right wall search when the owners say their 8yo is somewhere in the house and you can't spray water yet or the steam will kill whoever is inside. I was second in line and while moving down a hallway in the hot dark vacuum that fires and your bunker gear create, I thought I heard something from the bathroom off to the right so I tapped the guy in front of me and moved into the bathroom and there in the tub was the child, as I looked as best I can my group wasn't at the doorway or hallway anymore smoke pouring in as the fire was near this location, and I know in moves they show the firefighter taking his mask off to give compressed air to whoever but lol that was not what I did as it wouldn't help him or the victim/patient if I get into trouble too. I felt trapped by smoke and heat without protection I knew going back would not be good for the kid as he has no fire gear obviously, the bathroom window was a joke three small cube shape separated by wall at the time I felt noway could I let alone him get out that way so I asked the kid what behind the wall of the bathtub as I shut the bathroom door. Now of course I did radio I found the kid but between the crappy static radios have anyway and the SCBA mask you can't hear crap, the kid said the kitchen which was on Bravo side of the house. The fire was in the garage Alpha working it's way into the entry and heading back into Delta side. The wall was tile and with a quick prayer and my halligan I made an opening big enough for junior and I to get through making our way out the side glass doors we already had with a group on Bravo side and made exit. I went through first through the hole I made and then pulled junior through and quickly on our hands and knees got him out first then me. He has some smoke inhalation but for the most part was fine. I took him out and to the medics and a short break in recovery then back at it on the line to switch out. There was no drama and thank you's from anyone, it was a job I did it proud to have done it and went back to work. That was the first and only time I smashed through a wall to help someone out. Where the guys went I don't remember but I do remember they were written up and heavily yelled at by the Chef and his assistants and me for not sticking around, this was the volunteer guys btw.. I never worried about the training they got it was their mental capacity to not get panicked or lock up, always had to watch my own back in volunteer, career not so much. It's a great job if you find it's your calling as it truly takes a special person to do it and do it well and hang in there. I've seen guys come and go think it's all easy because they are tough, until they come into a 12+hour fire call, with combat, search, recovery, overhaul, and clean up then back at the house hose removal inspection clean up and restock. Or they see the not so nice things people do to each other, or the result of an accident, cutting people out that didn't survive or a child in the back asking why mommy and daddy are sleeping, or a 21 year old Marine who drank way too much and crashed his 2018 Camero at 125mph and bounced around in the car like a pinball machine as the car itself was like a dryer spinning through the trees and culverts with cement it smashed through, and all on a day before Christmas Eve. Home for the holidays... Or once I saw a two story fire and at the entrance ready to go in the center of the living room ceiling collapsed with no joke katana Japanese swords, as the owner had a massive collection upstairs out on display and many of them if not all of them unsheathed. Or you learn from the owner he has been stock piling 227 rounds in his attack.....all I'll say is you really can't fix stupid. Those guys I spoke of come and go because their idea of it being a fun and hero like job of awe end up leaving as it's too much for them, and therefore didn't have the calling. I myself am the last in my family to be a firefighter, my brother in-law was my assistant chef, my two nephews were in the fire department with me, but my children and other families have no interest in doing it, my uncle was a firefighter my Great Grandfather was in the NYFD before retiring and moving. If you are doing it Brother, I thank you, and I have always prayed for my brothers and sisters near and far for safety to and from and back home Everytime I hear a siren and a Federal Q going. I thank you for the reply and for reading this which I typed all on my phone and it thinks it knows best in spelling, tried my best to correct as I went but I'll not be editing this, as of this writing it's Dec 22 2021, and pray you a safe and great Christmas and Happy Safe New Year!!!!

@@JDog2656 I forgot to add, if you can believe it in the long thing, lol but I always asked the new guys who you can tell was in it for the glory, I asked do you know what a hero is to a firefighter? They of course said either nothing or something stupid, and I'd tell them a Hero is someone who doesn't go home. We are not heros until that end in the line of duty, we are doing a job that many can not, to the public that's a hero, we run in as most if not all run out as they say, it's not because we are looking to be a hero, we are serving our community, and it was my honor to serve the public in a way that many can not. It takes a special person. A true servant of both the public and of God. I was crazy enough and loved it enough to be paid but then to do it for free! That's how much I enjoyed doing it. It's the only thing I ever did wherein I felt I belonged in the world. That's how I knew it was my calling to do it. Okay off soap box, thanks again for reading, be Safe and Be Well Brother!

The message behind the movie was pretty summed up by the famous responsibility line. It's him accepting responsibility, while fully breaking away from Tony Stark. I love Spiderman because he still has his relatability as a human to audiences, he isn't as mystical or the typical superhero that is out of this world. Spiderman seems like someone you just can relate to, I am glad they include his mistakes as defining story lines. He has a normal girlfriend, his aunt May, and is awkward with a normal apartment in New York. He even joked about still being broke even as Spiderman! Extremely lovable and also able to fit in with superheroes i.e avengers. Love Spiderman!! It grounds the MCU, especially now that we are about to enter into a more mystic power phase of the MCU.

No, the greater theme is very simple, and common to hero stories: who am I when I have nothing but myself? It's an even more serious version of Tony Stark's "If you're nothing without the suit" bit. Peter literally has to lose everyone, not just one person or two people or three, but EVERYONE who ever knew him. By the end of NWH, he has no one to share his pain with, no one who can help him shoulder his grief and responsibility and guilt, or even his memories or his affections. And he has to rebuild from there. (And if that sounds familiar, it should: it's more or less where Wanda has ended up, too.)

Great analysis. I can't help but think it missed the mark -- the theme of this film is 2nd chances. Failure is a part of it, but the second chance - to overcome those failures - is the theme. It resonates throughout every character and every hero. For Andrew, the second chance to save a loved one in danger. For Tobey, to save these men who were once his friends - and bring them back. For Holland, to overcome the failure of May's death by NOT killing Goblin, which is what she wanted. Second chances come through failure. But this analysis would have been better served analyzing the success after the failure.

@TheIncredibleMarsupial 2 жыл бұрын
My favorite part is the poetry. Toby's spider man finishes Peters line "with great power comes great responsibility" in the scene after May's death. That makes him change his mind about pressing the button and thus spiderman sees who he really is. Well when MJ's mind gets wiped at the end peter visits her in the store and finishes her sentence "if you expect disappointment, then you can never really be disappointed". I feel like that rhymed nicely and may in turn help MJ remember peter. Cool stuff.

This is why Spider-Man is the best hero, he’s a normal person dealing with things that are beyond his means. Sure he’s got super powers and he’s very smart, but he makes terrible mistakes. And he always does his best to choose what’s right. It’s why he would make an excellent Jedi.

Its obviously been a rough week because even the breakdown summary of this made me a little emotional. lol Spider-Man has been my favorite hero for 30 + years for this very reason; He fails but he gets back up, takes stock and accountability and he does what it takes to be better. It's what every contributing human in society strives to do on a daily basis. We are spider-man.

I agree with 90% of this, just not the Sony part. You could argue that Into the Spider-Verse was them overcoming their past failures, but if anything the Tom Holland Spider-man movies are an indictment of Sony's handling of the live-action Spider-man movies since Raimi's Spider-man 3. The MCU movies are basically Feige in the Thanos role saying "fine, I'll do it myself". ;)

I think NWH had a really strong theme about second chances and how we tend to overlook their value. - Ned, Peter and MJ all want to go to MIT because it would be a fresh start for them. - Peter wants to cure the villains because he believes that will give them a second chance at redemption - Peter’s choice at the end of the film ultimately gives him a second chance at life, to do things better. - And of course the final battle takes place at the Statue of Liberty, where Peter refers to as “a place that represents second chances”.
@ChrisSaad
@ChrisSaad 2 жыл бұрын
The theme was “you have to chose who you are. You can’t be all things to all people.” He can’t save the world AND save the villains. Trying to do so almost cracked the multiverse open and resulted in his aunt dying. There’s no way home for Peter. No way to return to an innocent time as a kid with his aunt. He can’t stay between l both worlds. He needs to embrace his responsibility and needs to choose to step into the world and take responsibility.

John Watt is a great director. He delivered first two Spidey in teen comedy format that distracted us from noticing the consequences Peter has to face and choose. Even those consequences are beyond his control! So, who's going to direct the next trilogy? Director's vision matters. Whatever Sony/Marvel do, just don't get into the way of creative team.

Nope. From the moment he appears in Civil War, we've already known there will be a major character arc to Tom's Spider-Man. His Spider-Man is the least accurate adaptation of the comic character, which is weird considering they pay attention to the smallest details in the MCU. We can now expect the comic Spider-Man in their next projects. The only problem they have is that Tom was such a great cast for their vision of Spider-Man, but he doesn't grow physically. It'd be weird to see the same Tom over the years, looking like he's still in High School.

I started reading Spider-Man as a pre-teen back in the '60s. He immediately became my favorite exactly because of his struggles, and the depth of the potential identification by readers with the character (of course back then I wouldn't have articulated it that way!). I'm so glad the MCU films get that depth. It's odd that, back then, Kingpin was always popping up, but he's never been in any of the films. I think that dealing with regular human villains brings out a lot of Peter Parker's character more than enhanced, mutant, non-human villains.

May actually doesn’t serve the role of Ben. Sure she gave Peter the Speech but Peter never learns from speeches, he learns from what the World does to/teaches him. Uncle Ben dies as a result of Peter’s selfishness which teaches Peter “with great power there must also come great responsibility”, which is what Peter comes to on his own in his 616 origin where Ben never gave him the speech. But now, May doesn’t die as a result of Peter’s selfishness, May dies as a result of Peter’s SELFLESSNESS! What the World is teaching Peter with May’s death is actually the Goblin’s lesson, “No good deed goes unpunished”. Despite Peter doing the right thing this time the World still takes away what he loves. May’s speech about great power coming with great responsibility wasn’t teaching Peter anything new, it was anchoring him to his morals in a dark moment that was about to become so much darker. Before the world taught Peter that selfishness invites tragedy and Peter learned from the World and changed for the better to become a source for good and to now act out of Selflessness. But now the World is teaching Peter that his Selflessness will cause him pain and misery as well. But this time instead of learning and changing his ways because of the world, May helps anchor Peter to not let himself be corrupted and become a monster. Peter at the end knows that he must be and stay good even in a world that would foster the contrary.
