I got to meet and talk to Spike Lee at an event at my university some months ago. He basically told aspiring artists and filmmakers to go out and do it and forget about the naysayers.

Much truth. Made my first film on the 2nd or 3rd week of my freshman year of college, outside of my production classes. Shot and edited over the course of 4-5 days. Had to make tons of calls to see where I could film leading up to then. Bunch of no's a few yeses, and a film made. The grind, the grind.

ibsprintin do you go to usc? If so, keep networking with as many people as you can. That’s what I’m doing and it looks like I’m going down the right path.

He makes you BRING IT! When we were filming his HBO Documentary; "If God Is Willing and Da Creek Don't Rise." I wrote the poem and thought I was going to read off the paper. ShiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiT! Spike was like, "You gotta memorize that joint." No reading off paper....and if you've ever seen it, I nailed that joint! Phyllis Montana-LeBlanc. New Orleans, La. ("When The Levees Broke.) I'm just saying...he speaks truth.

I remember watching this YEARS back & his words stuck with me. I just graduated this past May with my MFA from Howard. A few more edits & I’ll have my film submitted to festivals. I wrote, directed, edited, co-produced and stared in it. Can’t nobody ever call me “Lazy”

Well, that degree increases at least the probability of getting a good job. Doesnt mean, it is a sure-shot in getting your dream job but at least, it increases. I personally believe that if you are really talented you will make it anyway. Degree or no degree. The true geniuses always make it because even other people recognize that you are something special... But thats just me..

Class of 2007's advice should have been; sue NYU Undergrad for academic fraud... then invest the settlement in Apple.

Directors who produce money making films for producers, get results.Degrees are a dime a dozen. Many people will never make it. Sorry that'sthe reality.
