@IainHendry3 ай бұрын
It is an interesting concept; but because the vehicle is driven via positive engagement (i.e. servomotor + gearbox), what is the fault mode/recovery when a failure occurs and the vehicle stops on the tracks in an unfavourable position (i.e. in a loop)?
@MondoCoasters3 ай бұрын
On Desmo Race at Mirabilandia they have an emergency car that can tow others to safety, but I dunno how that could translate over to a coaster with inversions.
@IainHendry3 ай бұрын
@@MondoCoasters Interesting! A tow vehicle makes a lot of sense. I wonder if they have a clutch which releases automatically (ie requires power to close), so that the vehicle freewheels in the event of an E-stop? Although that may not be a desirable outcome, either…
@thinkingchristian3 ай бұрын
I agree; its a very interesting concept and hopefully will be reliable. I believe they are using direct drive, so no gearbox should be needed. Unlike some of Maurer's previous designs (like Desmo Race) this seems to use two racks; If I was the engineer I'd use a separate powertrain for each to add redundancy for a design like this with inversions. That way both would have to independently fail for the ride to get stuck upside down. Freewheeling could be dangerous because the other cars seem to be spaced on the same track; it doesn't appear to use traditional block sections (though if the other cars were moved a safe distance then freewheeling could be a possible solution).
@IainHendry3 ай бұрын
@@thinkingchristian Ah! Yeah, if the servo is big enough with no gearbox, then I can believe the back-drive torque is low enough that the train would simply valley more-or-less like a conventional coaster. Presumably they would space trains far enough apart that a power failure scenario like that couldn’t result in a collision (likely tuned for each specific circuit design).
@thinkingchristian3 ай бұрын
@@IainHendry yeah that’s a good point, the spacing of trains could be based on the where a train would valley if a fault occurred, meaning it would depend on the track layout. There would be “block sections” based on gravity haha. It also seems possible that this mechanism could be used in conjunction with a traditional roller coaster design too - use the motor for the launch and then let gravity do the rest; the racks can simply “end.” The only difficulty would be making sure the gears line up with the racks when the train enters a launch section. My guess is Maurer is going this direction at least in part for sustainability reasons - they’ve used regenerative braking for more traditional launch systems in the past.
