The difference between American dad and the likes of Family Guy, Cleveland show and Simpsons, is that Stan is a very unpredictable and active character. Guys like Homer and Peter usually get dragged into a situation where they have to react to it and get out. Meanwhile Stan is quite often the one who gets situations going. He is an active character, he is consistent, and his ability to cause violence is not random like Peter, but more focused and played straight.

stan also has a bigger range. homer and peter are just stupid and that's about it, with stan you can do much more because he's not just one note, he is stupid in some situations but in others he's very smart and effective, then you have his fucked up childhood which can also be used to explore interesting plot lines, obvioulsy his job at the cia also has a lot of interesting posibilities for stories, etc.

As a person who is currently binging the series right now, my top 10 episodes for y'all to watch: 1. Tearjerker, just a lovely spinoff episode 2. Camp Refugee, very dated by todays standard but the B plot is honestly just so hilarious 3. The One that Got Away, amazing roger centered episode 4. *Ricky Spanish*, Need I say more. 5. Naked to the Limit one more Time, and Lost in Space, these two part episodes are just fun and enjoyable 6. News Glance with Genevieve Vavance, the name speaks for herself 7. Hot Water, just dip a toe... 8.Great Space Roaster, Roger loses his shit and it's great 9. Old Stan on the Mountain, Comments section I haven't been entirely truthful with you. 10. American Fung, now some people say this episode is bad, but the random allegiance to Fung Wa is truly beautiful

Whenever you have an episode that is extremely focused on somebody it is in their personal heaven and then we flip over to somebody else's whenever it's focused on them a little too much. You kind of explains why we get episodes like these with the 200 where a bunch of random stuff just happens and then we just go back to the regular continuity like if nothing happened. It's a way to give the entire series a pass for everything it does from then on
