The whole subplot is a reference to an old film/play that only people that regularly watch TCM even know about any more! While Family Guy does whole episode tributes to “All About Eve” now (and would use *_any_* excuse to make a loving homage to old movie musicals both well loved and obscure throughout it’s whole run, really) American Dad was doing subplot’s that referenced “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolfe” in it’s earlier seasons!

Funniest bit is that Francine USUALLY is stupid, like in the "averages" scene... but she also has some scenes and episodes where she's super intelligent (or has very niche knowledge). Like when she self-learned her way to become a world-class marine biologist, taught herself languages, or the one Christmas episode where she had a ton of historical and archeological knowledge due to being a parody of Evy from The Mummy.

I can’t lie the “camp refugee” episode had me and my older brother crying laughing everytime Stan said “Camp Re-Foo-Gee!” Only because when our older sister was younger she ever so innocently and curiously asked our parents “what are ‘re-foo-gee’ camps?” And my dads first response he could think of was “fuckin WHAT CAMPS????” as my mom was nearly pissing herself from laughing in the background, meanwhile my brother and I just didn’t really know what was going on, but then when we were older, we were obviously smarter and aware of the world-we were binge watching American Dad when it was still on Netflix, and we watched that episode.
