Probably the cruelest thing about Gaston is that despite sharing what he thought about the Beast in the song “Kill Beast” and that he described the Beast as a bloodthirsty savage, he was obviously aware of the Beast’s intelligence and knew that he wasn’t just some dumb animal as he made everyone else to believe. He talks to Beast throughout the fight showing that he clearly knows he can understand him. This might be giving him too much credit, but It’s possible that Gaston might’ve even realized that the Beast was a human being who had been cursed. But Gaston didn’t care about any of this, he just knew that Bell had feelings for him and he wanted to get rid of him.

For me, Gaston is the scariest Disney villain, second to Frollo I don’t hear people talk about how Gaston basically got the whole town in on his plan to marry Belle, and they just set up a ceremony and everything. On top of that, he got everybody in on sending Maurice to the looney bin, which would leave Belle alone and vulnerable. The scariest villain is the most convincing ones, and Gaston is basically a pillar of the community, so anything he says goes.

It's sad that Disney+ re-cut the Human Again song when it was added back into the movie for the anniversary release 20 years ago. I love ‘Human Again’, but it has always bothered me that in deep-cleaning the whole castle, they go into the forbidden West Wing. They should have tackled everything else BUT that, and left the Beast’s lair alone. -I mean, that is his own private quarters after all, and the rose can still be damaged; every previous reason for its being off-limits still exists just as much as before. It was THE #1 rule of the castle. Yet somehow because of the all-important date night, suddenly the ban is lifted, and anyone may freely go traipsing in?

The scene where beast turns into a prince, genuinely scared the shit out of me because I never liked the way the prince looked when they showed him so I definitely like the beast 1000% more
@CloverSchilling6 ай бұрын
Belle being kind of off-put by the prince's human form is important thematically, the beast turning into a human was his reward for being a person worthy of someone else's love, not Belle's reward for being able to love a beast. She sees his eyes are the same (big baby blues, which he had even as a beast) and she accepts him for who he is once again. As a kid the beast sent an elderly woman begging for shelter back out into the cold to die, and so she revealed herself as a fairy and cursed him to be as monstrous on the outside as she felt he was on the inside. Him changing himself into a better person for Belle, not because Belle "made" him better, is how he was able to gain her love and she was able to break his curse. His face and body are also based on Greek sculptures, because animator reasons. And yes, James Baxter and Howard Ashman were incredible, as were the many other people who worked on this film. If Disney had not axed their hand drawn animation team they would be in a very different place today.

The curse will be perment if not broken by his 21 birthday. Than we hear in the 'Be Our Guest' we learn it's been ten years already of being cursed. So, the witch cursed a child, a 11 year old for his bad attitude. Him AND his servants? That really is messed up when you think about it. The live action tries to fix that by saying the servants didn't do anything to stop their master from ruining his son but, they are servants. They can't be talking to their boss like that if they wanted to keep their job. So, ehhh.

There are two flaws with this movie: The Beast doesn’t have a name. It's Adam, but that's never said in the movie. Gaston (the antagonist) disappears for so long. He is so great, but he doesn’t have enough scenes

the reason why this film is so tight and the musical numbers are so efficient is that they gave howard ashman unlimited budget and resources to make this before he died of AIDS (he also made little shop of horrors and the little mermaid alongside alan menken who is still going and still making stuff)
