Get this. The director they got to replace Brenda Chapman had no idea what the movie was about. In a BTS special features or an interview whatever, he said “gender has nothing to do with this movie”. I mean to be fair it 100% is more of a family movie. The person that is forcing Merida into what she is “supposed to do” is her mother. You could say it was a gendered story if it was her father or brothers but they really don’t care.
@InternetNonsense7 ай бұрын
This movie is very gendered one and it's most good when it is: a struggle between femininity (Merida's mom) and being a tomboy (Merida) and understanding you need both to function healthily. By the end Merida embraces more tactful diplomacy, making connections, "mending bonds" and sees a power in that sort of performance (her mom could make the room freeze and behave in the middle of the fight just with that poised aura and wanted her daughter to have that too albeit forcefully in the beginning) and Merida's mom learns to ride horses with loose hair and various "boyish" survival skills that come in handy too in times of need: catching fish, self defense etc. They learn from each other and learn to appreciate both skill sets and ways of being: the civil political manners and the freedom and independence of being able to survive in the wild. They see how having both of these options can be helpful or even life-saving in certain situations and nothing to scoff at so they come to compromise and understanding. The message is deep and fantastic, but handled in a messy, underdeveloped way and it shows. Which is very sad because when movie gets into relationship between the two it is at its peak.
@ARCtheCartoonMaster7 ай бұрын
