Okay ready? *She didn’t give consent. The end. That’s it, no discussion needed.* Okay so some people are confused about the whole "it's just fan art she didn't need to give consent" thing, theres is a difference between making fan art of her, and making something of her and selling it for money, if u make fan art that's fine, if you plan on selling it then you would need permission and consent with the "its okay to do that", she said she didn't have any say or even talked about her being on the cover of a magazine, anything is fine until money is brought up into the situation bc money changes the story lol

If anyone thinks that Billie or anyone else is overreacting to this, put yourself in her shoes. Imagine you’re a teen, and suddenly you see yourself ALL over the internet in a magazine cover. Normally, you would be happy, but you had no idea that this was even going on. It was WITHOUT consent. Also, it was implied that you were shirtless in the art and were bald, too. Personally, I would be very upset if this happened to me, and I think a lot of other teens would be too. People forget that celebrities are human too. They have feelings and emotions, especially about how they’re portrayed in society and in the media. I think that if Billie hadn’t spoken up for herself, it would also have been viewed negatively by some, because people could’ve seen THAT as in that she doesn’t care about her image. As someone from the US, it is true. My middle and high school banned spaghetti (skinny) strapped tops, clothes with potentially lewd or offensive logos, and shorts/skirts that are shorter than the level of where your hands fall when they hang by your sides. Whether kids get caught or not is another story (perhaps dependent on favoritism or the attitude of the eyewitness), but if people got caught, they were forced to go to their gym locker and wear their dirty gym clothes for the rest of the day, or loaner clothes from students who lost their clothes years ago. These rules, of course, mostly affect girls, and the people who got caught more often than not were girls. I only got caught twice, once in middle and once in high school. For reference, middle school is the same as junior high school, between elementary (grades can vary, but mine was K-5) and high school (grades 9-12, for the most part).

Ugh I know in a way how she feels. My boyfriends friend did this to me but put a picture up on me on his website, facebook official page and instagram (he is an amature photographer with about 1,000 followers on instagram and several thousand on facebook ) It was a horrible picture of me even and I had no idea about it until someone else saw it and questioned me since he put it up as "bride" (definitely not a bride...and I'm wearing a pink formal dress not a freaking wedding gown) I was upset and everyone told me to get over it and that it's ok for him to do that. I was also called sensitive for it.. That pic is still up on those platforms. People need to ask before doing this stuff

I’m gonna be honest, when I got over here to watch this I was entirely ready to get annoyed with Billie, heck I don’t even like most of her music. I was expecting this to be about some creepy fan art of her on deviant art or something. But then it turned out to be an issue that I can really empathize with. I can understand the people who are like “it’s just her shoulders. It’s not being sexualized!” But that’s really not the issue. At all. It’s the fact that a magazine did this without her consent, or even telling anyone on her team about this. They went behind her back to portray her in a way that she was ok with. THATS the issue. So Billie, I can respect the fact that you have the guts to stand up for how you portray your own body image. You go girl.

well, if it was a straight up image of Billie they should've asked her, her team, or maybe the photographer. But it's art, I can publish my art without needing the consent of Billie, even if the main character in the piece is Billie herself.

I don't think the artist's interpretation of Billie was wrong, there's millions of fan art done by people WITHOUT the artist's consent and I personally don't think that you need consent from every single artist/celebrity to draw/paint/digitalize a picture of them. However, I do think that Nylon was short-sighted for not asking consent from her/her team for doing a piece on her especially for being a PUBLISHED magazine and not some tabloid that trashes people. Using her as a COVER without informing her is clearly monetary driven and less so appreciation/support driven as they have stated.

Even if it didn’t look like she was shirtless, I can definitely see why she was upset by the fact that they wrongly portrayed her and without her permission. It’s messed up that she had to find out she was on this cover through social media. Imagine if this had gone to print and wasn’t posted or she just didn’t come across it.
