in canada we would also add a head and chin strap to ensure the head does not move. The guard preforming the trap squeeze would be against a wall with a tight squeeze ( tight enough to leave thumb marks) on the victim. One guard would get out of the water and take the top when lifting victim out while the other two push gently from the bottom.

It really just depends on what your pool uses for roll overs and what your spinal board allows. I find the vice grip roll over works the best! But it’s to each their own and like I said, what their pool facility recommends

Why a vice grip in shallow water? Wouldn't a head splint be easier? That's what we're taught in the UK

Hi Dominik, this demonstration is only 1 way of securing the spine during a water emergency. This demonstration is to provide the rescuer with options . Shallow water is variable in height and if too shallow to perform this type of rescue than another option is the extended arm roll over. These 2 options are ways to prepare the patient to be strapped to a board to be safely removed from the water . We assume the head splint is similar to what is called an Extended Arm Rollover here in Australia which is also demonstrated here kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5mupZtvpsR1qdU

Dominik Heward while a vice script is just as useful in shallow water I agree that a head splint would be more efficient. In addition, had a head splint have been used the lifeguard line would have been able to move the casualty to the side themselves meaning the board would not have been deemed necessary as they would have just needed the help of other lifeguards to lift them onto the pools edge. However, this was filmed in 2016 and a few things have changed since then, so perhaps that’s why.

Lol my friend shoved me off the edge by the shallow end and I fell in and heard a crack when I hit the floor and I couldnt stand up it hurt really bad so my friend told the lifeguard and he started panicking a lot and they put a collar and backboard on me ans took my onto the side and called an ambulance and like 20 lifeguards were swarmed around me checking me out. I was fine but the swarm of lifeguards was terrifying

Sarah Thomason the lifeguard should not have panicked as in training we are taught to remain calm around the casualty, and talk to them to reassure them everything is fine, also there should have only been 5/6 lifeguards surrounding you as that is all that is necessary.

@@8yazmin9 straight up, too many hands and it’s counter productive, too little and people might get tired or miss something, only 4-5 I would say but yeah 6 I could see aswell. Other lifeguards should’ve been keeping the public calm and helped clear the area for the responders. Responders definitely want to stay as calm as possible so that plans and commands can be given loud and clear so nobody is hurt, aswell as having the victim panicked might cause them to try to move which is A HUGE NO NO on the spinal board, in general we move them as little as possible.

I guess this is the way it was 6 years ago, however, second lifeguard does nothing to keep head and spine in a straight line by holding the head each side
