He did kind of deserve being pulled out of the chair; for all that big talk earlier and looking down on the Dude, I'd say the "big" Lebowski was a much smaller person because he was indeed a complete phony who lived off his late wife's money and then tried to earn some extra cash by exploiting a completely innocent person with a bleeding hearts story of his trophy wife, which he actually hated. The dude was honest and completely fine with who he was. He didn't try to be anything more than himself and actually tried to do the right thing when he needed to (although reluctantly).

OK new shit has come to light. Just learned this today from a TBL Facebook group I’m in- Want to see an actor at work? It’s commonly acknowledged that every scene in TBL is performed as scripted. The only ad-libbed line in the movie is Jeff Bridges “human paraquat”. Check out Goodman’s double-take head crank when Bridges starts hunting for his line and then blurts it out.
