I think what made Spinal Tap so funny was the fact that, if you didn't know, you'd think they were a real band. The songs were genuinely catchy and their image was spot on. I think Ozzy once said that he didn't get the joke at first because it all looked so real!

Lyrics: The window's dirty The mattress stinks This ain't no place to be a man Ain't got no future Ain't got no past And I don't think I ever can. The floor is filthy The walls are thin The wind in howling in my face The rats are peeling I'm loosing ground Can't seem to join the human race. I'm living in a hell hole Don't want to stay in this hell hole Don't want to die in this hell hole Girl, get me out of this hell hole. I rode the jet stream I hit the top I'm eating steak and lobster tails The sauna's drafty The pool's too hot The kitchen stinks of boiling snails. The tax man's coming The butler quit This ain't no place t be a man I'm going back to where I started I'm flashing back into my pan. It's better in a hell hole You know where you stand in a hell hole Folks lend a hand in a hell hole Girl, get me back to my hell hole

Viv's death was faked. In the mid-80s Tap owed loads of money to charities, but it was learned that only Viv Savage's name was spelled correctly on the contracts. Thus, Viv was the only legally responsible party. And so it was: Viv dies, having broke his own employment agreement with Tap by lying about drumming. As a result, Tap were absolved of all debt, even recouping Viv's estate and life insurance payout as business expenses by claiming damages. He still plays for The Tap remotely via morse code.

The film was the perfect spoof of the rock documentaries of the 70s, and this video (unintentionally?) turned out to be the perfect spoof of the MTV 80s.

This is the only surviving music video by the fictional English rock band Spinal Tap during the Mick Shrimpton era all the other tapes melted because the room they were stored in inside the studio was too hot, I remember seeing Spinal Tap perform Hell Hole on the English music chart television programme Top Of The Pops and David St. Hubbins throwing his guitar on stage. I don't have the tape of it anymore because a twat who hated me in school was visiting and he threw the tape into a tree and my cat Seabel thought it was a bird and jumped at it and it fell in the next door neighbour's pool and he did not like it so he had it exploded and it got destroyed. To this day I am still trying to find this Top Of The Pops performance and I have no luck so far.

1:11 That riff is actually composed almost like a joke, but it's wonderfully serious. If you know where it runs on the fretboard, (as a guitarist you'd understand.) It's patterned after British humor and mocks American Rock n Roll. It reminds me of a line in Time Bandits when 'Evil' kills a henchman and says, "Never talk to me like that again!"

So…. We just had a roof leak that destroyed two rooms worth of drywall and this song came to mind…. This song is my life. Thank God it got me laughing hysterically instead of crying.
