Sensational sock yarn. I haven't had much luck with this, but your episode gave me some great tips. Thank you so much.

I'm so glad! Keep trying! I would try to steer clear of Merino, even standard Merino is slipperier than other fibers. I’ve had very good success with spinning Rambouillet very thin, I also like Shetland/silk blend. Spin happy!

Very nice! I hope your Bernedoodle doesn’t have a sock fetish like mine does. I have to hide my socks 😀. Really enjoy your videos (and the background crunching noises that Finn makes). You both make me Spin Happy.

Thank You! I was worried about the Nylabone chewing sounds! Finn has two socks. One from my son and one from daughter. They have stinky feet! 🤣 He has shown no interest in our socks. But I don’t leave mine on the floor! LOL! I am glad you are enjoying my videos. Spin Happy!😃

He’s definitely a fun feature in your videos. I hope there will be a Finn Fur spinning lesson after his first grooming 😂!

@jkfiberarts right?! I have sooooo many sock spins but how many have I gotten around to knitting in the past 4 years? Just 1 pair!! But I am over halfway done with the first sock of another pair, so I'm on a roll for knitting all the socks I so carefully spun for 😅

I’ve been waiting for this spin ,, jam packed with information as usual. Thankyou Kirstan. What angle of spin would you say the singles were,, looked more than 30 but difficult to see.? I know the ply was 30 though. Your finished yarn looked so perfect consistent and fine,, I can only dream . Congrats on your planned shop hope you do well with it . I had to watch the beginning of this vid over a few times 😊,, I kept getting distracted by Fin ,, and his fluffy slipper feet …
@jkfiberarts9 ай бұрын
I am so happy you found some pearls in my rambling! The ply back test for the singles was around 30 as well. I use the ply back test with my single and look for 30 degrees of twist when plying back on itself to predict how my plied yarn will look. I can decide, based on the ply back, while spinning the single if I want to increase or decrease my twist. And Finn! He was so noisy! I actually decreased the background noise to almost zero and you can still hear him chewing that bone! 😂I love his feet. They are my favorite part of him! He doesn’t mind at all having his feet/toes touched. I pet them all the time! ❤️

I think I could sit and watch you spin all day. Wish you lived near me because I would save my pennies to have you teach me how to spin everything! So glad I found your channel early in my spinning adventure. Do you ever teach at fiber festivals?
@jkfiberarts9 ай бұрын
I am so glad you found my channel! I do not teach at festivals. I live in Carroll County, MD and we are starting a spinners guild! I will be able to teach through there and I am donating my Ashford Drum carder out to guild members for cheap. I have considered teaching over Zoom, and during Covid, I offered free, spinning lessons to my friends on Facebook. Not one taker! Lol.

I did a quick scroll (and i haven't had caffeine yet this morning) so could have missed it. But do you have a video on capturing good pictures of your finished yarn? Your photos are always lovely and i would love a video on tips for that :p
@jkfiberarts9 ай бұрын
Thank you! I do not have a videos about photographing yarn. That’s a good idea, but I am not a pro photographer. I have an interest in it, and know the lighting basics. I started with a collapsible light box I purchased on Amazon. A photographer friend told me best is outdoor light and best times are an hour before sunset and sunrise. Try to use a background that makes your yarn stand out. I take my pics with my iPhone. It’s all about lighting!

Thank you for your kind words. I have been spinning for nearly 23 years, with short gaps when the kids were little, but have been spinning every day since 2008 ( even when I had my Knee replaced). I am excited to see my website too! I am having a pro shoot my initial inventory and teach me how to do it going forward when I update. A lot of front end work, but it will be worth it!

Question about superwash merino, I have been drop spindling different types of wool. I purchased some superwash, will I be able to spin it or will it slip too much? Your sock yarn is scrumptious!
@jkfiberarts9 ай бұрын
It would not be good for for a drop spindle. It is too slippery, but you could spin it on a supported spindle like a Tahkli. Spin Happy!

Do you always spin long draw? I thought it wasn’t advisable for socks? Any advice for people like me who wear through socks just by looking at them? 😂
@jkfiberarts9 ай бұрын
You are correct. I spin short forward draw for sock spins, but it doesn’t matter when you are spinning superwash. The scales are removed so they won’t pill and felt. I wouldn’t spin carded fiber for socks. SW merino and Shropshire would be the exceptions. Thanks for the excellent question!
