Hey everyone! In this video, I talk about spinning a combed top braid over 10 years after spinning the sister braid. When I first bought my Kromski Minstrel spinning wheel, I also bought some really fancy wool to spin. I liked this braid a lot so I bought 8 ounces initially, but only spun 4 ounces of it in 2012/2013. Earlier this year, I decided to spin the second 4 ounces. Now that I've spun it, what will I do with it?!

Wahooo! A new job? This wool/yarn is beautiful. Reclaim the yarn. It is worth it. I have taken apart sweaters for the yarn.

I'm so excited to work in field archaeology! I might need a second Instagram account for it so I can share the experience (the Cotswolds is full of Areas of Outstanding Beauty so I want to share that). I think I'll weave with the two skeins in a project 🤔

@@ExpertlyDyed Oh a weave. That could turn out really pretty.

If something that I made with a beautiful yarn sat unworn for years, I would absolutely rip it it apart and make something that fit! I'm looking forward to see how you upcycle it.

Silly Kitty will find a way to be noisy during filming. Agree to reclaim the yarn from your shawlette and see what you can do with both yarns. I also like the suggestions of others of weaving might help with the gauge differences of the yarn. I don't think people of the past would waste materials. It was way more common in remaking clothing in the past, so makes sense with knitted projects too. I like the color way of this yard, I am looking forward to seeing the project you decide on eventually.

She's so adorable with her love of me, but it can be really annoying 🤣😅 I think I'll like the yarn more when I see it in a different project 🤔

I enjoyed your video, and the yarn you spun is gorgeous! I don’t believe that is a called fractal spin. A fractal spin is when you divide the top differently in each ply. For example, if the top is divided in half lengthwise, the first half becomes the first bobbin, the second half is divided in two again and spun end to end for the second bobbin, and the two bobbins are plied together. Barber poling is expected with this method. Regarding your too-small-shawl, I’d be tempted not to reclaim it, but to extend it with the new yarn knit in another stitch pattern. You wouldn’t even have to undo your cast off if you picked up stitches from it.

You are correct about the fractal spinning.

I don't tend to do a lot of... fancy (for lack of a better word) projects. Most of my stuff is quite plain and functional, since it's easier and lets me focus on the parts of creating fabric from raw fleece that I actually enjoy. My practical stuff (blankets, towels, socks, bags, etc) are all either good enough or frogged and redone. The few decorative pieces I tend to redo multiple times until it's perfect. I would definitely frog that shawl---a functional version of it would be so cool ! Also--and I'm not a shawl knitter so take this with a grain of salt--perhaps you could reknit it with both skeins, switching off the yarn every other row ? I wonder how the colors would come out that way. But if there are any inconsistencies from one yarn to the other, that's often how I deal with it.

Oh, I hadn't even thought about that! That's the sort of idea I have for a woven project but didn't think about alternating knitted rows. I also reknit when I'm not happy but since getting into weaving, I also like to solve these problems that way instead. If they were the same gauge, it would be very cool to see how the colours looked!

I would reclaim the yarn and knit a new project. Possible another shawl that had the other spun yarn for say the bottom portion that is lace. That way the two ways that the yarn is spun would look deliberate. Good luck!

Ooo, that's another idea. I knitted a shawl back in 2013 with different yarn gauges and finished the bottom with a tailspun lock yarn. It's still my favourite 😍
