Ooo, I do love overdyeing a grey wool, they yield such deep, saturated colours. I'm not sure how well blue texel takes dyes...the white texel surely will.

i really want to get into support spindling but i dont understand how that becomes the yarn- do you ply it? if so, how does that happen? so much to figure out

A yarn is a bundle of individual fibers that have been held together with the tension of twist. The basic definition of yarn makes it really easy to see lots of things as yarn! In this video, I've twisted the fibers and because I wind it onto the spindle shaft, that twist tension holds the fiber in place. Now, it's a yarn! You might also see this referred to as a "single" or "single ply". A yarn single can be used as-is in knitting, crochet, and weaving. Plying is a way of combining two (or more) yarns into a different kind of yarn. Plying yarn can add versatility to making yarn thicker, stronger, and more resistant to abrasion. I have some other videos on my channel that show the plying process 😊 You can ply on a supported spindle but I prefer to use my wheel ( if you don't have a wheel, you can always use the spindle!). Spinning opens up a massive world of yarn design choices. It can be overwhelming for sure! If you ever need help, join one of my livestreams and we can go over everything together, in real time 😁

I know this is an incredibly late comment on this video but I have a couple questions. Do you still use your Babe or have you moved on. If you still use it, can you do a video showing the take down and setup? I am looking for a possible alternative to travel with instead of my Kromski Sonata. I love it but it is heavy and needs some repair so I don’t like taking down and up all the tine. Thanks!

Hiya! I had to leave my Babe wheel behind in Korea, unfortunately. I completely understand about the lack of portability of Kromski wheels 😅 I take my Minstrel to and from the guild meetings, but she doesn’t transport the best either. Babe wheels don't transport easily either. I'd suggest looking at a Hitchhiker wheel? I've seen videos of people spinning with them in mid sized cars 🤣 Otherwise, the Majacraft or Ashford Traveller might work, although they're very expensive. Always keep an eye out on Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace for a second hand option!

Thanks Jennifer ☺️ 🥰 I definitely have my priorities, spend the afternoon weaving instead of packing 🤣 I think the cats will love the place since they'll have stairs again. Our last place did and they loved racing up them. I'm sorry you missed the notification! I was a bit last minute as I expect our new Internet to take a while setting up and decided only yesterday to setup the stream for today. The blue texel is making a pretty nice piece of fabric, but I'll have to wait until it's finished and tested by a cat to decide the verdict 😅 It's actually almost finished now, so I'll get it done with my morning coffee tomorrow!

I started on a drop spindle with which I was getting a lot of twist, and was wondering if I was spinning right on the supported because I was getting much less twist. Your video assured me that it was okay. :) I was wanting to ply this yarn (from the supported) with the yarn from the drop - but it seems that that may not be a good idea because of twist differences...would you agree?
@ExpertlyDyed
@ExpertlyDyed Ай бұрын
That's a good question. Technically, you can ply both of those yarns together and it'd be alright, the drawbacks being it would have extra twist energy that could distort your fabric (could be a fun effect though!) and the supported spun single might abrade a little faster than the suspended spindle spun single. I would advise to ply like yarn with like yarn, to avoid the differences in twist. That said, I would love to hear about an experiment where you plied a single from each type of method and see what the outcome was. Would it make a fun fabric? I dunno, worth spinning 5-10g and seeing what happens. :)

My father, my daughter and I have autism. My daughter’s diagnosis has added ADHD on top of it. Being officially diagnosed is a big plus because then, you can start pinpointing how your autism/ASS/ADHD expresses itself. A lot of pieces fall into place and you can start figuring out more efficiently how to manage the way your brain works and how what drains/triggers you can be handled. How to accept your quirks, limitations and strengths. Because there are a slew of strengths with how a neurodivergent brain works. Your partner too, can find it easier to understand you, be less frustrated about some things, tell when you’re masking and when not. Especially, you can get a better hold on what recharges you and why. It’s funny: I’m starting to see a link between fibre artists and neurodivergence. I think it’s the tactile aspect, combined with the almost meditative activity of spinning, knitting and/or crochet. And yes, there.s the control too. Being able to pick the fibre. Being able to control the grist, twist and weight of the yarn. How it looks, feels and works up. That ‘feeling in control’ is a big thing for most neurodivergent people. Yente from Mijn Wolden revealed she is neurodivergent as well. She calls herself a ‘chaos goblin’, which I absolutely love because there are so many times a neurodivergent person feels as if things are chaotic inside and out. If you can get a formal testing, I’d say go for it. Getting diagnosed still gives you the freedom of sharing your diagnosis or keeping it to yourself. It does, however, give you access to resources that can be extremely helpful. And I’d advise to do a full testing. Ask for both ADHD and ASD. My daughter got her diagnosis for ADS first and when her therapist suspected she had ADHD as well, we had to have her re-tested because no one had thought to look any further. We’d gone private because it was at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic and waiting lists were endless. That meant a lot of extra money. Happy spinning!

That's a good plan, checking for both. I did think initially I had ADHD. After further research, I think I align more with autism though. I have always loved petting soft stuff, but thought that was a "girl" trait. I obsessively touch wool, yarn, and my cats. Vera is silky and Laila is smoth and soft. They satisfy my need for different soft textures. I took up watercolour in 2019 to help me release some control. I'm better for it and I kinda love the chaos it makes. I'm less upset when my paintings go awry because I'm learning when to leave things. That's also difficult, just letting things remain impressionistic. My partner (who did fine art) loves them. I think I'll still always control my yarn. I am better about releasing some control during longdraw and when making weft yarns. But it is interesting that so many fiberarts people are ND! 🥰 Thanks for your support!

@@ExpertlyDyed - “I kinda love it because of the chaos it makes” - EXACTLY! Controlled chaos. Having a controlled, somewhat guided, kinda scheduled and structured way of letting go. Learning when to stop and leave things imperfect. Even in the event tests show you might not be on the spectrum, they might show you are close to the threshold values or that in some areas your score is high and in some, they aren’t. What is very important, is that someone at the testing facility goes over the results with you and does so in detail. In Belgium, some facilities do and others don’t. Best check on that as well before picking one. And never forget: despite the stigma attached to neurodivergence, it can be a superpower just as much as it can be a handicap. The ability to pick up on details no one else perceives. The ability to see patterns others would miss. The knack for tuning into nuances most will blissfully skate over. The talent for ‘thinking out of the box’ through the sheer fact we either live in a different box, or don’t see the box. It can be extremely draining, even paralysing, but it can lead to insights and solutions neurotypical people will have much, much more difficulty figuring out. My yarns will always be controlled. But I’m happy making them. My yarns are therapy. 😊 You made me smile when I read about the fur texture of Vera and Laila. Funny, how little attention some people have for differences in cat fur texture. My Stella’s fur is smooth, very fine, and extremely soft. My SO’s cats have an almost oily and slick feel to theirs. They’re all your basic garden variety moggy. To me, each feels very different. To him and his kids, it’s all just cat fur. LOL

Maybe I missed it, but could you please explain why you need to handcard and rolag an entire sweater worth of fiber? I would like to learn more about longdraw, so please yes I would love for you to do a video long draw. I have been able to longdraw some raw alpaca fiber ran though my drum carder. (Gasp! Yes, I use my drum carder on alpaca since it has no grease and I'm on a septic system = wash finished skeins.) For me anyway, it seems more about selecting the right individual fleece than the preparation. Everything has to be right about the fleece for me to longdraw. Plus, I believe having dusty fleece makes it far less slippery. To get it to work for me I need 3"+ staple, and it's got to be either extra spongy fleece and bouncy, OR 20 microns or less. I am very interested in learning more because right now I can only longdraw if it's just the right fleece in an extra airy preparation.

You could knit a cowl with all that fluff or a really great pair of mittens. There is also cuffs , arm or ankle type cuffs. I would say dye it up because never really know how those crosses dye up till you do it. I am up for a long draw adventure from start to finish. I figured out how to long draw on a drop spindle now I'd like to know how to properly prepare the fiber to be more consistent with it. I know you are having an adventurous time but it is good to see you!

Ooo, a cowl, of course! My brain gives up working when I'm trying to figure out what to do with yarn that isn't my go-to favourite. I should do more videos with longdraw on my supported spindle! I've watched Jacey Boggs do longdraw style with her drop spindle. It would be good to do a side-by-side comparison to see how different they might be. Honestly, I would prefer to not do away work as it takes me away from everything I enjoy and it forces me to do too much in the two days I'm home each week.
