Spinoff Stock Performance | Hunting for Signals in the Noise

Spinoff stock performance // In this video I build on what I started yesterday by compiling a master list of spinoffs from the last two years. I then calculate how an investor would have done putting $100 into each of these 28 spinoff stocks on the listing date. Next I calculate how a Value Investors Club member would have performed with the 14 spinoffs that had VIC writeups. There is still more data to collect such as insider ownership figures, earnings yield, ROIC, etc... but I wanted to share this spreadsheet with you all while it's hot off the press!

3:10 the function XIRR will give you an annualised rate of return - yours worked out at just over 18% when I ran it on your spreadsheet - thanks for the good video

Haha, yes that is an important column. I wonder how many spinoffs over the last 5 years have gone bankrupt!

I think one consideration that's probably impactful/ important May be market cap.. the size might be the primary reason for why some of these larger institutional owners be selling and I expected have to be certain minimum size for people to get interested in it long-term.

Be aware that some of these super investors can't actually invest in the small cap stocks because they are not allowed. Infact because they are forced to sell-off, sometimes it can cause a spin-off to tank the first couple weeks after its released making good buy-in opportunities.

MAXN it spun off @37 and promptly dropped to 19 and as low as 15. I Bought Shares. Year 2 growth should be nice. I though it was a great example of J. Greenblatt's selloff/ unwanted/ Divestment example.

Nice video Brad. Where are you finding the open price for the stock? I checked yahoo finance and I see different numbers. It shows LNSR first trade at $9.00 and MAXN first trade at $37.62.

Yeah I used the listed price prior to trading, and I agree that probably isn't the most accurate price to use.
