I've flown Spirit about a half dozen times and was only delayed one time for about 30 minutes. I will admit, you're not paying for comfort or amenities, with the yellow color, it's basically a school bus with wings. But for the price, newer planes, and great safety record, it meets my expectations.

@@lesliemiller6974 So we just flew JetBlue for the first time in a couple of years and we were really disappointed. Both on the way and returning their TV system was messed up, the sound was horrible and on the way back the earphone jack was intermittent. My seat wouldn't recline, and because the Embraer is a smaller plane, seats were just slightly less cramped than the budget airlines. You're right, the few amenities don't account for so much more in air fares, and poorly maintained equipment makes me nervous.

Main reason for Jet Blue going after Spirit after their failed try to buy Virgin America is they need both routes and planes (neither Jet Blue nor Spirit have any Boeing airplanes, both having Airbus and Jet Blue is replacing their E-190 Embraer planes with more Airbus of the A220 variety). Ultimately Jet Blue's roster will be A220's, A320's and A321's only.

I think it’s all planes and MAYBE FLL/MIA slots but in terms of “routes” I just don’t see that as a factor I am pretty sure jetblue will be exiting many spirit cities where they fly to a smaller cheaper airport in the same region to bring all flights to the bigger more expensive option like buffalo and Niagara Falls. Also they have really only talked about expanding to more European cities so I think most of the felt will be used on existing routes to free up A220s. also remember spirit has 0 ground staff it is all 3rd party contractors so jetblue is probably going to be really eager to have its own ground staff run both airlines to save money and consolidate operations/ gates for the future. I wouldn’t be surprised if jetblue ground staff and counters handled both airlines sooner than later especially since you have to pay to talk to employees at spirit.

@@md3800 - I suspect if the US DoJ allows some sort of merger B6 won't take those NK 319 orders will ask Airbus if they could replace them with additional 220-300 copies, which I suspect are MORE FLEXIBLE for their use. (or the shorter 220-100 if they cant get 300 series copies).

Jetblue/Virgin failed not because of fleet type differences. You have to understand the differences here. Virgin was completely solvent and bankrupt, as the takeover of Virgin America was a bailout of the airline and thus an integration into Alaska. This cost Alaska about $5 billion to accomplish. (Expensive for Jetblue at the time of the deal) Times are changed and pilots are hard to come by, and aircraft orders/deliveries struggle to arrive aa promised. This acquisition allows a faster pace rate of growth than by doing so organically, while every other major hires and brings aircraft on to cover attrition/aging fleets

Yes, duh, that is called unbundling the fare. Your carry on or can of coke is not “free” on other airlines, rather the cost is both included in your ticket price and depending how many services you use, you are paying for the needs of other passengers as well. The difference is with Spirit you can choose what you want to use and pay for.

The biggest issue I see is the ultra low cost carrier market will have a price increase with one of the largest players just leaving the market to allegiant frontier and many MUCH smaller mostly brand new players. I also think this will do virtually nothing to compete with the big guys since you made it clear jetblue is just trying to play catch-up with their already scheduled flights and have no intentions now of entering new US markets or retaining all spirit markets. For all we know this could be an AirTran southwest style merger and it was only for planes and crew instead of only for slots with swa. The other thing is this will be unlike all other modern US airline mergers since they cannot codeshare like say southwest and AirTran or the big 3 when they all merged jetblue and spirit are so incompatible in their current state I would be furious if I booked on JetBlue and got spirit and they would loose tons of money by allowing spirit customers to fly jetblue for ULC prices it is just going to be very messy and all of the spirit ground employee are basically guaranteed to loose their job since they’re all 3rd party employees anyway (which no one is talking about at all!) this merger is a huge mistake in the short term long term we’ll have to see but I think it’s only going to hurt everyone but jetblue

The merger is very simple. Access to cities B6 (jetBlue) does not otherwise have. Thus the NK (Spirit) route structure is the focused objective. Planes are all compatible being the Airbus A320 family, conversion from NK to B6 standards will cost money but is not a complicated process. Pilots are pilots. Other than conversion to the B6 flight operations policies and manuals...they are getting an entire experienced pilot pool with type ratings. Cabin and ground crew from NK can be brought up to the service standards of B6, or terminated for lack of meeting those minimum standards. Or contract services out for ground entirely. Further, there are some synergies from NK that B6 may be able to capitalize on to improve their profit margins and drive costs down even further that haven't otherwise been on the radar in the B6 executive team.

Most likely is not those small airports, like BUF, where Jet Blue will have to sell rights / gates to whomever to gain US Dept. of Justice approval, it's the larger ones, particularly FLL (Fort Lauderdale, FL - where Spirit's main offices are now) where they'd have to sell. And guess who can come and get some / a lot of those gates / rights / rotes? FRONTIER, since they'll get quite a few million$ from Spirit as a break-up fee in their failed merger negotiation. They need to get more routes to keep independent. Oh, and Jet Blue and Spirit (besides FLL), doesn't have as many routes where both fly to as a Frontier / Spirit merger would've had.

I hope JetBlue succeeds, they deserve to do well. I sure hope they retrain the front line Spirit employees to be more service driven than the "hurry up, sit down, shut up, we're off" purely transport mentality of no frills cheap flying bus services of many low cost airlines. When integrating a newly acquired airline they need to really explore the complete training, line checking and recurrent training of both their tech and cabin crew including going through their manuals with a fine tooth comb. The same for the engineering services. It is rapid growth and mergers that can lead to safety failures and incidents. They may even discover a couple of things safety-wise that Spirit does better. If there are deficiencies that require addressing, they could do a conversion course for 10-20 pilots and the same for cabin crew per aircraft they refit and rebrand, so as a newly converted ex-Spirit aircraft is dispatched online, so too are a couple of crew compliments. Therefore operating to the high standards of JetBlue, until converted they former Spirit crew remain operating a yellow bus until the process is complete. I hope it really works in their favour and JetBlue strengthens their position in the industry, low cost and ultra low cost airlines are a cancer on the industry, those super cheap fares are only possible because corners have been cut, including making staff so the job of three people with hideous hours and poor work/life balance rostering. Using casual labour is also a deplorable option. Some might say JetBlue is a low cost airline, I suggest they sit above the low cost model, they are comparably a full service airline compared to AA, DL and UA the difference between the three legacy operators and JetBlue is their more efficient contemporary business model which remains simpler if they do not venture into the long haul market, which is a totally different animal with so many more layers of complexity and expense.

It's JetBlue Airways. It's never been JetBlue Airlines. It's all about the planes, the real estate, and the pilots. All Spirit planes will be converted (if approval is grated by the DOJ). @@nuclearrabbit1 Most airlines were able to grow pre pandemic. Now with supply chain delays and a massive backlog of orders for many airlines there just isn't a way to continue organic growth the same way as before COVID. It will certainly take time for that to be a reality again and by then there's no guarantee that other mergers and acquisitions wouldn't happen further isolating carries like JetBlue, Spirt, Alaska and the other non big four airlines. Additionally, there was already a pilot shortage before the pandemic and now with mandatory retirements combined with early retirements all airlines worldwide are trying different ways to train and hire pilots. The Air Force was always a pipeline to commercial flying but even they are dealing with a shortage. This is now survival of the fittest and I certainly wouldn't be surprised to see further consolidation in the near future.

Airline tickets are heavily taxed, more than cigarettes. A $300 ticket will yield a large percentage for the government and the airline has to work its profitability off of what is left over. For example, if the tax is 40% net to the government, $120 goes in taxes and $180 is left for the airline to pay for fuel, labor, facilities, parts and other costs. With a Ultra-Low Cost Airline (ULCC) the ticket is reduced and more cheap seats are allotted to each aircraft. Spirit puts 228 passengers in their Airbus A-321s. The ticket is reduced, for example, to $180 and the government taxes that at 40%, yielding $72 for the government and leaving $108 for the airline. The ULCC airline then charges for seat upgrades $25, onboard food and drink $15, baggage below below $50 and baggage in the overhead $25. That additional $125 is not federally taxed. That money goes to the airline and is called “ancillary revenue.” Notice the original ticket in the ULCC was $180 and the federal tax was only $72, but the ancillary revenue of $125 means the airline made more money , in this case, then the first comparative example, all things being equal. In this case, the airline is left with $233 ($108+$125) which is $53 more for the airline than the original example of a $300 ticket. Couple this with a fillet of planes that have ten or more seats and the numbers grow exponentially. This is how ULCCs have carved their way into the airline banquet. This is the life-blood of Spirit, Frontier and Allegiant BUT not jetBlue, which has a more traditional model. This may explain the lack-luster financial performance of jetBlue and why it’s stock is under $8 while Spirit stock is above $22. Actually, based on market growth, operating metrics, fleet size plan and new aircraft orders-Spirit should be buying jetBlue at $7. The only ones who will benefit in the jetBlue buyout of Spirit are the short term stock holders that seek a quick fast and easy profit and both management teams. The long term stockholder of Spirit stock will not be happy, the institutional long term stock investors also will not be happy. Finally, the traveling public will not be happy as prices will go up, cheap seat availability in the entire market will decline sharply. JetBlue will get bigger, having spent 2/3s of all its cash reserves to a chute Spirit and then spend millions reconfiguring 200 aircraft. In the end, it will resemble the Titanic, that was too big to be adequately managed by the guy at the helm. JetBlue buyout of Spirit is just another ship sailing in iceberg infested waters with leadership promoting the concept that “bigger is better.” Well, that did not work too good for the Titanic, nor will it bode well for JetBlue. Warning! Financial iceberg dead ahead! Hold on! Get your life preserver! Your gonna get wet! YOU READ IT HERE FIRST!!!

Hub status very important. JFK excellent! Southwest has mastered this with Phoenix, Chicago Midway, Denver, Dallas love field, mainly BWI with new maintenance facility being built along with terrific partnership with the state of Maryland. Largest plus being the total dominant carrier at the busiest airport serving the nations Capitol and a population that makes it number three in Washington and Baltimore together surpassing Chicago and chairing LA. The one major thing Jet Blue has done that Southwest has not is major that being it’s international service to Asia Central and South America and Carribean but even more being Europe and soon Africa. Southwest has dragged its feet buying only the 737 model aircraft and not partnering with another carrier with the larger aircraft serving the ocean to ocean service. BWI has been working hard to get Southwest to go trans Atlantic and offer all international destinations from BWI. Southwest has proven not to be a good partner with the international service. Maryland needs them to buy the aircraft which Het Blue has done at JFK and fly those international routes. Dulles has continued domination of international service in and out of Washington. BWI is the busiest airport in the Capitol region but only ten to fifteen percent of the international flights. Politics play still a major role in awarding Dulles the routes not BWI. The airlines must be willing to see their their promises and fly BWI to the world. Southwest has not been that partner in the international arena. Either Southwest steps up with that service or now Jet Blue and Spirit together can offer that service as the number two airlines at BWI. Their ability to offer that international service out of BWI would prove to Maryland they are the carrier both willing and able to provide the international markets to Washington busiest international airport. Southwest best get it in gear quick or Jet Blue will fill the gap that Southwest has allowed to remain open. Either way BWI should become the winner in this merger and Dulles should finally have a real competitor in international service for Washington and Baltimore alike. Dulles could add Baltimore name to Washington and help dominate that market but at this time it has been reluctant to do so. It best do it before Southwest or a merger of Jet blue and Spirit will really take off and BWI will dominate not just domestic numbers but eat away fast at the international numbers as well.

jetBlue only wants spirit routes. they missed out big time on virgin america routes, alaska got that. so jetBlue had to make the move to buy spirit. if not one of the 3 big airline would of bought jetBlue.

the customer will be the only loser of the story, in Europe the trips of less than 3-4 hours are practically all made by low cost companies like easyjet, wizzair or ryanair. At least in Europe we travel cheaply, which is far from being the case in the USA due to lack of competition.

There is widespread misunderstanding about this acquisition, and unfortunately this video does far more to promote the misunderstanding rather than correct it. Also "Spirit-JetBlue Will KILL other airlines" Classic click bait. JetBlue and Spirit exist in the low cost sector, but the business models are obviously different. JetBlue clearly knows this. They are buying Spirit not to blend the two models. After the deal is done Spirit will not exist. Spirit's fleet and infrastructure and all the employees, including pilots, cabin crew, mechanics, operations, etc. will all be added into and become a part of the new combined company, JetBlue.

JetBlue is overrated based on passenger dissatisfaction with them despite the tv screens and freebies. Spirit is underrated based on the sheer volume of passengers boarding Spirit planes. To the DOJ one has to wonder what is really gained by this expensive merger-JetBlue has overpaid in an act of desperation. Spirit does not need JetBlue-however, JetBlue needs Spirits routes, planes, gates, and pilots. To what end? The traveling public will lose a low cost airline. The industry will gain another United-style type of airline. The number of competing airlines will decrease. Passenger choices for routes and low fares will decrease. This new airline configuration will meld into another Ho-hum airline. Just like cable tv you will get to choose from less services and ultimately pay more - this despite all the corporate suits who say otherwise. Their beds are already fettered with your cash. JetBlue taking over Spirit-great for JetBlue stock holders and executives. Not so good for the average traveling working family. Don’t drink their JetBlue cool aid. Catch the Spirit!

Spirit does charge for everything and their seats aren't the most comfortable. They are the butt of late-night tv jokes....AND....They have grown tremendously from a little-known regional carrier to the biggest ultra low-cost carrier. This proves that a lot of folks don't need snacks or tv screens...If they can get from point A to Point B for a less expensive price they are happy. I for one hope the merger doesn't go through.
