I always get chills at 3:19 when all the horses look upon Spirit, the colonel clearly said any horse can be broken with discipline, time and patience. Well Spirit prove him wrong standing his ground like a badass, he deserve all those horses neighing for him. At that moment Little Creek knew he is a Spirit that can never be broken🌻

In many ways, Spirit used those very same virtues against the Colonel: lulling him into a false sense of victory, only to snatch it away from him to gain his freedom.

@@rafaelantoniobazzanadossan9451 not necessarily he only lost hope for a brief moment when rain got shot but he got it back. The Colonel literally dehydrated him for 3 days watched him so he could counter his moves spirit didn't break. The average horse wouldn't be able to stand let alone fight back. Thats why they cheered him they looked up to him hence his name he couldn't be broken.

@ariadnefrolich7243 Жыл бұрын
He didn't plan to execute Spirit until he saw how the other horses were reacting. Losing control of those horses would severely hurt the outpost' strength. It was a technical move of psychological warfare; show them that rebellion and disobedience will only get you killed. Obviously things didn't go according to his plan, but that's what he was thinking.

Other than the spurs, he actually handled Spirit well. Yes,his treatment was cruel, but it was a different time when a lot of people believed horses couldn’t be broken any other way. Even Monty Roberts said his father broke horses like this for a living the same way, and actually a lot worse than how they did in this scene. This was minor compared to what his father did. After Spirit calmed down, he actually rode well and even rewarded him for accepting the rider. It would be curious to see what would have happen if he stayed, or stayed as a breeding horse.

@@lathafalls7675 it’s not a whip, a riding crop. A short stick wrapped in leather to encourage a horse to get their attention and move. I used to ride all the time, and often used it as a tap on the horse for them to move faster. Honestly, spurs have been used correctly, if not a bit hard, and are still used today. His methods are actually spot on for the time and a lot less harsher than what would be considered normal for a very long time.

@@SaraNightfire1 Precisely. I often don't even have to kick with my spurs when riding my horses, and when I do, it's normally just to get their attention if they're being lazy. This movie has become one of my favorite movies of all time just for how Spirits determination never seems to go away. I’ve always enjoyed characters like that, mainly guys like Spider-Man, Goku, or Batman. Nothing ever seems to break them no matter how hard their enemies try too. Even normal characters like Balto or Spirit have that unbreakable will. I’d also like to say how I hate what Dreamworks has done to Spirit in recent adaptations. You take an inspirational story about a mustang horse who’s taken from his home and time and time again refused to be tamed or broken by man, and then you go and mess it up by turning it into one of the dumbest little girl shows ever made. Not even the latest movie they made could save it. Those movies may exist, but in my eyes the only one of them that is the best will always be Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron.

Man, that's observant. I'd say half of its Riding, and the other half is the conditions he put spirit through, but as some of the people are saying in the comments, the colonel learned and observed spirit in the first rides, and knew how to ride it. The bucking spinning and just running around were all things that spirit did previously. My take is that spirit had his guard down, mostly since he was tired dehydrated and starving, but also since all those tricks worked on the colonels men, usually flying odd in the first millisecond. But when they didn't work on the colonel, he freaks out. Even slamming himself into the fence, flipping over, and rearing high. Which were all things that could hurt himself, but more geared toward his rider. the colonel also spurred hum every rime he did it, ( im aware he used them to walk too, but he dug em into spirirt instead. ) but when spirit finally makes the colonel this nk hes won, he pulls the reins ( basixally the only amount of control the colonel has ) over his head. Another thing I noticed was that look he gave little lake once he had been broken, I saw it less as " I've been defeated " and more " watch this " Sorry about this being the longest comment ever, I just have alot of admiration to the producers and story boarders, and everybody who worked on this. If you looked real life ranchers, the wild horse (being chased) can go for days with occasional break. Those wild horses have huge stamina. But the cowboys/cowgirls' horses are BEAST!!

I loved this movie as a kid so when I saw they made a Netflix show about it I was so happy, until I watched 5 minutes and realized Netflix didn't watch the movie and ruined the entire thing.

This movie has always been a patriotic reminder to me. Spirit represents our country and the kernal is like our challenging rival, (who ever that may be) As the rival is on our back, we thrash and we resist and do everythig in our power to shake them off. But then, they just seem to stay on. The horses, or the other countries, see it too. The challenger sits high atop our country, controlling us. The countries, or horses, loose hope for our fighting spirit. But America won't settle! Like an untamed horse, we will never listen to anyone else! Sometimes an American's gotta do what an American's gotta do. Once we win, the other countries, or the horses in the stables, will cheer for us for our perserverance. I wish everybody could see this movie and understand the bigger picture.

The sad part is people actually “break” horses this way.. they learn no matter what they do they can’t change their situation and it’s pointless to continue fighting. It’s learned helplessness. So many people traumatize horses “breaking” them this way, instead of gaining their trust and taking it a day at a time. It’s traumatizing. This movie got a few things right about horses and this was one of them. There are some parallels between this movie and real life.

@@christoperfleming6832 They were also former mustangs, assumedly. Rather than import all of their horses from the east, it was probably easier to import some at the start, then use those to catch wild horses, which would be hardier and more accustomed to that environment.

Knowing "how to ride" is immensely different than being able to "stay atop." When you REALLLLLLY "know how to ride" you recognize that you are but a passenger. That's perhaps the greatest sin with horses outside of visible abuse is forgetting that component.
