Those vocals can actually be done in such a way that it’s no less healthy to do than any other vocalization. It’s all about practice and mindfulness of one’s own physiology.

It’s not damaging if you’re doing it properly. She’s very well trained in the vocal category. Just look into Melissa Cross’ “The Zen of Screaming.” It’s mostly about learning projection, and vocalizing things from the right part of your body, much like clean vocals.

The songs beginning genuinely feels like being suspended in like a shroud of smoke, not like constricting smoke, just it’s there, you can push it and bring your hands through it weightlessly. And you’re just hanging there.

There are certainly vocalists out there who damage their vocal cords because they just scream with no regard for technique. Like with anything, if you have proper technique and skill, you can do that with no risk of damaging your voice.
